A Staten Island schoolgirl was secretly photographed in the shower by a classmate who shared the snaps with other students, who then viciously bullied her, a lawsuit claims.
Making matters worse, administrators at IS 7 in Huguenot were allegedly more interested in thwarting a probe into the May 2017 incident than getting to the bottom of it and disciplining the mean girls behind it, court papers allege.
The middle-school bosses ordered kids to delete the nude images of the 12-year-old victim from their phones and social media before law enforcement arrived to investigate, according to the allegations.
The alleged victim — identified in court papers as “J.A.” –has since transferred to another school in a different borough, but it has offered no escape. Her IS 7 tormenters continue to haunt her online, “creating false Instagram accounts for the sole purpose of taunting and mocking” her, her family charges.
The girl endured a torrent of abuse throughout her school years, including elementary school at PS 55 in Eltingville, where other kids allegedly pulled her hair, slapped and pinched her, called her a gorilla, and claimed she had AIDS and Downs Syndrome, according to the Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit against the city and the Department of Education.
The same harassers followed J.A. to IS 7, where she was physically threatened, had her book bag thrown in the garbage and called “ugly,” said her parents, whose names are being withheld by The Post to protect their daughter.
Neither school took “meaningful action” against the abuse despite the parents’ repeated complaints, according to court papers.
The cruelty reached its pinnacle when another girl photographed J.A. while she showered at a sleep-over, and then ignored the victim’s pleas to delete the image.
“Don’t worry, no one will see it,” the picture-taker claimed.
Instead, that student shared the photograph with another student who promptly posted the nude image to her 200 Instagram followers — all of whom were IS 7 kids, the parents charge.
The girl notified her mom and dad, who quickly complained, only to have an IS 7 assistant principal tell “all the students with the photographs on their phone to delete said photographs prior to law enforcement’s arrival,” according to the legal filing.
The parents, who are seeking unspecified damages, say their complaints about the ongoing online harassment have also been ignored and that the DOE displayed “deliberate indifference” to their daughter.
“The DOE dropped the ball. The school allowed our client to be subjected to bullying that was taken to the extreme,” family lawyer Imran Ansari said.
A DOE spokesman said the department takes bullying “seriously,” and that DOE would review the lawsuit.
