A nine-year-old girl was left 'in shock' after receiving a note of 'grateful thanks' from the Queen the day after she died.
Primary school pupil Lois Hanson, from West End, Hampshire, had sent Queen Elizabeth II a poem in the summer to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee - and forgotten all about it.
But after receiving a response from the late monarch on Friday, Lois and her family realised it was perhaps one of the Queen's final pieces of correspondence.
Primary school pupil Lois Hanson, from West End, Hampshire, was left 'in shock' after receiving a note of 'grateful thanks' from The Queen the day after she died
The response from Britain's longest reigning monarch is thought to be one of her final pieces of correspondence
The cream coloured envelope dropped through Lois's letterbox, from Her Majesty, the day after she had passed away peacefully aged 96 - thanking Lois for her kind words.
The letter was signed 'Elizabeth R' and included two photographs of the Queen alongside a Royal coat of arms.
The monarch's message gave 'grateful thanks for your kind message on the occasion of the Seventieth Anniversary of my Accession to the Throne'.
Lois said: 'She was a wonderful Queen and her Jubilee showed us all the wonderful things she has done for us and I wanted to do something for her.
Lois said the monarch was a wonderful Queen and her Jubilee showed us all 'the wonderful things she has done for us'
'I was in shock. I felt happy that I had a card from her, but sad because she had died the day before.'
Lois' mum, Zoe Hanson, checked the postmark of the reply - which was 7 September 2022 - the day before The Queen had died.
She said: 'Lois wanted to send [the poem] to The Queen and so we put it in an envelope to Buckingham Palace, never ever expecting a reply.
'It had completely disappeared from our minds over the last four months, until the postman came on Friday, the day after the Queen had died.
'The only letter through the door that day, it was a posh envelope, so I checked the postmark, which was Buckingham Palace, 07.09.22.
'It must be one of the last things to come from [the Queen].
'When it came through the post I was very excited about it - because I had completely forgotten that she'd written to the Queen, as [her Jubilee] was four months ago now.'
The letter was signed 'Elizabeth R' and included two photographs of the Queen alongside a Royal coat of arms and arrived in a posh cream envelope
Ms Hanson, 47, then had to wait for Lois, who has just gone into Year 5, to return home from school.
The mother added: 'I said to her 'there's something really, really important for you to open'. And she got very excited to see her name on there and that it had come from Buckingham Palace.
'It's just a lovely, lovely piece of history.'
Lois' poem that prompted such a thankful reply from Her Majesty read:
'You shine oh so bright, like stars in the night. Happy Jubilee, I know you'll have a cup of tea. The Jubilee will be history and it's you they will see. Happy Jubilee.'
Ms Hanson revealed that she has had to stop Lois taking the original letter into school and has instead given her a photocopy to show her school friends.
She said: 'Lois wanted to take it to school, and I said "no, no - you're not putting that in a school bag" because then it gets yoghurt on it.
'I know what goes on in a school bag - well, no, who knows what goes on in a school bag?'
Lois and her mother now have the tricky task of finding a frame for the response from the late monarch.
Ms Hanson added: 'We're trying to decide what happens to it. We think we're going to get it framed. I think probably in the living room somewhere - pride of place.'

Roni Littman appears in Burberry's spring/summer 2022 collection after landing a modelling job with the luxury fashion brand - as her parents say they're 'so proud'
A nine-year-old schoolgirl with Down's Syndrome has become the latest face of luxury fashion brand Burberry after landing a dream modelling job that sees her appear in the company's spring/summer 2022 collection.
Roni Littman, 9, is far from camera shy and has already modelled for the likes of River Island, Asda George, and TK Maxx - but her latest career move marks the first time she has appeared in a collection for a high-end designer.
And Roni's mum Shelley, 46, couldn't be more proud of her daughter, whom she says has "blown all expectations out of the water" after doctors told her parents she would "never be able to do certain things" because of her diagnosis.
Shelley, from Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, said: "We were absolutely elated when Roni got the Burberry modelling job.

"I am so proud of her - she has blown all expectations out of the water.
"When she was born, we were told she may not be able to walk or talk. But she has defied the odds and continues to break boundaries.
"She has achieved so much in such a short period of time.
"We didn't know Roni had Down's Syndrome until she was born.
"We were told she may never be able to do certain things and the doctors filled us with negativity. But she has proved everyone wrong."
Roni's mum also heaped praise on brands like Burberry who have chosen to encourage diversity and have become more inclusive with their advertisements.
"I am very impressed that high-end brands like Burberry are being inclusive as it is encouraging for other people with disabilities," she added, "there's no reason why children with disabilities shouldn't have these things too."
And while Roni - who has been signed with Zebedee Inclusive Talent Agency since 2017 - is a natural in front of the camera, she's also managed to pick up some other skills too - including skiing, which she has been doing since the age of five.
Shelley explained: "Roni did take a while to communicate clearly but she makes herself very much understood.
"She is a very cheeky, determined and feisty young lady. She has always loved the camera and entertaining people.
"She started walking at 17 months old and has become a very determined individual so I'm not surprised that she is excelling.
"Sometimes, it can be difficult for her as she takes longer to learn things but she never gives up.
"It is an honour and a privilege to have her in our lives.
"She learnt how to ski aged five and put her all into it."

And now that she's taking the fashion world by storm, Shelley hopes her daughter can help "inspire other disabled children" to follow their dreams no matter what.
She added: "My husband Jon and I are beyond excited to see what the future holds for Roni. We will do our best to help her achieve whatever path she wants to take in the future.
"We hope Roni can inspire other disabled children and adults to follow their dreams. Roni proves everything is achievable and don't let things get in your way."

The girl was in her home in the Dovecot area of Liverpool when the attack took place
A young girl was shot dead in her home in Liverpool and an unknown gunman is on the run after the violent attack.
The nine-year-old child was inside a house on Kingsheath Avenue, in Dovecot, when a man burst into the property and fired a number of shots. The girl suffered a gunshot wound to the chest before being rushed to hospital where she died a short time later.
A man inside the home also suffered a number of gunshots to his body while a woman was shot in the hand before the gunman fled the scene, reports the Echo.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed the news in a statement this morning and said: "We have launched an investigation following the tragic fatal shooting of a child in Huyton last night, Monday, August 22. Officers attended at a house on Kingsheath Avenue at 10pm after reports that an unknown male had fired a gun inside the property.
"A nine-year-old girl suffered a gunshot injury to the chest and was taken to hospital in a critical condition. She has since sadly died. Next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers. A man also suffered gunshot wounds to his body and a woman suffered a gunshot injury to her hand during the incident inside the house.
"They have both been taken to hospital for treatment for their injuries. An investigation is underway and house-to-house, CCTV and forensic enquiries are in the process of being carried out. A cordon is also in place.
Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said: “This is a truly shocking incident in which tragically a young and innocent girl has been shot and sadly died. Our thoughts and condolences go to her family and friends at this very difficult time. No parent should ever have to suffer the loss of a child in these dreadful circumstances.
“This crime is abhorrent and our communities must come forward and tell us who is responsible. This cowardly individual does not deserve to be walking the streets and I would urge those who know anything to speak to us and tell us what they know so that we can put the person responsible behind bars where they belong.
“We are carrying out a number of lines of enquiry as a matter of urgency and would ask for dashcam, CCTV or mobile phone footage from anyone who lives, works or was visiting the area of Kingsheath Avenue last night.”
Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC or call @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 quoting log 1083 of August 22.
