The School-to-Prison Pipeline: From Education to Incarceration The school-to-prison pipeline is a common metaphor used to describe the ways in which students are pushed out of the education system and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems through policies and practices within schools that involve law enforcement.

School-to-Prison Pipeline School: The "Zero Tolerance" Policy Students are arrested and suspended for minor offenses, such as having cell phones, drawing on desks, and referencing to guns. Previously suspended or arrested students can be sent to a Juvenile Detention by violating probation, such as missing school or disobeying school staff.

In the United States, the school-to-prison pipeline (SPP), also known as the school-to-prison link, school-prison nexus, or schoolhouse-to-jailhouse track, is the disproportionate tendency of minors and young adults from disadvantaged backgrounds to become incarcerated because of increasingly harsh school and municipal policies.
Take a stand! The school-to-prison pipeline describes the process in which children, and especially children of color, are systematically pressured out of productive society and into the prison system. There is significant evidence that these children are not given the same opportunities as their peers1.
The alarming disparities are the result of the school-to-prison pipeline, where strict discipline measures such as suspensions, expulsions, and classroom arrests from law enforcement presence in the schools feeds students directly into the criminal justice system.

In this module we are primarily focusing on two aspects of the school-to-prison pipeline: school discipline (such as suspensions) and the presence of police in schools. If you have personal experiences with school discipline and police in schools, please engage with this module at your own pace and comfort level.
Immigrant teens have been suspended from school based on flimsy allegations of gang involvement, and later picked up by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials and sent to restrictive detention facilities out of state.
Developed in partnership with Georgetown Law's Juvenile Justice Clinic & Initiative, the Racial Justice Toolkit provides resources for youth defenders and advocates who are committed to advancing racial justice in court, in policy advocacy, and in their communities.
