FOR MOST YOUNG ACTORS, A major role in a movie that deals with incest, date rape and assorted other violations of the psychosocial contract -- even an ultra-low-budget film -- would come under the heading of "very bad career move." But for Jeremy Davies, the 24-year-old star of "Spanking the Monkey," which cost $80,000 to make and opened to glowing reviews two weeks ago, the chance to play the sexually frustrated Ray Aibelli was irresistible. He may sleep with his mother and try to kill her, and be accused of rape after a fumbling attempt at sex with a neighborhood girl, but throughout "Spanking the Monkey" Ray maintains the comic likability of classic coming-of-age heroes.
"The character fell somewhere between the stereotypical roles that are offered to actors my age, where you're either a nerd or a jock," said Mr. Davies during a recent visit to New York. Sipping orange juice at the Mayflower Hotel, the wiry, soft-spoken actor acknowledged that it was Ray's ambiguity that attracted him to the part. The character combines the sweetness of waning youth with the menace of a nascent sexuality. "I'm far more attracted to the antihero," he said.
Mr. Davies was sent the script after the film's writer and director, David O. Russell, saw a Subaru commercial in which the actor manically compared a car to punk rock. "He looked young and intense and kinetic," Mr. Russell recalled. But the director admits that he had reservations about casting Mr. Davies after seeing his audition on videotape. "He was very brooding and intense, and I wanted a more voluble, slightly ethnic type," Mr. Russell explains. "My ideal was the young Dustin Hoffman."
Mr. Davies was so eager to win the role, however, that he cut a European vacation short, flew from London to New York and stayed for a week at his own expense just for the chance to read for the part again, this time in person.
Mr. Russell said his producers and other advisers "had to disabuse me of that over-attachment to the young Dustin Hoffman picture, and I'm glad they did." Not only did Mr. Davies sustain the understated humor that runs through the film, the director said, but "he was obsessively meticulous." When filming the sensitive mother-son scenes, Mr. Russell said, "Jeremy was constantly double-checking and asking, 'Is this real?' "
In the end, the director decided that he didn't want a young Dustin Hoffman after all. "What I really wanted was somebody who could do the role as great as he does," he said. "And I wanted to discover a new talent."
Many critics have singled out Mr. Davies for special praise, with Caryn James of The New York Times describing his portrayal as "especially deft."
The praise has led to another project for Mr. Davies. After the director Michael Apted heard good things about Mr. Davies's performance in "Spanking the Monkey," he met him and cast him in his new movie, "Nell," which stars Jodie Foster, Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson. In "Nell," which has just finished filming in North Carolina, where the movie is set, Mr. Davies plays a town slacker, the nemesis of a local wild woman (Ms. Foster). "Originally he was more of a stereotypical kind of antagonist, this big, muscular guy, which wouldn't have worked anyway, because I'm pretty waiflike," Mr. Davies said.
Mr. Apted said of the performance: "Not only could Jeremy do the accent and seem authentic, but he put his own spin on the character and made it his own. It can't have been easy for an actor making his major film debut with Jodie, but he did very well. He will go far."
Mr. Davies's flexibility may be attributable to a peripatetic youth: as a child he lived in Kansas, Vermont, California and, finally, Rockford, Iowa, where his family still lives. His father, Mel Boring, writes children's books, and his stepmother is a nurse. (His mother died of lupus when he was 8.) He was introduced to theater in California, but when he moved to Iowa at the age of 15, he discovered that sports, not the dramatic arts, were the important local activity.
"It was pretty frustrating," Mr. Davies said, "but it made me want to act even more because I couldn't have it. It fueled my desire to leave." When his classmates headed for state universities, he said, "I shoved off for Hollyweird." After earning an associate's degree from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts/West, Mr. Davies got roles in such television series as "The Wonder Years" and "Melrose Place." In 1993 he had a small role in "Guncrazy," a well-received low-budget movie that starred Drew Barrymore.
"There was a point when I was considering going to the university because of that old cliche that you need something to fall back on," Mr. Davies said. "That makes sense, but I also think it's a cop-out. If what you're really going to be happy doing is acting, why would you pursue something else?"
