Hi!

Is “save your ass” an idiom in English?

I could not find it in the dictionary and the Internet, but I figured, is it just used as a rude way to tell someone that I can save you / I will do everything I can to prevent the punishment from getting to you ? Am I getting this one correctly?

(Prison Break)

Mr. Quinn: ... Same thing goes with the kid, you know, who you were silly enough to tell the old lady that you were actually in possession of. Everything that I'm saying is boiling down to this, you gotta hand the reins over to me now, so that I can save your ass. ("old lady" refers to "Vice President".)

Paul: First of all... No! No! (Then Mr. Quinn fractured Paul’s proximal and middle phalanx.)

Mr. Quinn: See, now you made me make a wave. ...
This is a slang term and fairly crude. You are right. Mr. Quinn is saying that Paul is in a bad situation and needs Mr. Quinn's help to get out of that situation. He is offering his help.
Hey presl,

You watch an awful lot of Prison Break!

But yes, you are right!
It's more than just an idiom for saving people: 'your/his/my ass' is a standard colloquial way to refer to people. ("Get your ass in here!" = "Come in here!")

I wouldn't use this expression in a formal context, but I don't think it's especially insulting to the person you're referring to. You're not actually calling them names. I consider it extremely mild and not that crude.

This pattern occurs in lots of dialects of AE, but it takes particularly diverse and interesting forms in African American dialects. An AAE Camouflage Construction is a linguistics article on this topic. The abstract is here: http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/language/toc/lan84.1.html
It's crude, but in some circles it has lost its "shock value".
