Well, some people will simply believe anything that someone tells them, even when they have or should have to hand a document that would show them that it's a lie - in this case, Celebrity's own list of shops which were actually their partners. I would certainly use a local jeweler I trusted. It was not Celebrity's fault she did not take her map with her to see if it was on the approved list. Let the buyer beware. I do so agree with the above being crazy to spend 24K in a foreign country let alone in a store they knew nothing about!!!!! When I see or hear of people being ripped off overseas it usually comes back to the people buying thinking they are saving a fortune,getting a fab deal,and end up with squat. I don't mean to sound harsh,but as it was also noted above in the post Buyer Beware!!! There is no vaccine for stupidity. I hope all who read this shop with caution,know what they are looking at,and have some idea what they would pay in the US or Canada or anywhere else for that matter. Too bad the couple ran into the cruise ship's shopping director, who made a big fuss. And too bad they subsequently had the jewelery appraised. They would probably be very happy right now with their purchases thinking they made a good deal. They still have the jewelery to wear. It was not stolen. Unless they were going to try and sell it at home for a profit, they can still enjoy it. If the store owner deliberately misled them and gave them fraudulent papers, then they should get the Greek authorities to look into it, not the cruise line. Especially on jewellry where you have no recourse! I know I'kk get flamed for this, but they deserved what they got. No,you won't get flamed for what your wrote I think we all think the same thing!!! Perhaps she was annoyed because she lost out on commission. It was not clear from the article, but perhaps the couple ran to her to show her their purchases? Btw, the retail store can charge whatever they want, a 3x mark-up is not unusual for jewelry at retail. The scam is that they misrepresented the carat weight etc. I know from jewlery studies long ago, that clarity is not an exact science. My custom made ring was supposed to be a D1 diamond. I think the gem institute had it at a D2 it couldn't be evaluated until after it was cut. The jeweler didn't agree and he is well known. My point is that it is considered acceptable legal wise to be off my 2 shades as far as clarity, because different gemologists see different things when looking through those loops. Also, I wonder if someone has contacted the Santorini police to investigate? This is afterall their Island reputation. I don't see how the cruiseine,no matter which one,can be help responsible for all or any of the stores they endorse and that endorsement is not always because they are good either.. With all the ports and all the stores it really has to be up to the person buying whatever to take charge of what they buy,and if and when they get taken it is up to them to resolve the problem. Some place along the way the buyer must beware. Merchants in other countries are not held to the same standards as we would like to think merchants here are,and since many people are in port for just one day why worry about it. The burden of proof is on the buyer and it would probably cost about 24k to go after the merchant anyway. Again,it all boils down to knowing what you are buying,and if it seems to good a deal you are probably going to get taken. It happens her in the US just the same as it happnes elsewhere. Trust me.. I can almost assure you woman gets whatever they bough appraised.. Men too I think. I just hope, as another poster said ,she still likes her jewelry and will wear it,enjoy it and never shop abroad again unless it's Cartier in Paris:. If the shop was previously on the ship's program but was taken off the list by the cruiseline because of past passenger complaints, do you not think that this is something the the shopping director should have addressed in his talk? They called the store and demanded our money returned to our credit card and told them we would be sending the ring back ASAP. The store owner called us directly and told us to sit tight, that a courier would come for the ring we live in Los Angeles. He explained if we shipped the ring back, it might be confiscated at the border. So we sat. And we continued to sit and we called the owner several times collect and wanted to know when the courier would be picking up the ring. The owner told us just a little while longer We went back and forth with the owner for almost a year. Well, it's been 20 years and I still have the ring! I kinda wish my DH had bought me the matching earrings, too. Great story and lucky you. Ok, so how long was it until you realized they were not coming and put the ring back on your finger? So it was okay to say something after the passengers got back and made their purchase, but not before? I would think that a mention that a shop was removed from the list , because of complaints, which is what the shopping director seemed to tell the passenger , is merely stating the facts. Not sure how they could be exposed to liability to the shop. I would think that if they do not caution passengers now, after they KNOW that the shop is still holding itself out as an approved shop ,the cruiseline could just as likely be exposed to liability from an unhappy passenger, and if not liability, then a ton of bad pr. I'd just like to know how, if they made such a purchase, that they can blow 24K on worthless crap and what they do for a living that htey don't know the difference between the good stuff and the poorer quality stuff. Maybe they should be watching QVC. If they don't know 24K jewellry and brother, I DO --they got what they deserved. Because, what was being evaluated was the gemstones. There is also another value if it was an antique from a famous jewerly house. Most people, unless they are trained gemologists with a loop, don't know what they are looking at Plus, these days some gemstones are man-made. The fraud I believe was in the carat weight and clarity of the stones that were off. Btw, 24K is usually used to plate nickel or another metal. I know it is used in some countries, but these days most 'good gold jewelry' is 18K. They were plated 24K. White gold is mixed with another metal and that is how it gets it's color. I lived in Saudi Arabia for 3 years and bought a fair bit gold jewelry there as well as in Dubai at the famed gold 'souks', where gold is sold by weight and purity. Although my preference is 18K for the color, many items were sold at 22K and 24k. The color is far too yellow for my taste, as well as very dent-prone because of the softness. The designs usually were more fussy than I'd wear on a daily basis. I also lived in Indonesia for 2 years, where many diamonds are for sale. These are not always gem quality IMHO, and the rage at the time was for yellow diamonds which I found downright ugly! Short take is that I never purchased diamonds there! DH travels to Columbia often, and I'm the proud owner of a beautiful set of emeralds The best story is of the machine gun armed guard at the hotel room door as he perused the seller's wares and made his deal! The moral is, buyer beware! Only buy from recommended or reputable stores and dealers. Otherwise, why should the cruise line stop at ex-partners? If they have to warn about ex-partners, shouldn't they also warn about all the other dodgy shops they know about? Where would it end, especially when they have already taken reasonable steps? It is very soft, so at least in the US it would not be used to mount a diamond ring. The emeralds sound great by the way! I started wearing the ring right around a year after we purchased it. The cruise line probably doesn't know whether, or how many of, the passenger complaints were in fact true. If there were enough of them to cause the cruise line to remove the shop from its approved list, then providing the current approved list is enough. Going further than that would be legally dangerous - it would expose the cruise line to the possibility of legal action by the shop, against which the cruise line might not be able to defend itself. Is Santorini worth visiting? – A travel lover’s honest opinion

Cute villages. Blue seas for days. Endless fresh seafood. Holiday vibes you can literally smell. We holidayed there recently and totally loved it… but the rest of the world loves it too and I have thoughts about how to make this chic bucket list destination a bit more affordable. My main takeaway around making Santorini less of a blow out is to avoid eating anywhere with a view. But by doing something as simple as getting off main streets and opting for a cute courtyard instead of a sea-fronting terrace, you can save so much. I also suggest looking for local tavernas and cafes away from main tourist areas if you have time to venture further than Oia and Fira as gorgeous as those villages are , and taking advantage of daily set menus and specials which offer cheaper meals.
