A Canadian woman told me that her husband was addicted to cocain and that 'half the males in the Dr were regular cocain users'. I didn't really believe her , but Is there any truth in that. Is drug use quite common there? If so what? Mar 5, 0 0. I wouldnt call it rampant! Cocaine is a very popular drug among users here. AZB Platinum. Jan 2, 12, I have been living in DR for 6 years and have been traveling here since I can tell you from my point of view that I have never seen any drugs anywhere in DR. Now I am not saying that drugs are not sold in DR, its just not that visible if you are not looking for them as opposed to major american cities where drugs are sold almost everywhere. DR is like any other country in the world, if you want drugs, you will find them but you will not see them in the streets being sold by drug dealers. No, dominicans are not into abusing illegal drugs. Not a single friend of mine has even tried Marijuana in their entire life, let alone cocaine. Pib Goddess. Jan 1, 3, 20 38 www. Click to expand Dec 5, 92 0 0. Perico Actually I have heard that Perico mixture of cheap cocaine and other unknow crap is a popular drug among young dominicans. As already mentioned by another poster, very popular in bars and discos because there is not smoking involved. What I personally would suggest to Norman's friend husband is to stay in Canada with his addiction. There he can find more help and be rehab. In the DR, addicts get rehab in prision there is more drugs inside the jails than outside. In the DR one can be jailed from years just because of a joint, and God forbid a gringo being cut with drugs in that country. They will milk anyone out, throw them in prision, etc. There is a lot cheap beers and rum, plus or the fun we have day to day with the news and lol. Cheers Aj. Jon S. Jan 25, 1, 6 0. What a bunch of crap!!! When I used to go to Schizo and other clubs in Santo Domingo, you could see people going into corners and bringing out a little bag, then putting some of that 'refined sugar' on a credit card and sniffing away I remember one time I went to some club on Winston Churchill Ave and there had to be at least 5 people getting coked up outta their minds right outside the club, then two of them had the nerve to start a fight, then the freaking cops from Destacamento de Naco showed up and took them away. I will agree with the fact that people over there don't sell or buy drugs out in the open, unlike in the US. It's a recreational drug down there, more for just the party scene, it's not something they would dabble in every day. For a joint it's 6 months automatically, as a person I used to go to school with found out the hard way, right to el Palacio de la Policia, in the Alaska section, it's probably the worst section in there May 29, 3, Pib said:. Presidente is the preferred poison here. I'd rather get caught stealing a car than with a joint in my pocket! Here drug use highly frowned upon by the local pigs, err cops. Some of kids in the high school I went here specially the so called embassy kids used to smoke pot in the field. But it was just the same as in any american high school as I found out when I moved to the states. I think its pretty normal to expect that now a days. My advice to you is not to risk it here since its not worth the trouble you'll get into with the authorities. Stick to rum if you are visiting the DR. I was thinking the same thing lol If they were to ban Presidente Feb 3, 5, 0 He was caught with marijuana and was kicked out of school. I must say that the prevalence of drugs has increased tremendously in the DR over the last 10 years or so. Still, it is not very visible except for maybe some neighborhoods such as Capotillo, Los Guandules, etc. As such there's bound to be some residual drugs left in the DR for consumption. Considering the number of dominicans involved in the drug trade, it is a miracle that drug usage is still relatively low. In other words, even though people do it, it is not looked upon as cool as in the US. Presidente, rum and sex still rule as vices in the DR. My two cents Yan-Yan New member. Sep 22, 96 0 0. Oh Pleeease! Norman, that is a ridiculous exaggeration. I was born and raised in Santo Domingo and I was offered drugs for the first time about two months ago in my last visit And I was shocked! The truth is that the use of drugs has indeed increased dramatically in the last couple of years But if you are talking about 'rampant' drug use, that would be Madrid, not Santo Domingo. As some people have said here, nobody would want to be caught with drugs in the DR, it's a sure trip to jail And believe me, nobody's looking forward to that. Forget that nonsense, that person had no clue what she was talking about! I was very surprised when i heard it because I've never seen it or heard about it. Jan 9, 4, 0 0. Observation There is some crack and powder cocaine use among some of the street girls in Boca Chica, not done in the open but I kow one girl personally that has wasted down to a mere shadow and was put into rehab by her American boyfriend in a la Romana clinic so it is there. Mar 25, 5 0. Living among the poor I never saw drug abuse nor use. I do however know of people dying from psorios of the liver due to acholoism. I have seen kids especially addicted to glues cement glue to get their highs. It's all to sad really they beg and steal just to buy glue to sniff. Jan 1, 2, I hate to be negative because after spending much time in the RD I always told people that drugs were not a problem there. I am sure it may have been there in the past but I never heard it talked about. I can not say that anymore. What I observed this winter was small sales by the local concho drivers and the major dealers were Italian and Belgian. Jaun Dolio has become a town pretty much owned by Italian small businesses and the younger generation has gotten in on the money to be made from drugs. The majority of customers, I am happy to report, were rich expats living there and tourists. I am not saying that no Dominicans were using because I knew some ladies of the night and some sankies who did drugs with thier customers. Unfortunately some of them are obviously addicted now. For the most part the Dominicans in the area are lucky if they have enough money to buy a pack of cigarettes that they are addicted to never mind cocaine. God Bless any of them who become addicted to drugs. I attribute the rise in drug sales and use to the bad economy. Another side effect that is already being noticed in an increase in crime activity. We all know that use begets more use hence the desperate acts for the needed next high. Larry Gold. Mar 22, 3, 2 0. Cocaine Go into the flamingo bar in sosua and see everyone coked out of their minds. You dont see the actual coke but you can tell everyone is coked up. Like AZB said, if you go looking for drugs you will find them. However, if you avoided the touristy places and the clubs in the major cities, I'll bet that you could spend 20 years in the DR and never see a hint of illegal drugs. Probably more drugs on 1 block in Washington Heights than there is in that whole country. CaribbeanGeorge 'Creature of Leisure'. Jan 3, 0 0 www. Open your eyes, please It's not a matter of getting drugs, it'a a matter of corruption, I have lived here for 8 yrs from Punta Cana to Cabarete, all around and I have seen drugs beingn offered even by officers. In Santo Domingo the barrios are bad I once knew a guy selling used cell phones and he was a dealer too, he kept all his stuff in his mom house, without her even knowing. Here is worst than other countries, because the police knows and let all this mules sell, as long as they share their part. So open your eyes, just drop to Sosua or Boca chica, just to mention. Some persons from the inteligence sector are just informers, but they keep their bussiness under their own protection. Jan Bronze. Jan 3, 1, 65 Santo Domingo Este www. I didn't even realize that this drug was here! Once I went to a little popular bar here in Zona Colonial and as soon as I went in and got my beer Two trucks pulled up with about 20 uniformed men jumping out with guns. They told everyone in the place to put they'er hands on the walls. I started but I guess they thought I was a tourist and they told me that I didn't have to. But, not wanting to stand out and look like I was a stuck up tourist I did what the others were doing. I didn't understand what was happening but luckly a guy next to me spoke english and he was translating for me. They had peoples shoes off. Dumping purses. One guy they had take his pants down! I saw 2 guns, and a few knives but the police gave these back to the people. I was shocked! There was a TV camera there too. I can't remember the ladys name but she is the controversal reporter on TV. Anyhow, there were no drugs found, which was amazing to me, there was at least people there. All hippy looking younger people. Unless the people had drugs and paid someone off. After about 20 minutes they all left and the party was back to normal. The crowd did thin out a bit tho. And I was outta there as soon as my beer was gone! Lawyer friends told me that if you see anything that looks like drugs anywhere, in a colmado, in a park, anywhere, get out! Because if the police come they can arrest everyone. Even if your an innocent bystander. So my advice is, if you know anyone anywhere that is using or holding don't hang around. Don't want to spend time in a Dominican prision. Even if its only for 1 night! Last edited: Sep 27, Apr 26, 1, 10 0. Re: Drug bust Jan said:. Follow Jan's advice. These unpleasant surprises are called redadas. I've seen it here in Santo Domingo colonial zone. I dunno about the north coast but most likely cabarete, sosua and POP are not excempt. Top Bottom.

Last activity 19 August by Swisskid. Good morning everyone, Whether it's a simple cold or a chronic illness, medication and medicine use vary from country to country and culture to culture. When you are used to certain brands or types of drugs, being in a country like the Dominican Republic with different rules can affect your daily well-being. Some drugs also differ in name, price, dosage, active molecule, so we would like to hear your opinion on these issues: Have you ever had difficulties finding familiar or useful medicines for your health in your host country? Have you ever been faced with a shortage of medicines in Dominican Republic? Would you have said that in Dominican Republic drugs are more or less expensive than in your home country? Do you find them more or less effective or of similar quality? What is the place of alternative medicines in your host country? Have you ever used them? Medicines are readily available here. In contrast to many countries, most are available without doctor prescription. Of note - strong painkillers are difficult to get and require specific prescription that not all doctors have access to. Meds are in many cases much less expensive than they are in USA and Canada. I don't know about comparison to other countries. It's best to stay away from small local pharmacies due to counterfeit drugs. And always check expiry dates. Alternative medicine is not readily accepted here. Those practitioners are not easy to find. Culturally here Doctors are still on pedestals and everything else is not. Medication can be brought with you so long as it is not a controlled substance in the D. If a medicine or an analog is unavailable in the D. Once coming in and i found all but one of my heart meds in SD. I take 4 different ones. I checked at least in SD and others in Santiago and La Romana for the one that wasnt available and even looked under other names for it. I had a few extra left over on my return to the states in one of my three 7 day pill boxes. I was told or read somewhere that they limit the amount you can bring into DR. I needed them and it didnt matter the last time one of my bags arrived without my lock and another arrived in the clear wrap and I didnt recognize it as mine. No Zipper.. And you can unlock it with your phone app. Well I took 3 months supply with me and I will run out in a month. Tried pharmacies in DR most are a waste of space, can't get anything. Why do you put your meds in check baggage? I always travel with a big bottle of Ibuprofen, count, as well as other meds in my carry on. I have traveled all over Europe, South America and the Caribbean and never have been questioned about them. They claim it could not be transported. Not judging, just wondering. Meds should always go in carry on, in original containers AND if you can bring a copy of the doctors prescriptions. Hi there I'm struggling to get my medication in DR. I live in France where all my medications are free. I don't expect this but it would be good if I could find them here in Sosua. Thanks Ducketts. There are still ferry flights leaving the DR. We just had friends leave for Canada and France. Have you contacted your embassy for very flights? Most seem to leave from punta Cana and Santo Domingo. Call all the French airlines! Scour the internet! There is one coming in today at Punta cana Air France I think. They are coming in empty. Definitely check with your embassy. I didnt mention 'everything' that has been stolen. It was before Christmas and told him gifts for my lady and her mother and sister and two kids. He asked how much I paid for them and I said maybe or He then asked how much money I had on me. Then asked for me to put it in the suitcase. I said he must be crazy. The receipts are in one of my bags and I will open them up and show him. I was hot.. I wondered if I was going to be flagged because of it but have been back 4 times since then and no problems. However I went though the Consulates office to do it. Always always put meds in carry on! That's a big deal if they go missing. Most things can be replaced. AS this thread began speaking about meds here, I found the meds to be very inexpensive. When immobilized for a while due to an issue with the thyroid, once I was able to move a little I got taken to a Dr in a local hospital. Luckily he spoke a little English He prescribed a couple meds plus gave me several free samples. Two visits and free meds each time. What was strange was that a Pharmaceutical sales guy came into the office each time I was there different people, different meds and left freebies for the Dr - I got a couple. I did google each med to verify what it was and what it was to do and the strength. THey were mid strength pain and muscle relaxants and the prescriptions were very little. They were also made by well known companies and they did the job Luckily I have no need for on-going meds as some have indicated. Does anyone know if Arthritis medicine such as Methotrexate or Xiljanz are sold in DR and how they charge for them?? Most drugs are available here without prescriptions at any good pharmacy. Some are generic and type will be. I typed in the drug name you gave on google as 'metotrexato en republica dominicana' And got this I don't have the need for much medication, but I did once purchase a skin cream that was prescribed to me here in the use. I was able to purchase the same cream in the DR for 1,dop. Several times I have purchased meds for friends back here in the states. The hospital pharmacy seems to be well supplied. The regular pharmacy is very accommodating. If they don't have it, they find who does and go pick it up for you. I usually bring all of my medication In my hand luggage that is carried on the plane and put overhead! La Serena Super markets all have Pharmaceuticals. Also in the Las Americas airport upstairs on the departure hall level there is a well stocked Pharmacy. What about valium or ketamine? Do those require prescriptions? Ban you recommend a couple farmacias in Punta Cana? Sincerely appreciate the info! After a few years I totally agree with what the previous person stated. Stick to the big pharmacies sure you may pay a little more but you know at least they are not expired. Also and I can't stress this enough verify verify verify. I have a severe back injury and usually I have my pills mailed here and a few times when I was waiting for them to get here I would use local brands. And after doing research I found most of them are either off market in the US and Canada or you can find very little information about them. So stick with actual approved medication and check those dates. It's not uncommon to get medication that expired like 2 to 4 years ago. But usually not that hard to get any kind of medication here it's just how much are you willing to pay and how much are you willing to risk taking stuff that are not approved in other countries. If you have a list of medication you can always check ahead of time by calling the pharmacy directly or establishing a good doctor here and having your record sent to him so they can evaluate it too. That is what I did and it's hasn't been that bad since then. I hope it helps. Hello, Is anyone familiar with the Mapre medical plans for ages 65 plus. I emailed them for info and they only have in Spanish. When translated, it appears that there really isn't any prescription medical costs. It mostly covers doctor, hospital, etc. Can someone tell me if they are aware if prescription coverage can be purchased as well or you just have to purchase on your own? Really having a hard time getting correct information in English and this may cause a big wrench in the plan to move to DR How old are you? As I understand it, if you are over 65 and have not had the insurance here, you are out of luck. This is for my Mother. She is 69 and she can get insurance through Mapfre however I am having difficulty with the translation and coverages and they have no English plan. Thank you. I am in Iberostar punta cana resort. I ran out of my Adderall gabapentin Xanax and lamictal Go to the closest pharmacy and see what you can get. Some may be controlled but you can get most without a prescription here! Restasis for dry eyes and Tirosint 75 for my thyroids. Can anyone tell me if they have these medicines? And which one are the best Pharmacies over there? The best pharmacy is going to be the one most convenient locations across the country. We tend to go to one right next to our doctors if they have prescribed something, or to the one near our grocery store for monthly refills. I don't know about Tirosint, but levothyroxine, the generic, and Synthroid, a different brand name, are available here. You can check the pharmacy websites to see if you can find your meds.
