The Santa Monica Surf Club commissioned member Marcus Torres to write its history to mark the 15th anniversary. Torres's conclusion after reviewing all records: "The club has been whatever the club needed to be at each stage. It was administrative when it needed administration. It became social when it needed community. It moved outdoors when it needed to be where the surfing is. It solved each problem as the problem arose." Torres confirmed he had not expected this finding.
"The club adapted," he confirmed. "Adaptation produces fitness. The club is fit for its purpose."
