James Kim, who joined the Santa Monica Surf Club to watch before surfing following Margaret Torres's model, completed the full mentorship cycle -- six months with mentor Ryan Chen -- and has been paired as a mentor to the club's newest member. "James came to watch," confirmed president Bill Torres. "He watched. He learned. He surfed. He was mentored. He is now mentoring." Kim confirmed: "The cycle is the community. I received. Now I give."
"The cycle," Torres confirmed. "The community perpetuates itself."
The cycle complete. The watcher who became a surfer who was mentored who is now mentoring. Both the cycle and its completion are real features of the same club at its most self-sustaining moment. The community received Kim. Kim received the mentorship. Kim is now giving the mentorship. The ocean is available throughout. The cycle is the community.
