It just came to my knowledge recently, that there exists another country rather than the Holy See City often incorrectly referred to as Vatican City inside of Italy — San Marino. Visiting San Marino last week as part of my Tuscany trip, with no particular expectation, I was blown away by its beauty as well as fantastic shopping opportunities. To get to San Marino, you must first come to Italy, as the country is located inside Italy, and has no airport or train station. San Marino has an open border, therefore no visa is required. However, it is out of the question that you need to fulfill the visa requirements for Italy to access this country. The nearest airports are Rimini, Ancona, Bologna and Forli, among which Bologna is the biggest international airport. From Bologna, take a regional train 1,5 hours, 9EUR, second class, no advance ticket required, just buy at the station or fast train 1 hour, from 9EUR, first class, advance ticket needed to Rimini, then take a 40 minute drive bus to San Marino, just outside the Rimini train station 4 EUR, ticket office right outside the station, or buy directly from the bus driver, the stop is in front of Burger King. Once you are there, it is small enough to stroll through the whole city within a few hours. Take your time to admire the beautiful shops, restaurants, cafes, old buildings and interesting sculptures, as well as exploring the charming narrow streets full of surprises and photography materials. Pause once in a while on the hilly winding road to witness spectacular views and grasp beautiful memories for your home-coming. Stop for mouthwatering food Italian dishes! Take many beautiful photos until your fingers are numb from shuttering — yes, if you are a photography fanatic, San Marino has enough shooting opportunities to fulfill your passion! The spectacular views will take your breath away, like it took mine. Finally, get your passports stamped at the tourist information centre for 5 EUR only — such a unique souvenir to bring home. Unfortunately I only knew about this after leaving San Marino. There are numerous perfume shops along the streets so there are high chances you will find that signature perfume of yours in one of these shops. Beautiful cafes, restaurants and shops along the main road, and small streets of San Marino. Italian handmade leather goods bags and shoes are also great buys in San Marino. The variety is of course not comparable to Florence, the Italian capital of leather goods. However, all the designs are carefully picked and you can for sure find adorable unique pieces which will make you proud when wearing them. My trip to San Marino was short but full of great memories of the amazing views, charming old city, fantastic shopping and delicious food. If you come to Italy, do take a day trip to San Marino and I guarantee you will bring great memories home.
