San Diego Zoo Welcomes Rare Pair of Giant Pandas in Historic Agreement with China

San Diego, CA – April 8, 2025 – The San Diego Zoo has announced the arrival of two giant pandas, marking the first time in nearly a decade that the beloved bears will reside at the renowned wildlife park. The pair, a male named Li Wei and a female named Mei Xiang, arrived this week as part of a groundbreaking conservation agreement between the U.S. and China.

The 10-year loan agreement, facilitated by the Chinese Wildlife Conservation Association and San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, aims to bolster international efforts to protect the endangered species. Giant pandas, native to China, have seen their population slowly recover due to global breeding and habitat preservation programs.

'This is a historic moment for the San Diego Zoo and for panda conservation,' said Dr. Paul Baribault, president of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. 'Li Wei and Mei Xiang represent hope for their species, and we are honored to contribute to their care and the global effort to ensure their survival.'

The pandas will undergo a standard 30-day quarantine before making their public debut in a newly renovated habitat designed to mimic their natural bamboo forest environment. Zoo officials expect the exhibit to draw millions of visitors, reigniting public fascination with the iconic animals.

Giant pandas were last housed at the San Diego Zoo in 2019 before being returned to China as part of previous agreements. The new pair’s arrival signals renewed cooperation between the U.S. and China on wildlife conservation.
