San Diego Plane Crash: Pilot Survives Incident

BREAKING NEWS: Small Plane Crashes Near San Diego Airport, Pilot Survives

San Diego, CA — May 22, 2025 — A small single-engine plane crashed near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in San Diego this afternoon, narrowly avoiding a residential area. Authorities confirm the pilot, the sole occupant, survived with non-life-threatening injuries.

Details of the Incident

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Piper PA-28 Cherokee was on approach to the airport when it experienced an apparent engine failure around 2:15 p.m. Witnesses reported hearing sputtering noises before the aircraft descended rapidly, clipping a tree and crashing into an empty field near Ruffin Road.

'I saw the plane wobbling, then it just dropped,' said local resident Maria Hernandez. 'It was terrifying, but thankfully it didn’t hit any houses.'

Emergency Response

San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded immediately, extinguishing a small fire that broke out upon impact. The pilot, identified as 54-year-old flight instructor Robert Taggart, was extracted from the wreckage and transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

'The pilot did an incredible job avoiding populated areas,' said Fire Chief Colin Stowell. 'This could have been much worse.'

Investigation Underway

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest possible mechanical failure, but officials have not ruled out other factors.

Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport, a hub for general aviation, briefly halted operations but has since resumed normal activity.

This marks the third small plane incident in San Diego County this year, raising concerns about aging aircraft and maintenance standards. Updates will follow as the investigation progresses.
