Samsung S10 reportedly hacked, raises concerns over crypto wallet security

When Samsung announced their new flagship, the S10, would come preloaded with a cryptocurrency wallet, many in the crypto space believed it to be a groundbreaking integration and a big step towards mass adoption. However, according to reports, the S10 might not be as secure as originally thought.

A recent video posted on Imgur by a user named darkshark states they managed to fool the S10’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanner using 3D printing.

Darkshark explains how they managed to bypass Samsung’s fingerprint recognition. They began by using their smartphone to take a picture of their fingerprint on the side of a wine glass. Then, they pulled the image into Photoshop to increase the contrast and create an alpha mask.

Having exported that to 3ds Max, 3D modeling and rendering software, darkshark then created a geometry displacement from the Photoshop image which created a 3D model of all the details of the fingerprint.

All that was left to do was to print it. Darkshark states it took less than 13 minutes to complete the print.

The Galaxy S10 debuted last month with a host of new features, but many were most excited about the native cryptocurrency wallet. However, Samsung Australia confirmed that, for the time being at least, the wallet was only available to users within the US, Canada and Korea.
