Sammie Louise (Rice) Sanders, of Pasadena, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2014 at the age of 88, following a short but valiant battle with lung cancer. Born December 2, 1925 to Ida Pearl and John Jackson Rice, Sammie grew up in North Little Rock, Arkansas with her younger siblings -- brother, George, and sister, Sue. She met Jack Heber Sanders in 1940 when she was just 14 and he was 20. The story goes that he told her he was going to marry her the first day they met, and they indeed married 3 years later on April 9, 1943, while Jack was still in the U.S. Marine Corps - a marriage that endured nearly 55 years, until his death in 1997. After the end of WWII, they moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas where Jack attended the University of Arkansas and Sammie worked to keep food on the table.
Following Jack's graduation in 1950, the couple lived and worked in Arkansas and Alabama before settling in Pasadena, Texas, where they raised two children, Laura Jean and David Malcolm. Once both children were in school, Sammie went back to school herself, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Houston in 1970. Earning this degree was a real challenge for her since she was still a full-time wife and mother, but she believed strongly in education and persevered, and her degree was something both she and her family were truly proud of. She went on to work as an elementary school teacher in Pasadena ISD until her retirement at age 65. After retirement, she continued in her love of teaching, mentoring many students over another 10 years as part of PISD's "Reach for the Stars" program.
Sammie has been described by many as a true Southern Belle. She took her greatest joy from her family, and nursed both David and Jack through long illnesses before their respective deaths - heartbreaks she never truly got over. She especially loved her grandson, Josh, his wife Ashley, and their children, Bradon and Kaelyn, and never gave up hope that her daughter Laura would someday come to her senses and move back to Pasadena from Toronto, Canada.
Sammie always had the most beautiful gardens around, loved having afternoon coffee with neighbors Mary and Janet, doted on her dog, Blitz (and numerous other pets over the years), and was genuinely selfless when it came to helping friends and family who needed her love or assistance. Very recently she mourned the death of her dear friend of over 50 years, Heljo Olivares, and in her final months was lovingly cared for by Heljo's daughter, Lisa.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Bayshore Hospital and Vitas Innovative Hospice Care for the wonderful care they provided Sammie in her last weeks of life.
A celebration of Sammie's life will be held at Grand View Funeral Home, 8501
Spencer Hwy. in Pasadena, on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. A visitation reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family implores all who knew Sammie to stop smoking now - if not forever, then just for a month, a week, or even a day - to protect yourself and your family from the tragedy and pain of lung cancer.
