Salma Hayek Launches New Initiative to Support Women in Film

Los Angeles, April 27, 2025 – Academy Award-nominated actress and producer Salma Hayek has announced the launch of 'Mujeres en Cine' (Women in Film), a groundbreaking initiative aimed at providing funding, mentorship, and resources to female filmmakers from underrepresented communities.

The project, backed by Hayek’s production company Ventanarosa, will offer grants to emerging Latina, Indigenous, and Afro-Latinx directors, writers, and producers. Hayek, a vocal advocate for diversity in Hollywood, revealed the initiative during a keynote speech at the Women in Entertainment Summit.

'For too long, women—especially women of color—have struggled to get their stories told in this industry,' Hayek said. 'I’ve been fortunate in my career, but I know how hard it is to break through. This initiative is about opening doors and creating opportunities for the next generation.'

The program has already secured partnerships with major studios and streaming platforms, with commitments to distribute at least five films by grant recipients over the next three years.

Hayek, who recently wrapped production on 'The Wasp', a highly anticipated thriller co-starring Natalie Portman, continues to balance her acting career with activism. Mujeres en Cine is set to begin accepting applications in June 2025.

'This isn’t just about money—it’s about changing the narrative,' Hayek added. 'When women tell their own stories, the world sees itself differently.'

Fans and industry leaders have praised the initiative, with many calling it a long-overdue step toward equity in filmmaking.
