SAGE is the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQ+ older people. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in New York City, SAGE is a national organization that offers supportive services and consumer resources to LGBTQ+ older people and their caregivers.
Our goal is to touch the lives of as many LGBTQ+ elders as we can. Stand with us as we keep up our fight for fair and equal treatment for LGBTQ+ elders.
NARRATOR: SAGE was created in 1978 by a group of students, activists, elders and dreamers. A lot has happened in 40 years. We’ve expanded from a small local nonprofit to the nation’s go-to organization on LGBTQ+ aging. Starting with the countries first safe space dedicated to LGBTQ+ elders, to creating programs helping those during the AIDS crisis, expanding services across America with the creation of our affiliate network and certification program. And we didn’t stop there. SAGE demanded a seat at the table in Washington D.C. and worked with our LGBTQ+ pioneers to push progress forward. We supported our hero and fierce elder Edie Windsor in her fight for marriage equality and defended our community from attacks by the Trump administration when they tried to erase LGBTQ+ elders. We continue to fight. We refuse to be invisible. SAGE is committed to improving the lives of all LGBTQ+ older people. Through housing

PERSON 1: No one should have to go back in the closet, especially when it comes to housing.
PERSON 2: That’s why SAGE, and its efforts to build national LGBTQ+-friendly housing, is so important to me.
PERSON 3: The fact that SAGE is sharing their housing knowledge across the country warms my heart.
NARRATOR: SAGE is changing lives through programs.
PERSON 1: Every day the music appreciation that we have at SAGE is a wonderful thing. It helps my mind, it helps my body, and the people in the room appreciate the music that I play.
PERSON 3: Art and creativity is important to me because it gives me the opportunity to share these experiences with others.
PERSON 4: You know, the highlight of my day is sharing dinners with my friends. We get closer, we start talking about the activities of SAGE, and we have a good time.
NARRATOR: We advocate for and with our elders.
PERSON 1: I’ve been a lesbian activist ever since my teens. SAGE gives me the opportunity to speak my mind.
PERSON 4: There can be nothing about us without us. That’s why I stand with SAGE and their work to support our rights in the highest levels of government.
NARRATOR: And support our pioneers through care.
PERSON 4: SAGE is a family. They care, and we care for our own.
PERSON 3: SAGE is a part of my life and local community, but I know that I’m an important part of the larger national movement.
PERSON 4: I’ve lived through tough times, and we persevere, and we’re stronger together.
PERSON 1: We are proud to celebrate 40 fierce years.
PERSON 3: I’ve been with SAGE since the beginning
PERSON 2: I am amazed, and so proud, of its growth
NARRATOR: It’s been a great 40 years, and here’s to 40 more.
PERSON 4: Because even younger people are going to need a SAGE

SAGE Metro Portland works to enhance the lives of older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender ( LGBT ) community members through education, advocacy, outreach and resource development.
We build community through social events, holiday parties, wellness events, outdoor activities and more. By scheduling educational presentations about legal and medical issues, providing cultural and creative outlets, and supporting LGBT elders at the Portland Pride Festival, SAGE Metro Portland is able to create a sense of safety and community.
SAGE Metro Portland hosts social events in order to have a safe space for LGBT seniors and allies to gather, recreate, socialize, and learn about resources. SAGE activities include monthly socials, educational presentations about legal and medical issues, cultural events, and creative outlets like writing workshops.
Integration with Friendly House’s Senior Services program allows SAGE Metro Portland to provide support in finding and accessing crucial resources and services tailored to the needs of LGBT elders.
Contact us for assistance with accessing support services, such as legal support, end of life planning, health and wellness classes, housing, social and support groups, and many other resources that support independence and dignity in aging.
We take a strengths-based approach to developing and accessing resources to assist seniors ages 60+ in remaining independent in the communities of their choosing. A Friendly House care coordinator will meet with you in your own home, and coordinate services that meet your needs.
If you’re looking for companionship, our Friendly Visiting program could be perfect for you. Our staff will match you with a thoroughly screened and vetted volunteer who will meet with you for conversation, coffee, activities of your choice—however you’d like to spend your time with a friend.
Please contact the Information and Referral specialist for more information on these programs: (503) 224-2640

SAGE Metro Detroit is a local affiliate of the national Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders ( SAGE ), the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ+) older adults through services, advocacy and programs for older adults.
SAGE Metro Detroit is looking for a Program Coordinator and a Volunteer Coordinator to join our growing team. We are being deeply dedicated to the communities we serve, and we are also deeply committed to our staff, offering flexible hybrid work models, competitive benefits, professional development, mentorship and a variety of leadership and growth opportunities.
Established in 2015 from the LGBT Older Adult Coalition, SAGE Metro Detroit is dedicated to building awareness and promoting change so that LGBTQ+ older adults may age with dignity and authenticity.
SAGE Metro Detroit has organized 9 annual LGBTQ+ Older Adult Summits, attracting over 1,000 people, more than 50 community partners, provided support for over 75 discussion and focus groups, served over 200 people through five multigenerational SAGE Table dinners, served over 50 people through our Friendly Caller Program to address social isolation among LGBT older adults.
Exciting things are in the works for SAGE Metro Detroit. In addition to our board meetings, committee meetings and seasonal events where we need volunteers for our programs need that will increase connectedness for older adults.
Want to get involved? View our volunteer opportunities below and contact the appropriate person for your area of interest.
SAGE Metro Detroit organizes monthly in-person socials with LGBT older adults. During COVID-19, we now deliver these socials via Zoom on a weekly basis. They cover a wide variety of topics, including art, politics, technology, and more. Additionally, SAGE Metro Detroit offers SAGE Tables, free multigenerational dinners to share conversation with LGBT community members and allies across the age spectrum. During COVID-19, these dinners will occur via Zoom.
Our work focuses on four key areas: information, training, programming, and advocacy. We primarily serve Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties in southeast Michigan but have worked with LGBT communities, caregivers, service providers, and allies throughout Michigan.
All older adults face significant challenges as they age, including social isolation. For LGBT older adults this issue is compounded by years of legal discrimination and the generational social stigma faced by LGBT people in historic and contemporary society, creating serious concerns for health and longevity.
SAGE Metro Detroit’s Friendly Caller Program matches LGBTQ older adults with other LGBTQ communities and allies to maintain a connection. During the current pandemic, our program is expanding to provide resources and information to help our community stay connected.
Every dollar helps us provide services, advocacy, programming and community-wide training to keep LGBT older adults connected and aging with dignity.
This has always been where my heart is. I am here to learn as much as lead, and I am honored to be able to utilize my background and skills for the betterment of a community and organization I fiercely support and believe in.
“If not me
who? As an older adult, I find my peers becoming silent. I lived through an era where SILENCE=DEATH. I speak for myself and for those who are afraid, or who have given up and let go.”
“Older adults are an underserved and often ignored community, yet it is one that we should all aspire to be part of one day.”
Being an LGBTQ community member myself, I recognize the training and services provided by SAGE are critical, and I am so excited to be a part of a talented and dedicated team that makes a difference.
“I do what I do because it’s part of who I am and, in large part, because a lot of it was for me. I needed to know that there were people out there that, if needed, I could connect with.”
“Equality is a living, breathing, ongoing struggle. If we don’t fight to continue the work of our previous generations, we will fall behind by staying still.”
“It was the social support of older LGBT folk that gave me a fresh outlook on life. Yet there is still work to be done to support the aging LGBT community and I want to be part of that . ”
Training and Programming Administrator
“My goal as an LGBTQ advocate is to empower and fight for people living within the intersections of oppression. Equality cannot be achieved if anyone feels unheard or unrecognized.”
By signing up for our SAGE Metro Detroit newsletter, you are taking an important step in your connectivity. You will receive notifications on community events, initiatives, legislation and other news that impacts the LGBTQ community.
