SR-22: Separate the Filing From the Insurance Policy

Garant Insure

The phrase “SR-22 insurance” can make a filing and an insurance policy sound like one item. It helps to separate them when reading an explanation or asking for a quote.

An SR-22 is a certificate associated with proof of financial responsibility. The insurance policy supplies coverage; the filing documents that the relevant coverage requirement is met. GEICO explains this distinction in its SR-22 guide: https://www.geico.com/living/sr22-details/

When you contact an insurer, ask about both parts. What policy is being offered? Can the insurer provide the filing requested in your notice? What will the policy cost, and is there a separate charge for the filing? Writing these as separate questions makes the response easier to understand.

Do the same when comparing written offers. Put policy details in one section of your notes and filing information in another. If an offer is unclear, ask the company to explain it before you make a decision.
