Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment, a U.S.-based tribal casino operator, told GGRAsia that it has "no longer adjusted its opening schedule" for its multibillion-dollar South Korean casino resort project. The company has "narrowed" its opening date to the second half of 2022, a spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Known as Inspire, the project is located in Incheon, near the Korean capital of Seoul. Mohegan Gaming previously said that it expects to launch the project in 2022.

"Our plans to open in the second half of 2022 reflect the reality of stricter COVID-19 compliant construction processes and design changes to create a safer environment for guests and employees," said Mohegan Gaming spokesperson.

"The pace of construction has been affected by lockdowns and quarantines in the U.S. and Asia, disrupting the movement of professional and business activities essential for the development, design and construction of projects," the official added.

According to Mohegan Gaming's latest annual report, filed in December, Inspire's first phase includes 1,250 hotel rooms, 15,000-seat entertainment venues and 40 food and beverage stores, as well as a foreign-only gaming venue with 160 table games and 700 slot machines.

A total of $5 billion in capital expansion has been mentioned over several stages over two decades. The plan will be developed in four stages, with the last stage completed by 2031, according to the Korea Times newspaper.

Mohegan Gaming said in a statement that it would adjust its design by taking advantage of the "slow" pace of construction to create a post-COVID experience focused on the safety of its customers and employees.

"Mohagan Gaming will work closely with relevant agencies to address any remaining gaps in the development process and to adjust the opening schedule," it added
