🎥 Director with a Purpose

Coogler’s first feature film, Fruitvale Station (2013), was based on the real-life police shooting of Oscar Grant. He wrote the script in just 20 days!

He was only 26 years old when he directed it, making him one of Hollywood’s youngest breakout directors.

🥊 Rocky’s Revival King

Coogler revived the Rocky franchise with Creed (2015), starring Michael B. Jordan. Fun fact: He watched every Rocky movie in one day before pitching his idea!

The famous one-take boxing match in Creed took 4 days to shoot and required Steadicam operators to swap mid-scene to keep the shot seamless.

🐾 Black Panther Legacy

Coogler was the first Black director to helm a Marvel Studios film (Black Panther, 2018).

The movie was so culturally impactful that it was submitted for Best Picture at the Oscars and won 3 awards (Costume Design, Production Design, and Score).

He almost quit filmmaking after Chadwick Boseman’s passing but returned for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) as a tribute.

While at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, he made a short film (Fig), which caught the eye of Forest Whitaker, who later produced Fruitvale Station.
