The most common way to say mom in Russian is мама (MAma). However, there are several other ways to say mom, depending on the context and social setting. Here are the ten most common ways to say mom in Russian, with pronunciation and examples.

This is the most common and neutral way to say mom in Russian. It is suitable for a variety of situations, including addressing one's own mother, as well as talking about someone's mother both in private and in public. The word carries neutral to affectionate connotations and is used in all social settings, from the very formal to the very informal.

- Ее мама работала в школе учителем русского языка. (yeYO MAma raBOtala FSHKOlye ooCHEEtylem ROOSkava yazyKAH) - Her mom worked as a Russian teacher at a school.

An affectionate way to address mom, the word мамочка can be used in most social situations. However, it can also have a sarcastic undertone depending on the context. As with other Russian words that are turned into terms of affection, the context determines whether the meaning is genuinely affectionate or is mockingly so.

- Мамочка, я так по тебе соскучилась! (MAmachka, ya TAK pa tyBYE sasKOOchilas') - Mommy, I have missed you so much!

- Ты и мамочку свою привел? (ty ee MAmachkoo svaYU preeVYOL) - Did you bring your mommy too?

The affectionate tone of мамулечка is doubled through the use of the already affectionate мамуля (maMOOlya)—a diminutive of мама—, which is then made affectionate again by turning it into another diminutive.

The word мамулечка is most commonly used when addressing one's own mother in a relaxed and affectionate environment, for example when telling her how much she is loved.

- Мамулечка, я тебя так люблю! (maMOOlechka, ya tyBYA TAK lyuBLYU) - My dear mommy, I love you so much!

Used in everyday conversation, the word мам can only appear when addressing your mother directly. It is not possible to use it as a standalone word in another context. Мам appeared as a shortened and faster way to say мама in informal conversation when addressing mom.

- Мам, ну ты где? (MA, noo ty GDYE?) - Where are you, Ma?

Another version of мам, ма is also a shortened version of мама and is used in the same way as мам.

- Ма, как ты? (MA, KAK ty?) - Ma, how are you?

Another diminutive of мама, this is also a term of affection and can be used as a form of address in very informal situations.

- Ну мамуся, ну пожалуйста (noo maMOOsya, noo paZHAlusta). - Mommy, please, I'm begging you.

The word мать carries a neutral to formal meaning. It can also have a harsher tone depending on the context. This word can be used in formal and neutral situations, but it will feel way too harsh for addressing your mom.

- Пришли он, его мать и тётка. (priSHLEE on, yeVOH mat' ee TYOTka). - He came with his mother and his aunt.

Матушка is a diminutive and affectionate form of мать. Therefore, unlike the diminutive forms of мама (such as мамочка or мамуля), this word carries a less affectionate and more respectful meaning than those diminutives. Матушка is also another name for Russia: Матушка-Россия (Mother Russia). It has somewhat archaic connotations and can be found mostly in classic Russian literature.

- Ее матушка не пустила (yeYO MAtooshka nye poosTEELa) - Her mom didn't let her come.

Nowadays considered an archaic form of мама, this is a respectful and affectionate term. You will see it a lot in classic Russian literature, so it's worth learning. In modern Russian, the word is often used as part of the idiom меменькин сынок (MAmenkin syNOK)—mummy's boy—and маменькина дочка (MAmenkina DOCHka)—mummy's girl—, to mean a child spoilt by their mother.

- Маменька, что вы такое говорите! (MAmenka, SHTOH vy taKOye gavaREEtye) - Mother, what are you saying!

The word мамаша has a neutral or a slightly patronizing meaning. It can often be heard when referring to a mother in relation to a small child, for example, when a teacher addresses all the mothers present, or a doctor addresses a mother. Мамаша is never used by a child towards their mother.

- Мамаша, не волнуйтесь,с Вашем сыном все нормально. (maMAsha, ne valNOOYtes, s VAshem SYnam VSYO narMALna) - Don't worry, mom, your son is fine.

A Russian mom in Wisconsin killed her 8-year-old son and threatened to slaughter the rest of her family — “amped up” by paranoia and terror over her homeland’s ongoing war on Ukraine, authorities said.
Natalia Aleksandrovna Hitchcock, 41, strangled little Oliver on March 30, days after also trying to drown his 11-year-old brother in the bath, according to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday in Sheboygan County.
The older boy had found his brother’s lifeless body on the floor of his bedroom while “his mother was on the bed with a big knife,” according to the complaint into first-degree murder and attempted murder charges.
The surviving boy’s screams woke their dad from a nap, and he raced to make futile attempts to save Oliver, who was pronounced dead two days later , the legal papers said.
While he performed CPR, his wife — who had no history of mental health problems — was “walking around the apartment with a knife, dazed, saying she was going to kill everyone in the house,” the complaint said.
The mom also tried to overdose on painkillers and stabbed herself in the chest in a bid to “cut her heart,” she later told cops.
“When asked if Hitchcock had any mental health concerns, [the husband] said, ‘She does now'” — and detailed her paranoia over the Kremlin’s ongoing war on Ukraine.
The husband told cops that he “was worried about Hitchcock’s mental state of mind as she watched TV with the war between Russia and Ukraine.”
Her parents were still in Russia and she was furious that she could not book flights to get home to see them, the complaint said.
In the days before killing her son, Hitchcock asked her husband to stay home from work and “buy survival gear such as a camping stove and fuel and also wanted to buy knives and guns,” the document said.
The husband “said no to the knives and guns,” but bought food and other supplies to make his wife “feel safe,” the documents said.
“He said that he felt the war between Russia and Ukraine amped up Hitchcock more than ever and that she started to drink” vodka.
She was terrified that “people were going to be coming from a bigger city to attack them” or even sell them on the dark web, the husband allegedly said.
Hitchcock later admitted similar fears when interviewed by cops, telling them she had been unable to sleep and feared the “Russian government was going to take her children and abuse them.”
“She also said that people had been looking at her strange and felt that people looked at her as a Russian spy, which caused her to feel that social workers were going to take her kids from her,” the complaint said.
She confirmed killing her son “because she did not want to see him be abused,” the complaint alleged.
She said when she previously held her 11-year-old son’s head under the water in the bath, it was “to scare him so that he would understand his life was in danger.”
“She said that she told the boys they needed to wake up and needed to see what was going on around them,” the complaint said.
Hitchock was already in Sheboygan County Jail when officers visited to tell her that her son had died two days after the attack.
“Well, I guess I accomplished what I set out to do then,” she replied in a “calm tone,” before “she began to cry softly,” the complaint said.
She again said she did it because she felt little Oliver “would be better off dead” rather than be abused over the Russian war, the complaint alleged.
Hitchcock appeared in Sheboygan County Court on Tuesday, looking back to speak to her “visibly emotional” husband, TMJ4 said .
“I’m so sorry. I don’t know what happened,” Hitchcock told him, according to the station.
She is being held on $1 million bond ahead of her next court hearing scheduled for Thursday.
