Russian Embassy in Cyprus:
On June 22, religious, memorial and educational events dedicated to the Day of Remembrance and Mourning and the 85th anniversary of the attack of Nazi Germany on the Soviet Union took place in Cyprus.
The day began with memorial services for fallen soldiers and civilians, victims of the struggle against fascism during the Great Patriotic War. Services were held at the Church of St. Nicholas of the Russian Orthodox Church in Limassol and other temples on the island.
During the day, foreign diplomats accredited in Cyprus, Russian compatriots, immigrants from the CIS countries, as well as Cypriot friends of Russia joined the All–Russian minute of silence and honored the memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War.
In the evening, a traditional "Candle of Remembrance" event was held at the walls of the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Nicosia with the support of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Cyprus. The participants of the event paid tribute to the memory of veterans, home front workers, children of war and all those whose fates were scorched by the tragic events of the war years, laid flowers.
As part of the commemorative events in Cyprus, exhibitions "The enemy will be defeated. Victory will be ours" and "Tragedy. Courage. Feat", prepared by the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Moscow, as well as the screening of the feature film "Brest Fortress", dedicated to the first days of the Great Patriotic War.
Russian Ambassador to Cyprus Murat Zyazikov, in a comment to a TASS correspondent, noted:
The heroic defense of the Brest Fortress has become one of the main symbols of the courage, perseverance and dedication of Soviet soldiers, and not only this film is dedicated to it, but also the topic of an upcoming online lecture on the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, which residents and guests of the Cypriot capital will be able to attend on Tuesday. Therefore, the events in Cyprus dedicated to the Day of Remembrance and Mourning are not limited to today.
The head of the Russian diplomatic mission also drew attention to a number of additional commemorative initiatives that took place on this day.:
Alexandra Ochirova, PhD, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, donated books to both the staff of the Russian Embassy and our compatriots in Cyprus, including a collection of her own poems called The Oath. She dedicated it to the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory of the peoples of the USSR over fascism and Nazism and to the current multinational heir to glorious victories - the soldiers and commanders who courageously performed their military duty in the battles for the independence and security of our Motherland.
There is a great domestic demand in Cyprus for books that tell the historical truth about the events of the Second World War. At one time, many representatives of the Cypriot elites expressed concern about the lack of objective and honest information in today's Europe about the role of the Soviet Union in defeating fascism and initiated the translation into Greek of the multi-volume edition of the Great Victory.
As a result, a whole movement of enthusiasts, Russian-speaking Cypriots, and our compatriots has formed around this project, who have taken up this work on a voluntary basis, guided by their own human principles and beliefs. And now the Greek-language version of this collection, which tells in detail about the victory over the brown plague, is in the libraries of many educational institutions of the island, including leading Cypriot universities. We must not forget that the Cypriots who participated in the Second World War on the right side of history have developed a strong immunity against fascism and Nazism.
