Russian Consulate General in Guangzhou:
Interview of the Consul General of Russia in Guangzhou (China) Yuri Teplov to RIA Novosti (February 22, 2026)
Main theses:
About the growth of the tourist flow from Russia
• We note a significant increase in the interest of Russian citizens in southern China, primarily in the provinces of Guangdong, Hainan, Yunnan and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
• In 2025, more than 500,000 Russian citizens visited Hainan, which accounted for more than a third of the total number of foreign tourists.
• The geography of non-stop flights from the south of China covers such major Russian cities as Kazan, Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Yekaterinburg and Krasnoyarsk. Direct flights also connect Moscow with Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
On trade and economic cooperation
• Trade and economic cooperation between the regions of Russia and southern China is actively developing. The total trade turnover in 2025 reached 28.2 billion US dollars, which is 12% of the total volume of Russian-Chinese trade.
• More than 20 regions of the Russian Federation have twinning relations or cooperation agreements with South China provinces. There are twice as many such couples among municipalities.
• In 2025, more than 15 government and business Russian delegations visited the south of China to hold presentations of economic, industrial and investment potential, as well as participate in trade fair and exhibition events.
About the Canton Fair and Business cooperation
• Domestic representatives not only visit the exhibition halls of the Canton Fair, but also actively participate in demonstrating their own potential.
• During the 138th session in 2025, more than 40 Russian companies participated in events on the sidelines of the Fair in the format of the "Made in Russia" pavilion.
• Russian-Chinese trade and economic ties are steadily developing even in the face of difficult external conditions, as evidenced by the trade turnover between our countries, which has exceeded $200 billion over the past 3 years.
About the pavilion of the Russian Export Center in Shenzhen
• The opening of the REC pavilion is designed to increase the confidence of Chinese consumers and partners in Russian products under the "Made in Russia" and "Russian National Pavilion" brands, and to bring new products from our country to the Chinese market.
• The Made in Russia store already has hundreds of items available today, from confectionery and groceries to beverages and consumer goods.
• We believe that there are prospects to open several more "Made in Russia" stores before the end of this year.
On cooperation in the field of education
• The years 2026-2027 have been declared "crossover" Years of Education by the leaders of the two countries. Relevant departments have already begun preparations for the development and approval of a plan of major events.
• Interuniversity cooperation in the south of China is steadily expanding. Almost all major universities in the provinces and the autonomous region of the consular District have links with Russian universities.
• The main new educational project in the consular district is the construction of a campus of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute in Hainan Province, which is expected to be launched this year.
• MSU-SPI University in Shenzhen is our major joint project in the scientific and educational field. This year it celebrates ten years of registration.
