A U.K. privacy watchdog has issued a warning about a Russian website that streams live footage from insecure webcams around the world.
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) reported that the site accesses information by using thousands of cameras' default login credentials, which are available online.
The hackers infiltrated a number of systems—from CCTV networks to baby monitor cameras —and are streaming views of offices, gyms, pubs, shops, even the inside of a child's bedroom.
This "is a threat that all of us need to be aware of and be taking action to protect against," said Simon Rice, group manager for technology at the ICO.
About 500 of the feeds come from the U.K., and more than 5,000 from the U.S., according to the BBC (Opens in a new window) .
In a blog post (Opens in a new window) , Rice outlined the precautions folks should take: First and foremost, change your default password.
"If you take only one security step when getting any new device, make sure it's setting a strong password," he wrote.
You should probably put a little more effort into setting up a new camera system, though. Sure, it's great to check up on your house or sleeping baby remotely. But if you don't configure the network correctly, your webcam becomes an open window into your life.
Those with an in-home (or office) camera who have no intention of remotely viewing footage should check the device's settings to turn off that function. As a last-ditch effort, Rice suggests simply covering the camera when it's not in use.
China's Foscam brand (pictured) was the most commonly listed on the site, the BBC reported, followed by Linksys and Panasonic.
The BBC said ICO provided it with a link to the Russian site, but the BBC opted not to publish it. UK Information Commissioner Christopher Graham told the news site he wants to raise awareness that this is going on. Apparently, the site in question wants to do the same, but Graham said the site should now shut down.
"Now we all know and please will they take it down," Graham said during an appearance on BBC Breakfast.
Graham plans to work with the Russian authorities and other agencies, including the Federal Trade Commission, to have the site shut down.
The FTC did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment, while the ICO simply pointed us in the direction of Rice's blog.
The threat of unwanted surveillance, however, reaches beyond webcams. But now, a new tool, Detekt (Opens in a new window) , scans Windows computers for traces of spyware.
Developed by security researcher Claudio Guarnieri, the free service was released in partnership with Amnesty International, Digitale Gesellschaft, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and Privacy International.
Detekt "represents a strike back against governments who are using information obtained through surveillance to arbitrarily detain, illegally arrest, and even torture human rights defenders and journalists," said Marek Marczynski, head of military, security, and police at Amnesty International.
