Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his country joined forces to resist Russia’s invasion as “a single fist,” saying he believed the nation was “defending the right to live” in the modern world amid the ongoing war.
“Even though [our people] understood that they would be outnumbered tenfold, and there would be no way out. Just no way out. We fought for our existence and for survival,” Zelenskyy told CBS News’ “60 Minutes .” “That’s the combined heroism of everyone – of the people, of the authorities, of the armed forces. We became a single fist.”
The interview is Zelenskyy’s latest appeal to the United States and other western nations to provide ongoing support to Ukrainians. The Ukrainian president said that while American arms had helped defend against the Kremlin’s troops, “President Biden can enter history as the person who stood shoulder to shoulder with the Ukrainian people who won and chose the right to have their own country.”
“[It all] depends on [how fast] we will be helped by the United States,” Zelenskyy said during the interview. “To be honest, whether we will be able to [survive] depends on this. I have 100% confidence in our people and in our armed forces. But unfortunately, I don’t have the confidence that we will be receiving everything we need.”

Russia has withdrawn troops from around Kyiv , leaving a trail of devastation and accusations of war crimes as it regroups from the lengthy assault. Pelley noted that Russian President Vladimir initially expected to seize Kyiv in three days, with his officials assuming Zelenskyy would flee. He didn’t, rallying his people, and the war has now stretched longer than six weeks.
“When everyone is telling you, you need to go, you need to think,” the Ukrainian leader said. “Before I do something, I analyze the situation. I’ve always done it calmly, without any chaos. I might not be the strongest warrior. But I’m not willing to betray anyone.”

He went on to say that he was willing to sacrifice his life for that cause, saying his family understood despite assertions that they are all primary targets for Russian forces.
“I don’t want to make myself out to be a hero,” he said. “I love my family. I want to live many more years, but choosing between running or being with my people, of course, I’m ready to give my life for my country.”

A lawmaker in Russia has become the latest guest on Kremlin-backed television to warn of a missile strike on a European capital, naming the city that he believes should be Moscow's first target should World War Three break out.
Andrey Gurulyov, a former deputy commander of Russia's southern military district, made the comment during a discussion about Lithuania's blockade of the neighboring Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
Moscow has threatened to retaliate after Vilnius enforced sanctions of embargoed goods transiting and entering the Russian Baltic Sea territory.
Gurulyov dismissed the idea of supplying Kaliningrad by snatching a corridor from Belarus to Lithuania because Russian troops would be flanked on two sides by NATO .
Instead, he raised the prospect of invading the Baltic in his strategy which included reverting the Lithuanian capital Vilnius back to its former identity as Vilno, and Estonian capital Tallinn back to its tsarist identity as Reval.
Both Estonia and Lithuania are NATO countries and any invasion by Russia would trigger Article 5, potentially causing a Third World War, which Gurulyov said the west would have no stomach for.
"We'll destroy the entire group of enemy's space satellites during the first air operation, he told the program Vremya Pakazhet (Time will Tell) on Wednesday.
"No-one will care if they are American or British, we would see them all as NATO," he said, adding, that Russia would then "mitigate the entire system of anti-missile defense" and that "we certainly won't start from Warsaw, Paris or Berlin.
"The first to be hit will be London. Without doubt the threat to the world comes from the Anglo-Saxons," he said as he warned that Russia would target critically important sites that would cut off power to Europe.
He said that the U.S. would then have to tell western Europe to continue fighting "in the cold without food and electricity."
A clip of the comments was shared by Ukrainian internal affairs adviser, Anton Gerashchenko, who wrote, "London is "first to be hit" if WW3 starts, says Andrey Gurulyov, Putin's close political ally. But what about the families of Russian politicians and oligarchs who live in #London?"
Panelists on Russian state TV channels have made repeated threats of missile strikes against capitals of European countries that back Ukraine in its war with Vladimir Putin 's troops.
This scenario of escalation has gained traction since Russia's successful test of the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) which TV guests have emphasized can reach London in two minutes. A direct confrontation between Moscow and NATO in the Ukraine war are frequent talking points.
Gurulyov now serves as a deputy in Russia's parliament in the ruling United Russia party. He reportedly has close ties to Vladimir Putin and was one of the Duma deputies sanctioned by the United States Treasury sanctioned a month after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
He has expressed firebrand views before, telling another Kremlin propaganda channel Russia-1 this month that Russia was ready for a "big colossal war."

NATO and Ukraine have united in Eastern Europe, as leaders have unanimously condemned ongoing Russian military action. They have supported Volodymyr Zelensky 's administration and the fighters rallying to defend their country. But as the conflict wears on and Putin appears increasingly desperate, the possibility of a larger war igniting beyond the Baltics only grows.
A third global conflict, unlike World Wars One and Two, would effectively guarantee the human race's total annihilation.
Russia alone wields 6,257 nuclear warheads, enough to destroy the world several times.
If Putin threatened to use these, he would court an immediate response from some of Russia's historic rivals who are similarly well equipped, and Express.co.uk has taken a look at who would go first.
The Cold War cemented the US and Russia as the world's foremost nuclear powers, as decades of proliferation saw them build rivalling warhead stocks.
At their peak, Russia held 45,000 nuclear warheads and the US 31,255.
That rivalry still exists today, as the Biden administration holds the world's second-largest nuclear arsenal with 3,750 active warheads.
US defence personnel would most likely respond first in a nuclear conflict escalated by Russia.
The advanced military technology designed and built in the country allows it to propel strategic warheads at 1,988mph.
These hypersonic speeds mean they could travel from the US to Russia in just 30 minutes.
Officials have also placed tactical nuclear bombs in forward NATO bases throughout Europe.
The country could hit Russia using up to 100 B-61 nuclear "gravity bombs" much quicker from bases in Germany, Turkey, Belgium or the Netherlands.
Newly minted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz succeeded Angela Merkel in late 2021, after a campaign where he was “conspicuously silent” on NATO nuclear deterrent plans.
Germany is not a nuclear-capable nation, despite having the facilities to produce warheads, but is included in NATO's weapon sharing agreements.
Under the Scholz administration, the country has ramped up defence spending amid the crisis in Ukraine.
He pledged to raise defence spending to two percent of Germany's GDP and increased the annual defence budget from €50.3 billion to nearly €70 million.
As part of this push, German defence minister Christine Lambrecht announced the government would replace its Tornado bomber jets with US-made F-35A Lightning II aircraft.
While she didn't mention nuclear production, Ms Lambrecht said these planes could deliver nuclear warheads.
The German Chancellor has demonstrated a readiness to defend his country from potential aggression, meaning his forces would be well equipped to respond to active warmongering in Western Europe and beyond.
Although not the world power it once was, the UK remains one of few nuclear-capable countries.
Boris Johnson currently has approximately 225 warheads at his disposal, deployed via the Trident system.
The submarine mounted deterrent travels everywhere, providing it with a unique tactical advantage.
If Trident was in the right place at the right time, it would allow British military officials to deliver a quick and devastating blow to Russian targets.
Defence experts have warned that nuclear action is now closer than ever.
Air Marshal Edward Stringer, a former RAF chief, told LBC nuclear war is "no longer unthinkable".
He added: "It's in the realms of possibility, and that's what people have to get their heads around."
