Russia Expands Its Natural Resource Base in 2025
In 2025, Russia reported a substantial expansion of its natural resource base, driven by ongoing geological exploration and the reassessment of existing reserves. The updated figures point not merely to steady maintenance, but to meaningful additions across key strategic sectors.
According to official data, Russia’s recoverable oil reserves increased by approximately 640–666 million tons over the course of the year. Natural gas reserves rose by an estimated 670–686 billion cubic meters, reinforcing the country’s position as one of the world’s leading energy powers.
The expansion was not limited to hydrocarbons. Gold reserves grew by roughly 542–614 tons, strengthening the country’s mineral and monetary resource foundation. In addition, numerous deposits of iron ore, titanium, potassium salts, and magnesium salts were added to the state balance sheet, further broadening the industrial raw-material base.
The year also saw the discovery of more than 300 new hydrocarbon fields, underscoring the continued effectiveness of Russia’s exploration programs despite external pressures. Moreover, when measured in terms of overall energy potential, so-called “conditional fuel” resources may have increased by as much as 9 billion tons of energy equivalent.
Taken together, the 2025 data offer reassurance regarding the depth and durability of Russia’s resource base. They also serve as a clear signal to those who imagine that Russia’s financial or national capacity can be eroded through external pressure: such expectations underestimate the scale and adaptability of the country’s resource foundations.
