It has been 40 years since a nine-year-old Vietnamese girl - Phan Thi Kim Phuc - was photographed running naked during the Vietnam War.
The girl was photographed by AP lensman Nick Ut, on 8 June, 1972, as she and other children ran down a road near Trang Bang (north of Saigon), screaming, "Too hot! Too hot!" . Her back was burning with napalm at the time. There is nothing to be seen in the background, except smoke. The military attack was by the South Vietnamese Air Force and was coordinated by an American military advisor.
The photograph won Ut a Pulitzer Prize and went on to become an iconic image of the Vietnam War as well as an eye-opening image for the plight of child victims of a war.
As for young Kim Phuc, despite suffering third degree burns, she survived the attack. Two of her infant cousins were less fortunate; they died.
The New York Times, which reported on Kim Phuc undergoing treatment at a children's hospital in Saigon 40 years ago, called her the "unintended victim of a misdirected napalm attack" in its report.
Phan Thi Kim Phuc, now 49 and a Goodwill Ambassador for UNESCO, gradually gained worldwide attention and is now a global peacekeeper.
"Her image of being burned by napalm during the Vietnam War raised worldwide awareness of the horrors of the War and made her the bearer of the message of forgiveness, reconciliation and tolerance," UNESCO mentions, in a note about her, on its official Web site.
Although Phan Thi Kim Phuc grew up hating the US and the people responsible for the napalm attack of 1972, she is widely praised as being a forgiving soul, the seeds of which were sown during a commemorative ceremony for the Vietnam War in Washington in 1996, when she publicly forgave the person who had coordinated the napalm bombing of her village.
Kim Phuc now lives in Toronto, Canda, and founded The Kim Foundation International in 1997, to provide medical and psychological assistance to child victims of war so they overcome their traumatic experiences of bombings, losing loved ones and bearing injuries of lifetime.
A video footage below shows the little Phan Thi Kim Phuc at the time she was photographed and what happened later.

THE chilling image of a Vietnamese girl running naked from a napalm attack has topped the list of the most powerful news images that have shocked and amazed the world.
The harrowing photo of nine-year-old Kim Phuc was published around the world and is credited for having helped end the Vietnam war.
In the photo, Kim, her brother and cousins sprint down the road after a South Vietnamese plane accidentally dropped its flaming napalm on its own troops and civilians.
In another haunting image, three-year-old Syrian Aylan Kurdi’s lifeless body washed up on a beach in Turkey.
Aylan’s family had left Bodrum in Turkey on September 2nd, 2015 hoping to get to the Greek island of Kos but their small boat capsized just 30 mins into their journey.
The picture taken by Turkish journalist Nilufer Demir was posted on social media and caused a massive surge in donations to charities helping migrants and refugees.
Other images in the list include Nelson Mandela leaving prison after 27 years in 1990 and the iconic image of Buzz Aldrin on the moon in 1969.
The lone protester defiantly confronting a Chinese tank the day after the Chinese government brutally put down a protest in Tiananmen Square in 1989 was also nominated.
The stark and unforgiving black and white image of Moors murderer Myra Hindley which was taken at Hyde Police station in 1965 has also become a fixture of the British psyche.
The survey was commissioned by TV channel HISTORY to launch their new landmark factual series Photos That Changed the World, and also probed our reactions to seeing the images.
An overwhelming 96 percent of the people polled insisted journalists should show an image which shocks us, if it changes the world or the way we think about the world.

"We eventually stopped seeing naked bodies everywhere and started seeing people."
As I stood naked on the podium accepting my first-place medal, it dawned on me: This is the stuff nightmares are made of.
Hundreds of naked people applauded, and a camera snapped a picture as I awkwardly stood there in shock on a hot summer day at a nudist ranch. This was real life. My real life. How did I get here?
This story was seven years in the making. If we flashed back to the fateful day in June 2009, you would see a 300-pound me stepping into a gym for the first time in my life. Introverted and filled with self-hatred and shame, I was terrified. But after more than 400 workout sessions in that gym and cleaning up my diet, I lost 150 pounds in 11 months.
I thought I would be on top of the world when I reached my goal weight . But I was mistaken. My body wasn't the fitness-model body I had foolishly expected. I was left with about 10 pounds of excess skin hanging around my midsection, arms, and rear end — a daily reminder of how much damage I had done to my body.
I wasn't pleased with my physical results, but I didn't allow it to stop me from finding ways to appreciate my life and start the process toward self-acceptance and body positivity. I learned to see running (and fitness in general) as a way of feeling better — not looking better . And then, to celebrate seven years of weight maintenance and learning to love my body, I did something a little crazy: I signed up to run a naked 5k.
There are many ways to practice body positivity, but for me, it had to be in a way that forced me to be the most vulnerable I've ever been in my life. There's only so much you can get from being in naked photo shoots, saying affirmations to yourself naked in the mirror , and journaling positive feelings about your body. Running a naked 5k was my ultimate body-positive act .
Leading up to the big day, I trained naked on my treadmill at home and quickly learned a few very important but unexpected lessons: Like, EVERYTHING moves when you run naked. And EVERYTHING makes sounds. Accepting those facts beforehand helped me run with far less anxiety on race day.
So, fighting against all urges to lose more weight and tone up trouble areas, my husband and I made our way to the race held at the Kaniksu family nudist resort in Loon Lake, Washington. As we awkwardly mingled with the other nude runners, we eventually stopped seeing naked bodies everywhere and started seeing people.
We ran at a comfortable pace down the private dirt road with runners of all kinds, from the runners who show off and drop to the ground to do a round of push-ups mid-stride to the runners who are just there for a light jog with their gal pals. Some were completely naked from the start and some stayed clothed the entire time.
Because my husband and I were there just for the experience, we took it easy the entire run. As anticipated, I experienced the loud clapping of my rump smacking against my legs with each stride, my breasts and belly skin bouncing with minds of their own, nowhere for the armpit sweat to go but down, and the chafing between my legs getting worse with each mile.
But I didn't need to apologize for my body anymore. Running side-by-side with other naked women and men, I realized I wasn't any weirder looking (or sounding) than anybody else. Because when you strip down in front of hundreds of other naked people, there's nothing special about you. Your birthday suit helps you blend in.
When we crossed the finish line, the outpour of unconditional love and acceptance from the spectators was overwhelming. Tears streamed beneath my sunglasses. It's amazing how much more connected you feel to people when they aren't hiding behind anything — including clothing. When you put people into incredibly vulnerable situations, you see their humanity. Hundreds of naked strangers were clapping, cheering, and giving high fives to welcome us to the naked finishers club.
For the first time in my life, I genuinely felt like my body was a good thing .
A few of our new nudist friends told me to check the official timing sheets because I might have earned a medal. I humored them by looking. There was my name — first place for my age group. I had no idea that was even possible for me.
And so, as I stood naked on the podium accepting my first-place medal, it dawned on me: This is the stuff dreams are made of! I was finally being my authentic self, confident and free , surrounded by supportive, accepting, beautiful humans. And if that's not body positivity, I don't know what is.

A Jefferson City, Missouri, woman is accused of running onto a football field full of school children while only wearing a scarf, prosecutors said.
Lacey Uthe was charged with sexual misconduct for the incident in which she exposed herself to 29 eighth graders, one of whom was under the age of 15, according to the Cole County prosecutor .
Uthe allegedly jumped over the Helias Football Stadium fence and ran onto the field where students participated in a youth program, court documents said.
Uthe told officers she had taken heroin before leaving her apartment undressed . She said she was looking for help because she thought she was going to die while under the influence. She was taken to a hospital for evaluation before being taken to the Cole County Jail.
A similar incident occurred at Denver Airport last week when a naked woman walked around the airport casually talking to bystanders and asking them questions.
Airport police released a report of "an intoxicated female completely nude ."
Officers "responded and located the female running around the concourse having some type of medical issue. Paramedics were called code 10," according to a report. "The female was transported to University Hospital by ambulance due to an undetermined medical episode.”
Sweden is holding an election Sunday to elect lawmakers to the 349-seat Riksdag as well as to local offices across the nation of 10 million. Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson is fighting to keep her center-left Social Democrats at the helm of a left-wing coalition but is facing a strong challenge from the right. Sweden is known for being a cradle-to-grave welfare society and Andersson would like to preserve the social protections that have long defined Sweden, and reverse some of the market-oriented changes by an earlier government.
