A HEARTBROKEN family is searching for answers after their 18-year-old daughter was found dead under an overpass after going on a first date on Saturday night.
Houston police initially ruled Jesslyn Zuniga's death a suicide but opened up the investigation after details emerged of an alleged car crash in the area around the same time.
Witnesses first told cops that they heard someone say "don't do it" before Zuniga's body was found under the overpass of the East Freeway and Gregg Street around 3 am on Sunday, KTRK reports.
It became a hit and run investigation, however, after further details emerged of a car crashing into the overpass and a driver came forward to say he'd been involved in an accident with a young woman.
Police said that a gray Dodge Ram pickup truck was seen hitting a barrier on the overpass a few times and then stopped on the shoulder of the freeway.
Further witnesses said that they had heard a disturbance on the overpass and a man shouting.
The man then reportedly fled the area on foot.
The driver of the Dodge Ram pickup truck has since gone to Houston Police and said he was involved in a crash and that a woman was thrown from his vehicle.
Further details of the alleged accident have not been released.
Zuniga's father Jose told KTRK that he refused to believe his daughter had intentionally jumped off the overpass.
"She was a young, beautiful girl full of life," he said.
"She would never jump off a bridge, she is full of life. She just graduated last year and it's not something she would do."
Jose added that a man had picked his daughter up on Saturday night to go on a first date.
He said he believed they had been talking for a month but this was the first time they were meeting in person.
Jose said that the pair were supposed to meet with some of the teen's friends on the date.
He claimed he knew something was wrong when his daughter didn't return home.
The family began to search the area and called the hospitals.
"First time and she didn't end up coming back home, she ended up dying," the heartbroken father said.
He has pleaded for witnesses to come forward as he claims the story so far is not adding up.
"If you saw anything, if you saw the wreck or a struggle, please contact police," Jose begged.
The case is currently being investigated by the hit-and-run unit within the Houston Police Department.
Anyone with information on the case is urged to contact the HPD Hit and Run Unit at 713-247-4072 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

A five-year-old Indian girl with a rare condition which caused her head to swell to twice its normal size has died.
Roona Begum, who made international headlines after images of her condition first appeared in 2013, passed away on Sunday at her home in a village in remote northeastern India.
Fatima Begum, the girl's mother, said she developed breathing difficulties and was rushed to hospital, but died on the way.
Roona Begum, a five-year-old Indian girl suffering from hydrocephalus, or water on the brain, has died in her remote village home
Her case drew international attention after pictures of her tragic condition were published in 2013, prompting a New Delhi hospital to offer to treat her for free
Mother Fatima said the girl developed breathing difficulties on Sunday night and died before they were able to get her to hospital
Roona had been just days away from a fresh round of surgeries in an attempt to return her head to normal size.
Fatima said: 'She was otherwise fit and fine. But on Sunday she started having breathing problems and I rang up my husband asking him to come back home.
Hydrocephalus, otherwise known as 'water on the brain', is a condition which causes cerebrospinal fluid to build up around the brain.
Congenital hydrocephalus, when a baby is born with the condition, is usually caused by an illness in the child such as spina bifida, or an illness in the mother during pregnancy, such as mumps or rubella.
The illness is usually treated by inserting a 'shunt' into the brain to drain the fluid. Even so, most children with the condition will develop some form of brain damage.
'He rushed home and gave her water but before we could take her to the hospital she died.'
Roona was born with hydrocephalus, a potentially fatal condition that causes cerebrospinal fluid to build up on the brain.
Her desperate parents turned to the media in 2013 in an attempt to get their daughter help, and in 2013 a New Delhi hospital agreed to treat her for free.
Over the last four years, surgeons had operated a total of eight times and managed to reduce her head circumference from 94 centimetres (37 inches) to 58 centimetres (23 inches).
The fluid build-up was putting pressure on Roona's brain and making it impossible for her to sit upright.
Despite the surgeries she was still unable to walk, eat unassisted, or speak, but her parents still held hope that further operations would eventually allow her to live a normal life and attend school.
Roona underwent two rounds of surgery last year to relieve the swelling and reduce the size of her skull, and though doctors warned she could die she lived and showed improvement
Roona learned to laugh, smile, turn her head on her own and react to her name being called following the first rounds of surgery
Mother Fatima had hoped Roona would one day lead a normal life and attend school, though surgeons warned this was unlikely
Doctors had warned ahead of the first round of surgery that she was unlikely to survive, but the girl pulled through.
Roona was then able to move her head, smile and laugh for the first time, and reacted if her name was called.
At the time Neurosurgeon Dr Sandeep Vaishya said: 'I see a lot of improvement, which I didn't expect. She has started laughing, she makes a lot of sounds and she occasionally speaks a few words.
'She has gained a lot of weight and her activities have improved a lot. But whether she will be able to live a normal life, nobody can say.'
