Theresa Russell at her very best! Miss Russell performance in this film is masterful! Not for the faint of heart. Miss Russell plays to the camera like a one woman theater performance. This is the story of a down on her luck housewife and her dissent into becoming into prostitution and eventually a street hooker. This has heavy on drama but also some of the most hysterically funny adult humor rarely seen in film(s). Theresa Russell is brilliant! She should have received at the very least an Oscar nomination for this performance. The film is rated R.

The stars are for the DVD, not the film. Although a LionsGate film, it is not available on an official US DVD (as of 4/2015), but is available on an Italian import, for those with universal systems. The disk is full-frame, which is the aspect ratio I have always seen in this movie, and the running time is the 84 min listed in most movie guides. The disk has Italian subtitles which can be turned off but ONLY from the main menu - not from a subtitle button on your remote. The sound is very muted, and the color is washed out, compared to the version shown on US cable/sat channels. The bit rate is about 1.0 Mb/s higher than a self-burned DVD-R, probably because it is in the PAL format. The print I saw on TV had both pillarboxing and letterboxing, probably because it was never upgraded for the HD channel that showed it, which makes the full-size Italian version somewhat more satisfying, though not much better in terms of image quality. All things considered, I would try to wait out LionsGate and hope for a decent US release - the import is not really worth the money unless you are desperate to have a copy of the film. In any case, for a Ken Russell movie, it is surprisingly cheap-looking, and not simply in service of the material - it looks like it was made on a shoestring.

Or anyone in this. The acting, esp by Theresa Russell, is appalling. I usually really like her and know she can act, as she was wonderful in Black Widow years before this was released, plus other roles. Ken Russell was an uneven director, sometimes brilliant, sometimes awful, and this is on the awful side. It is mostly monologue by Ms. Russell, aimed over the 4th wall, and it seems beyond her. Her accent and just basic acting are amateur. She is not believable in any way as a streetwalking prostitute. Styling her to look like a model, and her 1980s veneers don't help. Julia Roberts was more accurate in Pretty Woman, which, you know, she wasn't anything of the sort. This was pretty controversial for the time and rated NC-17, which was a step above R, I think. There is only one real sex scene, which is very tame by today's standards but it is the language throughout the film which is more explicit, although again, not very noticeable in today's film world. One notable erotic and better moment is in the strip club, which shows some performance by a couple of very capable strippers (perhaps they were ballet dancers Russell knew...). I'm not into women, sexually, and I'm not looking for titillation, but it was the highlight of the film for me only because they were the only actors who rose to the occasion.

Why don't great movies like WHORE make it to DVD? If you liked THE RAZOR'S EDGE with Bill Murray and Theresa Russell, then you'll like WHORE. Other great movies that never made it to DVD include the Brazilian movie with Sonia Braga, I LOVE YOU, and THE IN-CROWD with Jennifer Runyon. I'm just thankful that A NEW LEAF finally made it to DVD.
