If there’s one movie on Netflix that everybody’s streaming, it’s the Polish sex odyssey “ 365 Days ,” which currently sits at No. 1 on the platform’s Top 10 most-watched films in the U.S. What’s being dubbed “the Polish ’50 Shades of Grey'” topped the charts shortly after its June 7 premiere, drawing eyes for its already infamously graphic sex scenes about a mafia man who kidnaps an alluring woman after failing to protect his father from being assassinated. Massimo (Michele Morrone) gives Laura (Anna Maria Sieklucka) exactly 365 days to fall in love with him, or else she’s free to return to her unhappy life in Poland.
Cinematographer Bartek Cierlica recently spoke with Variety about shooting the movie, which is based on a steamy novel by Blanka Lipińska. Wild sexual encounters and nudity abound in this Netflix bodice ripper that’s even inspired TikTok users to take to social media to share their experiences watching the film — including a four-minute montage, set on a yacht, halfway through that is a bonafide supercut of acrobatic carnal activity where the two leads go crazy on each other’s bodies.
“We wanted the camera to be as much invisible as possible, to let them act, so indeed the takes were very, very long,” Cierlica said. “We created the most intimate atmosphere we could for the actors. We reduced the on-set crew to an absolute minimum. As it was handheld I was following their action, and trying to show their passion in a natural but beautiful way. We wanted this sex to be pretty authentic. We wanted the viewer to hear their whispers, heavy breaths and we wanted to show the sweat, passion. Be natural, authentic, but not to cross the border of pornography.”
Whether or not audiences are watching the entire film, or skipping around just to see the steamiest bits, is no matter for Netflix, because it still counts as a “view” on the platform either way, contributing to its continued place in the top 10. But Cierlica said the goal wasn’t to create something to be consumed like pornography.
“We didn’t want to create porn, but at the same time, we wanted to do justice to the book that is pretty full of very intimate and passionate sex descriptions,” he said. “I knew that as a DP I was walking on very thin ice. It is always a big challenge when you have to bring to life a story that people know and have their idea about. Here the challenge was doubled — how to make it seductive and erotic within the borders of general good taste and my aesthetic.”
While the story is rooted in elements of Stockholm syndrome and date rape, the cinematographer said that “365 Days” is meant to be an empowering adult fairytale for women. “The female hero is far stronger and more emancipated than the girls from old fairy tales,” he said.
The film, directed by Barbara Bialowas and Tomasz Mandes, has received scathing reviews, but that’s not stopping Netflix users’ curiosity as the movie continues to hang on in Netflix’s top chart.

I enjoyed watching this, for me it was like a fairy tale. A strong powerful dominant rich man that know what he wants. Granted he kidnapped her, he took care of her. I loved every bit of it and lets be real if you want to call it porn fine, at least they look better than real porn stars, I cant wair for the sequel

I absolutely love this movie and what’s its deep statement is about. Yes, it seems more sexual like a beginner start to real porn and there are some scenes that look like it’s the real thing, especially on the boat, but this movie gives me hope of finding someone who appreciates me for me. Basically, Italians and polish people has a temper. I know. I’m both. If the movie didnt have the main character with a raging temper, would you still watch it? And as for the actors DECIDING to play the sex characters in this movie was their choice. Why was it disrespectful to the actors if they are the ones showing their naked body to the world? If anything, that takes a lot of courage making a movie where they are going to show their body off to make a movie that they know is going to be worth millions. Everything is about money. And I loved watching this. I hope theres a part 2 movie cuz I’m dying to know what happened in the tunnel. I heard Laura is alive in the book.

This movie was definitely “soft porn”. So if that’s too much for you, don’t watch this movie. At first I wasn’t going to watch as I wasn’t in the mood to watch a foreign film. I liked the concept of the movie. But, there wasn’t enough “story” it seemed as if the main focus is on the sex. When you read the details on Netflix there is nothing stated that would give you the idea there would be extremely erotic. I’m so glad I didn’t watch this with my son. 3 stars out of 5
Then clearly you don’t understand, or Worse maybe you do, that it is a piece of the actor and a diminishment of their power so that people can use them as masturbatory material. Don’t trouble to deny it. Yes in real life people have sex, but no one ever actually gets to observe them unless of course they’re living in perverted lifestyles, unlike violence which often is unfortunately public. No did he represents intimacy and is reserved for husband and wife and yes I need male and female in accordance with the laws of God. And such a relationship there’s not supposed to be any power over the other and so being stripped of their clothing and metaphorically their power is a natural state for husband and wife in moments alone. Your desire to see other people naked and have sex simulator door otherwise indicates a character problem typical of unfortunately much of the human race. My previous posting it’s a partial explanation of why it is evil why it is always disrespectful of actors and actresses.
But it is porn. Is designed to it sexually excite the audience and the be used as masturbation material which of course it is online doing just that. It is also abuse of the actors and disrespect them them. You can try to justify it all you want but it is porn.
Clothing is a sort of armor, it represents power. The nicer the clothes the more income which also represents power. It is a sad dark part of humanity that people seek power over others. Nudity and sex simulated or not simulated in film is always exploitive without exception. Actors and actresses who do it either have emotional problems when they voluntarily and willingly do it, and others may do it out of fear of being blacklisted from their jobs so consent is somewhat iffy. In any event the purpose of nudity and sex is always to appeal to the audience’s prurient interest. Always!
Erotic entertainment really hits the mark. I enjoyed it. I don’t understand all the bad reviews. Give it credit for what it is, a diversion into a fantasy with sex and beautiful people.
Loved all the music, beautiful scenes, great casting, loved all the characters, even humorous parts. The movie was well done. Massimo does kidnap her but he doesn’t rape her (close but holds back) I love Sicily so I loved Location. The sex scenes could have been a little less graphic and I still would have liked the Love Story.
i hated that movie, it was horrible. I can’t believe people say it’s amazing whereas the main character was RAPED. I really don’t recommend watching it, it’s a waste of time.
