Gallery: Kate Middleton: Wardrobe malfunctions and royal mishaps
Kate Middleton is the butt of a lot of jokes on social media this week, but is she really damaging the royal family's reputation? Some say yes.
New photos of the Duchess of Cambridge's naked bottom were published this week by a German tabloid and again by an Australian newspaper owned by Rupert Murdoch. She had a Marilyn Monroe moment during a trip to Australia with Prince William last month, when wind from a helicopter they were boarding appeared to reveal she wasn't wearing underwear with her blue-and-white Diane von Furstenberg dress.
The cheeky picture was reportedly sold to the highest bidder after British publications refused to print the "tasteless" image. Germany's Bild am Sonntag printed it side-by-side with photos of Khloe and Kim Kardashian, "backsides which have moved us these past few days."
Kate Middleton tries to prevent a wardrobe malfunction as she arrives with Prince William and their son Prince George at Wellington Military Terminal, Wellington, New Zealand, Monday, April 07, 2014.
However, it's unlikely the St. James Palace will take legal action the way they did when topless photos of Middleton sunbathing on vacation appeared in a French magazine two years ago.
Why? For starters, her Down Under fashion mishap occurred during an official visit while photographers were following the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
Toronto's The Star also points out Middleton should've realized helicopters make lots of wind that can blow skirts up -- or at least worn underwear: "Always wear underwear. Not a thong. A thong is not underwear. A thong is idiotic."
And on top of that, this isn't the first time Middleton -- who married into the most photographed family in the world -- has made a you-know-what out of herself.
As The Daily Beast points out, England's Queen-in-waiting has erred in public at least half a dozen times since the royal wedding. Her yellow frock flew up during a Canadian tour in 2011; she flashed her thighs at the Harry Potter studios last year; her underwear was visible at her last official appearance before giving birth to Prince George; and her "post-baby body" was firmly on display when her her shirt bounced up as she played volleyball, showing her taut tummy.
"How mortifying for any woman to be pictured in such an unedifying way," The Daily Mail's Amanda Platell wrote. "But I couldn't help but think that surely Kate could have tried a little harder to keep her modesty under wraps? As a relatively seasoned member of the Royal Family, isn't it time she made more of an effort to cover up?"
The Daily Telegraph's Annette Sharp adds that British media have typically respected the royal family's desire for privacy, but understands why outlets in other countries don't follow an "antiquated code of etiquette" when Middleton doesn't protect her own modesty.
"Why should the media be responsible for turning a blind eye when the royals aren't always vigilant about keeping themselves nice?" Sharp asks.
But hey, Kate's not the only one causing a royal uproar. Prince Harry, who's currently being impostered on a U.S. reality show "I Wanna Marry Harry," was famously caught on camera naked in Las Vegas in 2012. And Middleton's cousin Katrina Darling is a burlesque dancer and model who's posed nude on several occasions.
Others, meanwhile, approve of seeing a little skin from the 32-year-old Duchess Catherine:
"She's got a gorgeous body, and if I had a rear end like hers, I would pray for wind," Kathie Lee Gifford said Thursday. "Just let it fly, baby, and show the world what you got, 'cause she's gorgeous."
What do you think? Should Kate Middleton make better fashion choices, or is a little flesh not a big deal?

These following pictures all show a side of the Royal Family which they did not want you to see.
By Cheish Merryweather Published Apr 27, 2017
The British Monarchy and the media have had a love/hate relationship over the years. The Royal Family have 3.6m Facebook fans and 2.6m followers on Twitter, proving that they are still very much adored by the public for their traditional values. They have their own team of Royal aides who control everything the media knows about the family and that's how they would like for it to stay.
But it's not that easy, as the press are doing everything they can to break down the Royal privacy barrier so they can get as close and personal as possible. The Sun’s royal photographer Arthur Edwards, explained, "Kensington Palace thinks they can control it all themselves. They want to ignore newspapers - but the newspapers aren’t going anywhere." Another senior journalist added, "I think they basically want levels of privacy around them and their lives which society is not willing to give."
These following pictures all show a side of the Royal Family which they did not want you to see. Palace officials want these images buried for good - but for now, they are not going away anytime soon.
This was the photo that shocked the world in 1992. The marriage of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, who were at the time Duke and Duchess of York, was failing and the Duchess had been linked to several different men in the press.
Then The Mirror got hold of pictures taken of American Financial Manager John Bryan sucking on the toes of a topless Duchess in Southern France. The Royal Palace were left feeling disgraced as the images were plastered all over the front pages.
The Queen asked the Duchess to leave the $50 million 12-bedroom Sunninghill Park, Berkshire, a home that was gifted to her and Prince Andrew 20 years earlier. She was also asked to leave London so she could keep a low profile following the scandal and was not invited to attend another Royal event until 2008.
17-year-old Virgina Roberts (pictured above) claimed in court papers that she was paid $400 to "service" Prince Andrew. She claims that the activities took place in London, New York and on a private Caribbean island. Considering the various locations the intercourse took place, Roberts was underage in the States where the legal age is 18-years-old.
According to court documents, Roberts claimed, "I was 17 at the time. (Others) were making lewd jokes about ‘Randy Andy’. I had the impression (Prince Andrew) had come there to have sex with me. There was no other apparent purpose for him to be there." Adding, "I was told to go upstairs with Andy and to go to the room I thought of as the dungeon. I had sex with Andy there. I was only paid $400 from for servicing Andy."
The above photo was used as evidence that the two had met and one that Prince Andrew's legal team had never wanted to see the light of day.
In 2002, Kate Middleton was asked by a close friend if she would model lingerie on a catwalk. The outfit Kate wore cost less than $50 to create but won her a place in the heart of Prince William as it was revealed when he watched the show, he fell in love immediately. (For reasons we don't really have to make obvious.)
The young couple both studied History of Art at St Andrew's University for four years and during this time became very close. The dress Kate wore now sits in the wardrobe of its designer, Charlotte Todd. Considering its Royal history, the item's value has now rocketed in value and is believed to be worth around $100,000. She told the Daily Mail, "The dress is a part of fashion history – the moment William could first have fallen in love with Kate – and that makes me really proud." Adding, "If it hadn’t been see-through, William might not have noticed her. I definitely think it has a played a part in the royal love story."
Now Kate is set to be the future Queen of England, Royal aides would prefer if these pictures disappeared for good.
Five years before Prince Charles met Diana Spencer, he had fallen in love with Camilla Shand. Despite their noticeable chemistry together, they both married other people, which was likely them both following pressures from their own families. When Prince Charles proposed to Diana in 1981, she was 19 and he was 31. A journalist asked him if he was in love, to which he replied: "Whatever 'In Love' means."
Then the "Camillagate" tapes emerged, a series of recorded phone conversations between Prince Charles and Camilla announcing their love for each other - it was very clear they were involved in a full-blown affair. In 1994, Princess Diana confirmed the affair as she revealed during a televised interview, "In a televised interview later that year, Diana, who has also admitted to adultery, says "There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded."
Prince Charles later remarried to Camilla and the above photo is a reminder that the couple should have always been together from the very beginning.
In 1995, following her divorce from Prince Charles, Diana broke royal protocol by allowing the BBC into her home to record a tell-all interview. During the jaw-dropping one-hour special, she revealed that for five years she had been having an affair with military man James Hewitt. Many speculated that Prince Harry (who has naturally red hair the same as Hewitt's) was a product of this affair.
Hewitt told the Sunday Mirror, "Admittedly the red hair is similar to mine and people say we look alike. I have never encouraged these comparisons and although I was with Diana for a long time I must state once and for all that I’m not Harry’s father." The above photo shows Diana presenting her lover with a Polo trophy as young Prince Harry looks on.
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas - unless you're Royal Prince Harry then your wild antics are splashed all over the tabloids the very next day. British-born party girl Carrie Reichert (pictured above) revealed to The Mirror that she had a "drunken fumble" with the Prince in his hotel room.
She was handpicked, along with nine other girls, to continue the party back in his penthouse suit. Carrie said, "We kissed, he was naked at the time, and pretty open. It was a drunken fumble. It wasn’t romantic, just fun." She added, "He was a gentleman, but he was so wasted. The alcohol affected him. I was there for 15 to 20 minutes."
Both Prince Harry and Prince William (who can be seen in the background looking a little worse than usual) certainly were not conducting themselves as the young gentleman they are expected to be.
Place officials were left furious when Kate Middleton was photographed sunbathing topless during her honeymoon with Prince William. The newlyweds, whose wedding was watched by more than 72 million people around the world, retreated to the South of France to get away from the media - but the paparazzi has different ideas.
The above pictures were printed in several French magazines as Royal aides pressed charges and began damage control. In Britain, the pictures would not be allowed to go to print but the French press plays a completely different game.
An official statement released from the palace read: "The incident is reminiscent of the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, and all the more upsetting to the Duke and Duchess for being so."
The Sun decided to publish some photos of Prince Harry grabbing his "Crown Jewels" and the images sent the Royal Palace into meltdown. Harry, who is fifth in line to the throne, was snapped on a passer-by's mobile phone as he stood around naked at the 5-star Encore Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. The hotel boasts $7,000 a night penthouse suites, which was the backdrop for Harry's game of "Strip Billards."
The pictures were printed in the US press only at first as British newspapers have to respect the Prince's privacy. However, considering Harry was in a public place, The Sun decided to throw out the rule book and splash him across their front page anyway.
The picture was seen more than 150 million times around the world and landed Las Vegas what would have been the equivalent of $23 million in advertising costs. The Las Vegas Tourism Board stated, "God bless Prince Harry. He made us a bunch of money."
The above photo was likely from a private collection of pictures belonging to either Prince Charles or Princess Diana, as his groping on her breast is far from Royal behavior. The couple, who were expected to be the next King and Queen of England, married at St Paul's Cathedral in July 1981, the wedding was watched by more 600,000 people on the streets of London and an estimated 750 million watched the live broadcast.
The marriage was clearly doomed from the start as Diana wrote in a private letter to a friend, "The honeymoon was a perfect opportunity to catch up on sleep...." She also added that there was certainly no baby making during their time away, as she wrote: "Don't despair, there won't be another baby Wales until I've had a decent rest."
Towards the end of their failing marriage, Prince Charles and Princess Diana were making headlines around the world following a disastrous trip to India in 1992. The body language between them both proved everything, as they constantly shied away from each other and at one point Princess Diana even moved her head as her husband tried to kiss her.
Robin Kermode, communications and body language coach, told The Daily Mail, "The distance between them appears to be their choice. Their hand gestures seem closed. Notice that they are not mirroring gestures at all. There is nothing ‘shared’ in their body language here. They seem to be two strangers." Adding, "(Charles) is looking away, completely unconnected with the events happening before him. He looks dreadfully sad and tired."
Following her divorce from Prince Charles, Diana was no longer considered a Royal by the press which meant that nothing was off limits when it came to the paparazzi. During this girl's holiday, the press climbed a wall to take snaps of Diana as she lay in the sun without her bikini top. Pictures of her were selling for thousands and everyone was after a cut.
A private life for Diana was near impossible and Prince William has vowed not to let "history repeat itself." In an open letter, he criticized the paparazzi for the techniques they used in order to get pictures of his two young children. He wrote, "It is, of course, upsetting that such tactics - reminiscent as they are of past surveillance by groups intent on doing more than capturing images - are being deployed to profit from the image of (young children). In a heightened security environment, such tactics are a risk to all involved."
The Queen was less than impressed when she came face-to-face with National Gurning Champion Tommy Mattinson during a trip to Cumbria, England. She rarely displays anything more than a neutral smile so this photo of her clearly unhappy with the gurner was a rare moment. Prince Phillip was by her side and he advised Mattinson, "Don't stay like that for too long or your face will stay like that."
The National Gurning Championships have been held annually for decades and competitors have to pull a ridiculous face to be crowned champion. Mattinson has been crowned the winner a total of 16 times proving that the Queen was in the presence of a true professional. Although she probably would prefer if this moment was forgotten about.
Princess Diana started a romantic affair with Dodi Al Fayed, the son of Harrod's boss and multi-millionaire Mohammad Al Fayed, and the photos did not please Royal aides. Diana appeared to be relaxing with her new beau as she was topless and they were also caught constantly frolicking with each other on board the luxury yacht.
In 1997, Diana and Al Fayed both died when their car crashed into a wall, while they were being chased by the paparazzi on motorbikes through a tunnel in Paris. Diana's brother, Lord Earl Spencer, revealed during a TV interview after his sister's death, "Diana was truly, repeatedly traumatized by the worst aspect of the paparazzi, particularly after she effectively left the royal family."
He added, "I remember (Diana) telling me one of the worst paparazzo guys in London had actually said to her, 'I'll be there every day of your life until you're dead, and then I'll be filming your grave.' Obviously, he didn't know she was going to die so young, but it was that menacing thing."
Zara Phillips, the second child and only daughter of Princess Anne, is currently 16th in line to the throne. During her teenage years, she had a rebellious side but nobody suspected she would break Royal protocol by piercing her own tongue when she was 19-years-old.
The visible body art appeared around the same time she secured a sponsorship deal with a leading betting company to help cover the costs of her equestrian career - another big no-no for a granddaughter of the Queen of England. She was labeled the "Royal Rebel" by the media and made headlines for her unruly behavior before her cousin Prince Harry could even get a look in.
Zara doesn't have a Royal title by the request of her own parents. She told The Daily Express, "(I've) had a great time not having a title. My cousins obviously do have a title and sometimes don’t have as much freedom as they should." Maybe for Zara, she's had a little too much freedom.
As 72 million people watched the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, there were many gasps of astonishment as Princess Beatrice stepped out of her car. Her hat, which was designed by Philip Treacy, was compared online to a toilet seat, an octopus and was even granted its own Twitter account by pranksters online.
Treacy revealed to The Observer that he designed the hat with her Royal heritage in mind. He believed she looked like a "beautiful, exotic, Victorian doll." Adding, "Princess Beatrice is Queen Victoria's great, great, great, great granddaughter and looks like Queen Victoria."
Discussing the backlash surrounding the hat, he argued, "She is only 22 and there was a little bit of bullying going on. I didn't give a f*** about 140,000
