STARRED REVIEW, School Library Journal (May 2018) Gr 2-5-Lies taps into the powerful nature of love, loss, grief, and hope in his latest picture book. Evan, a fox, and his dog are best friends and in a series of acrylic, oil, and colored pencil vignettes, they are shown attending a fair, playing games, and, most important, working in Evan's meticulously groomed garden. These loving scenes are abruptly cut short by a large spread of white space with spare text stating: "But one day, the unthinkable happened." On the opposing page, white space surrounds a grieving Evan as he mourns the loss of his dog. In his grief, Evan destroys the garden that reminds him so much of his friend and weeds grow in its place. When a pumpkin vine sneaks into the garden, Evan allows it to take root and with it, hope returns. With lyrical figurative language, Evan transitions from being devastated by heartache to a being willing to step back into the world again. With his pumpkin, Evan rejoins his friends at the fair. Although it's not the same without his best friend, he enjoys himself again and even wins a prize for his pumpkin. His prize and the hope of all those who suffer love's loss is a chance to love again with a new puppy. While best suited for independent readers or shared moments during a loss, this poignant picture book provides an exquisite depiction of grief and hope. VERDICT A remarkable first selection for all libraries and a helpful guide for children and adults who are going through their own rough patches. - -Rachel Zuffa, Racine Public Library, WI

A story about sadness, and an emotional journey. Well written for young minds. Focuses on the characters emotions following a loss.

Read it to your child/grandchild, or if they're older, let them read it themselves. The story is kind but doesn't pull any punches - loss is hard - and yet there's hope on the other side. A positive, meaningful and realistic resolution. Helpful for a child who's experienced loss, but also helpful for any child to develop coping strategies for those losses which will inevitably come to all of us. I found myself reminding me of it too. This is a rough patch. Joy can come again. :)

Clever play on words; the garden turns into a rough patch filled with weeds, and Evan goes through a tough time when his dog dies. But a rough patch implies something temporary, and Evan goes through an adjustment process but comes out on the other side. In this story Evan and his dog do everything together, including cultivating a magnificent garden. When his dog passes, Evan is sad, moody, and depressed, and in a fit of anger cuts down the garden. He wants the garden to be as sad as he is so he lets prickly weeds grow instead and he even trims a bush into a scary figure. Still, when he finds a pumpkin vine he decides to let it grow. After all, its stems are kind of prickly. Over time he cares for it and it grows and grows. He takes it to the fair and has it weighed for a contest. He also takes some time to enjoy the rides, booths, and good food, and he chats with friends. Just maybe he's recuperating a bit. When his pumpkin wins a prize, he chooses money over a new puppy. But, hearing a noise from the puppy box, he takes a peek. The last page has no text, but we see Evan has a companion as he drives home. Your youngster may get emotional over the loss of a dog, too; the story is simple but gripping. The author is awesomely talented as illustrator; all the pictures are vibrant and colorful and you feel a part of the community. However, one page in the book startled me so it may also have that effect on kids; where Evan is angry about the loss of his dog and he swings his hoe angrily. Overall I liked the book but this one page may need some interpretation or buffering by an adult.

I liked the entire plot and exquisite illustrations by master author Brian Lies. Readers will see how every page has remarkable, telling phrases and illustrations to match. He uses animals to share an important concept. The story is about a farmer whose pet companion accompanies him everywhere. They are inseparable, those two. The farmer who is expert in the garden enjoys working alongside his beautiful faithful friend. The time comes when his faithful pet dies. What will the garden grow?

I went to an exhibition displaying different children's book illustrators and it was love at first sight. They have at the place a few copies of this book and we grabbed one. As my husband and I read it quickly with my son, all of us got watery eyes. He had moved to a different country just few months back and our son didn't want to talk about his old friends. Reading about the Foxy grieving the loss of his pet, made him open up. On the way back home I order a copy of book through Amazon using the cellphone. It is a nice story, with a loving end.

This book portrays the anger and anguish of losing a pet, and the slow healing afterwards.

I purchased this for my 6 year old who is deeply in love with our golden and exteremly terrifed of the thought that one day she will die and be gone forever. After reading the great reviews, I had high hope that this would help him cope with his fear and maybe understand that it is okay to lose a pet or a loved one, but I feel that the ending didn‘t quite deliver the message..At least not for a kid his age. HE doesnt get why things got better when he grew the pumpkin and went to the fair, or he picked up the puppy as a prize. He was crying reading this book and I dont think the ending help. I was expecting a different ending to the story. Overall I think it is a cute book, but I think it might be more suitable for older kids?

I adored this book - grief is hard for all ages, but books like this help kids and adults deal with their feelings in a way that feels manageable. The illustrations are beautiful. This book has made it onto my list of books to gift after a loss (for adults, too!) when sometimes there are no good words to say - when you just need to process and feel. Definitely recommend.

Rough Patch Fire Information Email: 2021.RoughPatch@firenet.gov Phone: 541-482-1331 Hours: 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Summary: The Rough Patch Complex on the Umpqua National Forest started July 29 when 20-plus lightning fires resulted from thunderstorms in the area. Several more fires were added to the Complex including the Jack Fire when another storm moved through August 1, bringing the total identified fires to 42. Northwest Incident Management Team (IMT) 13 (Type 2) managed the Complex along with the Jack Fire.
On August 16, 2021, the Great Basin Management Team 2 (Type 1 IMT) assumed command of the fires at 6:00 a.m. Total size of the Rough Patch Complex was 12,956 acres. Several smaller fires had been contained by this time, with the largest fires being the Chaos, Little Bend Creek, Near Minky and Buckhead.
On August 28, Northern Rockies Team 1 (Type 1 IMT) assumed command of the fires. The Rough Patch Complex then consisted of four fires: Chaos, Little Bend, Buckhead and Near Minky.  On September 10, Great Basin Management Team 2 (Type 1 IMT) assumed command of the Complex. On September 23, Northwest Team 7 (Type 2 IMT) assumed command of the fire Complex at 6:00 a.m. The Rough Patch Complex consists of four primary fires, Chaos, Little Bend, Buckhead and Near Minky.  The Smith Fire from the Devils Knob Complex is in close proximity to the Near Minky Fire but managed by another incident management team. Multiple precipitation events drastically reduced the fire behavior moving the suppression tactics to suppression repair efforts. The Rocky Mountain Type 2 Blue Team assumed command of the fire on October 1, with the intent of reducing the footprint of the fire suppression tactics and continue the suppression repair efforts.
The Rough Patch Complex is being managed under a full suppression strategy. Public and firefighter safety is the number one priority. In addition, protection of communities, timber resources, private property, highway corridors and recreational improvements are key considerations.
