Old friends Ronnie Lane & Pete Townshend join forces in late Winter 76 / Spring 77 and the result was: " Rough Mix". The Who had been idle in the studio for almost two years at this point. Their last project "The Who By Numbers" was a great record but more than a few folks took it as if it was a Pete Towshend solo record because of the theme of Pete's songs were very personal and Roger didn't sound comfortable singing that batch of songs. The overall sound of "The Who By Numbers" wasn't considered a bold move forward and Pete was writing songs that looked back and his tone was quite angry on that recording. Overall, that project wasn't as popular than if Pete had writen another rock-opera and it wasn't considered worthy to stand next to his greatest works. That said, a lot of us approached: "Rough Mix" as if was the new "Who" record. Well, it's not that BUT it stands on it's own merit as one of the best projects that Pete was ever involved in. Ronnie Lane, had been on his own for a few years at this time and he is an important partner for Pete on this piece of work. He is of great contrast in style to Mr. Townshend and helps "Rough Mix" work as a balanced record. His tunes: "Nowhere To Run", "Annie" & "April Fool" seem to have had an amazing effect on Pete's writting and playing to free him up from the turmoils of The Who and the results here are some of the best Pete Songs, some of you have never heard. It all begins with "My Baby Gives It Away" a very loose and happy but raunchy love song that sounds nothing like The Who has done since "Magic Bus", Pete sounds like a new man on a mission and it's a good opener. Ronnie, get's to shine on "Nowhere to Run" & "Annie" and he seems a little more relaxed than Pete, but he sure can write good tunes. The title tune is from a studio jam the boys undertook with Eric Clapton, and it's just OK but it does not hold interest for repeated listenings. Same goes for "Catmelody" as you can tell this also devolped from a jam featuring a few guys from The Rolling Stones. But, "Keep Me Turning" is the great lost Who song that we had been waiting to hear for years...fantastic !!! The same could be said for: "Heart To Hang Onto", as this could have been an epic number if Roger had the chance to sing on this, both of these great songs, still pop up in Pete's solo concerts to this day . For my money the best thing recorded for this project was the great: "Misunderstood" it is as loose as you could ever get from Pete, but at the same time it has a very tight focus due to his writing...fantastic plus two. And let's not forget: "Street In The City" which is just Pete, and an orchestra doing a: "Mini-Opera", this experiment works for some but is a shock to lovers of: "Live at Leeds" as our hero has done a 180 from the power chords of old, and on this has steered close to a classical work. I think it is an experiment, that he indeed pulls off well, and it's rumored that Pete has demos of more along this line, I hope they get to see the light of day Things come to a close with one of Baba's favorite songs: "Till The Rivers All Run Dry" and it's like a prayer, as was the intention. This being the: "Deluxe Edition", there is an essay on the making of this classic and complete lyrics and recording information. Three bonus tracks are added here; "Only You" & "Silly Little Man" by Ronnie Lane and another studio jam called: "Good Question", they are OK, but they are not the great lost recordings we are searching for. "Rough Mix" still holds up well almost thirty years later and this is the edition to purchase, Ronnie went on to rock in Heaven, and Pete didn't die OR get old, thank goodness. This is one of Pete's finest efforts, and with Ronnie's help, the mix is good. Four Stars!!!

Great album but even better this is a hated dual disc, which I don't have a problem with, the DVD is in surround. Essential.

I certainly hadn't remembered that this album came out all the way back in 1977. Don't remember the first time I heard it. Tom Petty (RIP) played a couple of cuts on his Buried Treasure show from time to time. I had to get it. I also hadn't remembered just how good this album is (to me). For me, My Baby Gives It Away and, Street In The City are two favorites, however, after and in between those two are jewels like, Keep Me Turning, Misunderstood, the title cut - Rough Mix, April Fool, Heart To Hang On To, Till The Rivers All Run Dry. Oh, did I mention, Annie, Catmelody and Nowhere To Run. Yes, I think this album is brilliant from start to finish, don't know why I waited sooooooo long to get it. In my ledger, Five Stars.

Pete Townshend solo albums can be pretentious affairs. Not that that is such a bad thing, as Townshend had the talents to back up his pretentions in most cases, but it did not always ensure enjoyable listening. Here he teams with fellow ex-mod Ronnie Lane, late of the Faces for a rather down to earth affair, that I think is one of the best albums he had ever been involved with. At the time Townshend had been painted into a corner with the Who by both his "Hope I die beforeI get Old" line as well finding a new direction for his aging full time band, The Who. ROUGH MIX low key approach allows him to blow off some steam without being held to making the big statements expected from the Who a the time. Ronnie Lane contributes a folksy side that is the perfect balance to Townshend's arty approach. Lane's NOWHERE TO RUN, ANNIE and APRIL FOOL are beautiful highlights featuring relaxed aucoustic settings. He duets with Townshend effectively on the closing country standard TILL THE RIVERS ALL RUN DRY. All this is not to take away from Townshend's efforts. MISSUNDERSTOOD and STREET IN THE CITY are successful visits to his more esoteric range, while KEEP ME TURNING and HEART TO HANG ON TO ARE full blooded rockers closer to his Who nmaterial. MY BABY GIVES IT AWAY and ROUGH MIX are down and dirty rockers that are looser than his usual fare. ROUGH MIX is a great 70's relic that stands the tests of time and provides a solid look at the fun side of Pete Townshend that he tends to keep hidden.

According to the liner notes off the vinyl album, Pete Townshend and the late Ronnie Lane play all sorts of instruments and "very involved mind games" not to mention the fact that taken as a pair, and as the photo attests, they are truly the rock & roll cro-magnons when it comes to their looks. But appearance means nothing when it is talent that counts, and the mind games resulted in a pearl of a recording effort. There was a hint of what Townshend and Lane were capable of on Evolution on Who Came First. The hint blossomed with Rough Mix. The other reviewers have it right, the two gems on this are Keep Me Turning and Heart To Hang Onto. Street in the City is overproduced in my opinion, but the rest is a solid effort, with an especial nod to Till the Rivers All Run Dry, a great last cut on a par with Pavardigar on Who Came First. Townshend as a solo act is not The Who, he is Pete Townshend and teaming up with Ronnie Lane makes as sublime a product as can be found. The supporting cast is superb, with Eric Clapton helping out on guitars, Henry Spinetti providing a steady beat, and Rabbit on keyboards. You don't need to be a Townshend or Lane fan to appreciate Rough Mix, just someone who loves to listen to rock and roll. RIP, Ronnie.

Keep Us Turning

This album has so much heart. It's full of sweetness, poignancy, striking lyrical ideas and effortless musicality. Townshend and Lane write and perform their beautiful, often simple and gentle, songs and tunes in a modest, unassuming and understated manner. The result is memorable and irresistible. You will never get songs or a collection of performances quite like this again. They are supported well by the musicians they gather around them, as well as each making their own vital and talented multi-instrumental contributions. So many highlights: Nowhere To Run, with Lane performing brilliantly - getting right under your skin; Annie - moving and emotional; Keep Me Turning - easily one of Pete Townshend's finest songs; April Fool, yet another lovely melody from Lane and sung so sweetly by him, you just wish there were many more verses; Street in the City, unusual and captivating, and a rare example of completely successful use of an orchestra in pop; Heart to Hang Onto, another fine Townshend song, where the acoustic guitar playing is so outstanding, you immediately want to hear it again and Townshend and Lane take vocal turns very effectively. Till The Rivers All Run Dry ends the original album tunefully and well. The bonus tracks are OK, and add dimension to a great little album, which now contains two pleasant instrumentals in this version of the original release. I hadn't heard Rough Mix for a very long time indeed, since selling my vinyl copy, and found it delightful and often brilliant, but equally humble and low-key. I have found myself replaying it over and over.

When I first bought this CD (October 2016) I was disappointed with it. I had always loved Ronnie Lane's work, but I was not so sure about Pete Townsend. No track seemed to stand out - it was just a noise. But I persevered, and after playing it a few times, I love it! It is definitely "a grower", and it has some fine guitar work as well.. And it has the advantage of including what I think is one of Ronnie's best tracks ever, "Annie". I am very pleased I bought it now!

A lovely bit of 70's trivia that I'm still enjoying.

I bought this to replace a tape I had of this Pete Townsend-Ronnie Lane album when it first came out, so it has history for me and the 4-stars are a given. Even so I think a lot of people would enjoy this Townsend-Lane collaboration, it's got a lot of good tunes on it. They're mostly simply done or acoustic-based and full of good vocals and musicianship. I bought the CD to hear Annie again, a stand-out Lane song that's beautiful and unforgettable, but several of the the Townsend songs would have been classics on any Who album (Keep Me Turning, Heart To Hang On To, Street In The City to name 3) and you get 3 bonus tracks that weren't include on the original to round it out. Another bonus for me was finally being able to read the sleeve notes in the booklet, which reveals the mix of guest-list backing musicians... Henry Spinetti, Clapton, Galagher and Lyle, Charlie Watts, Ian Stewart, Boz Burrell, John Entwistle.... Ahhh, it all becomes clear...

Great Album From Pete And Ronnie

A little gem of an album that at the time didn't set the album charts alight. This critically acclaimed recording is a collaboration of Pete Townshend from The Who and Ronnie Lane from The Small Faces and The Faces. Their song writing styles are different but combined on this album they certainly gel together to produce a simply stunning recording. Highly recommended

One of the best, a fantastic example of old school recording techniques.

Excellent Recording, one of the best (in my opinion) examples of how to record an Album. Why can't music be produced like that now???? I reckon it has to be one of Glyn Johns BEST works. I never get tired of listening to this album. Brilliant song writing from Pete Townsend, and Ronnie Lane, Who was Suffering (unknown to the others) with illness at the time. And great input from the likes of Clapton.
