'Guesstimate' is relatively new (and I don't like it much.) I can't really tell you that an AmE idiomatic phrase is better than 'rough estimate' here. Maybe you could say 'gave us this preliminary cost-estimate' or 'they approximated our costs as...' There is also something called 'a good faith estimate', used in real estate transactions.
