Rough Diamonds Bad Company
It took Bad Company three years to record the follow-up to 1979’s Desolation Angels . The rock marketplace had changed radically since the band’s inception in the early 1970s. Ironically, bands such as Boston and Foreigner were able to capitalize on the tight, energized, guitar-bred FM radio arena rock that Bad Company practically invented with tunes such as “Can’t Get Enough” and “Rock n’ Roll Fantasy.” Bad Company, on the other hand, were running low on new ideas. Rough Diamonds has its share of moments and the playing is never less than assured. “Electricland” features all the band’s trademarks from singer Paul Rodgers’ confident howl to Mick Ralphs’ strong guitar chops. “Painted Face” uses keyboards and guitars to modify the band’s hard rock for the then current pop marketplace. “Ballad of the Band” works out a notable Chuck Berry riff. “Nuthin’ On the TV” turns an obvious lament into a more obvious blues jam. “Kickdown” sounds like a nightclub jam. The original band would soon decide they had completed their mission. Other line-ups would ensure until a reunion years down the line.

Love this cd have the album from years ago as well

Bad Company at the end of the road--the first time. Look the singing and quality of musicianship is always quality with these guys, but the material was week. Their first two cd's were the best and Desolation is right up there with them. The other two Run & Burning are good and this one is okay--nothing more nothing less.

These tracks seem to explore the darker areas from the 'somewhere outside of Vegas cover art' of Desolation Angels.

Glad it’s in my Bad Co. original lineup collection, however, it’s not very good. Sounds lackluster...

Jewel case was cracked and in poor shape...liner notes were in good shape...CD was clean and scratch free...overall good for the price

Paul Rogers ... but not as we know it.

I confess a soft spot for this album that a friend taped for me when it came out. It jumped in a few places and I must have wiped it, but not before the music wormed its way into my long term memory. I bought the CD last week - that's about 30 years later - and realised that I still knew every note (except for the jumps!) No, it's not the debut album or Straight Shooter but those albums are still around to listen to, if that's what you really want. For me the songs on Rough Diamonds are strong, there are some great hooks and the production sounds great. There's very little of the 'eighties sound' to put me off and I much prefer it to the late seventies Bad Company albums which I've never been able to listen to. It's great to hear Paul Rogers' voice in a different context.

Die Luft war raus...sagen viele. Ich nicht ...

Sicher, der zum Teil schwere Blues-Rock der ersten beiden Platten dominiert hier nicht mehr. Der reinen Lehre mit Gitarre, Bass, Schlagzeug - und wenn es ganz progressiv werden soll: Klavier - wird nicht mehr gehuldigt. Man holt sich Bläsersätze dazu und experimentiert mit funkigen Grooves. Das alles steht der Band sehr gut zu Gesicht, finde ich, die Stimme von Paul Rodgers macht ebenso wie das geschmackvolle Spiel der anderen drei Musiker die Platte zu einem Genuss. Sie klingt halt etwas leichter, amerikanischer, das deutet auch das Cover schon an. Nicht jeder Song ist ein Geniestreich, gewisse Ermüdungserscheinungen mag es geben, aber für mich ist es ein sehr gutes Album.

eher glatt als rauh ...

rauh war einmal, die Diamanten sind eher "über"-poliert, aber ... Bad Company steht für Blues-Rock vom feinsten - technisch nach wie vor perfekt - aber die Ideen gehen langsam aus. Vieleicht wollte Paul Rodgers auch einfach zu viel - oder doch nur nochmal abkassieren? Egal - guter bis sehr guter Rock, mit Electric Land ist m.E. einer der besten Bad Co. Songs überhaupt enthalten. Kann man für kleines Geld bedenkenlos kaufen und vervollständigt die 5 Originals zur kompletten Sammlung (Nachzügler und späte Live-Aufnahmen lasse ich mal raus).
