I didn't Like or dislike this album , David Byron was still kind of stuck between being David Byron and being in heep at the time, I know that's not true because he had already been fired from the band by the time this album came out, it's not his best and it's not his worst, that's the only way I know how to put it

After being dismissed from Uriah Heep in June 1976, vocalist David Byron quickly rebounded by co-founding Rough Diamond with drummer Geoff Britton (Wings). Guitarist Clem Clempson and keyboardist Damon Butcher were brought aboard after they toured with The Steve Marriott All-Stars, while bassist Willie Bath earned the final roster spot after a number of auditions. Recorded from December 1976 though January 1977, the album was released in Spring 1977 with a push from Island Records that included radio ads in major markets and club dates which coincided with supporting Peter Frampton on his United States tour. The nine songs are highlighted by Byron's tale surrounding his break with UH ("Rock 'N' Roll) and a cool trifecta that snugly flows into nearly 14 minutes that cover a gamut of emotions; love lost and regained ("Hobo"), with an expressive musical interlude penned by Butcher ("The Link") that leads to the powerful finale, "End Of The Line": Talk is cheap, and words can be unkind / But a twisted tongue's your only friend at the end of the line. Byron seemingly opens a book on his life ("Lookin' For You", "Lock & Key", "Seasong", "By The Horn", "Scared") on the remaining cuts, which tears away at the rock star lifestyle made (in)famous from wild, racing demons on the road. Unfortunately, the band did not gain chart traction and in an era where album art was another key marketing tool - the cover looks like a rush-job by an intern on a hectic Friday afternoon. They called it a day after touring and Byron released a solo album one year later before forming The Byron Band. Though Rough Diamond quickly became a dusty footnote, the album continues to shine brightly due to its smart lyrics and impressive musicianship.
a pretty good solid release by veteran rock musicians and singer David Byron , sadly friction developed between members, or so i've read ...a second release would have solidified this lineup for some time to come ...thought i'd read that there had been a long 16 minute number on the original release... David Byron would go on to record with numerous lineups under the David Byron Band sad he died some time ago , rock lost a gifted singer
Super group,w/Ex-URIAH HEEP voc/HUMBLE PIE+COLOSSEUM+CHAMPION=JACK BRUCE BAND_w/Mahavishnus Billy Cobham& David Sancious*(keys+ gtr!!&-Baker Loo*(Clempsons 1st band=power trio<))also w/ex-Paul McCartneys "Wings" members,too.This is a very good & well excuted bluesrock/hard rock cd.If you enjoy Humble Pie/Uriah Heep et al.you'll enjoy this.There's a couple classic solos from Clempson,too.Also-Dave"Clem"Clempson-has a Newish(+ 1st!!-)solo cd out now,"In The Public Interest"+,COLOSSEUM-have their "last" studio cd:Time is on our Side" out now.the solo cd's bluesy rock+ Colosseums cd jazzy-blues-rock.both are great.esp Colosseums cd!<<
The music is awesome but the CD production is terrible. The entire CD sounds thin and hollow!!! They must have used a record as the source for the CD because track #5 By The Horn skips at the beginning of the song. I guess the record label: Sunrise Records couldn't get the original source tapes to use for this CD release? Too bad because the music rocks!!!
this was the best thing david did right after getting the boot from heep in late 1976, this was a very good hard rock album with some really great raw elements. i still feel this album was better then any of the solo albums byron did both before he was out of heep and after. this is great 70s hard rock here and david had the voice for that, this great german remastered cd makes these songs sound great and fresh all over again,. its hard to belive it has already been well over 40 years since this record was made, for a good 30 years i have had a japan import copy of the lp and now finally i got this great german import cd, again great classic hard rock, i would think any old heep fan from davids era in the band will love this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the only thing missing is the twirling keyboards and all heep always and still gives us to enhance there great sound. the guitar is a lot more raw and loud here. this was a classic way back in 1977 but was sadly very overlooked and by late that year with punk and all so popular rough dimaond disbanded, sad end to what could have become a great hard rock band had rough diamond stuck around!!!!!!!!!!!!

A rough or smooth gem...
We had to wait some time before we had this on Cd. But owing to Sunrise Records you are not dependent upon your old scratchy vinyl copy anymore. I bought it just recently myself, and with the exception of the three tunes included on the Byron double-Cd collection, I haven't heard it since the dark ages. More than a quarter of a century have passed since the Cd-boom occurred. This makes it different from the majority released in lets say 87-92. Now the Cd in itself must regarded as obsolete. Regarding the issue: the photos, liner notes, cover etc. are all similar to the LP. If this is a sign of authenticity or just inability to come up with something fresh is up to anyone to judge. There's not even a mentioning about remastering or so. So what about a sound improvement? Is it here to be found..? I'm not sure...So what has happened with the music during all these years? Some albums stay on the same level. Others deteriorate, or totally vanish. It comes as a surprise that R.D. has gone the other way. Upwards. I remember it as a decent piece of vinyl but perhaps uneven. Anyhow, my favorite song remains the same, the pulsating Lock and Key. For my money, it's the standout track on the album. I must admit that I'm highly surprised because of all reviews and articles I've read through the years no one have ever mentioned this gem. For me it's like talking 'bout Machine Head and leave out 'Smoke...Byrons vocal is at its finest here. For your eardrums like a vintage wine for the palate mixed with the odor of an exquisite Havana cigar. The lyrics may be open for debate but the words fit the song perfectly. Clempson's guitar travel with the rhythm section which goes on like steam train. The clavinet
