Rotten Sperm
Medical contribution by Paul Shin, M.D. , one of Shady Grove Fertilityâs Board Certified Urologist.
Fertility issues are often assumed to be the female partnerâs responsibility; however, only 40 percent of infertility is due to female factor. A more accurate break down is 40 percent female factor, 40 percent male factor, 10 percent combined, and 10 percent unknown. Sperm quantity and quality can be negatively affected by many different environmental and lifestyle factors. In a recent Romper article , the power of seminal fluid was discussed, as well as the question: can sperm go bad?
Sperm production and maturation is a dynamic, ongoing process for most men. Immature sperm originate from cells within the testis called germ cells and they go through a maturation process of approximately 2.5 months. As living cells within the testicle, they are subject to the same conditions and insults the rest of the body is trying to manage. Sperm health and reproductive potential are linked to good overall health, so the lifestyle choices that would benefit a manâs overall health dovetail nicely with good choices for his reproductive health as well.
The pathway for a sperm to find an egg is essentially a race through an obstacle course. At every step along the way there is an anatomic or functional hurdle that the sperm must overcome to continue the journey. From the point of ejaculation on the cervix to the final step of fertilizing an egg, only the strongest and luckiest sperm make it through. There is significant attrition of sperm along the way. Therefore, starting the race with as much sperm as possible is critical to achieving a successful pregnancy.
For most men with normal sperm counts, an everyday frequency of intercourse should not result in significantly lower numbers of ejaculated sperm. In some men, however, who have low sperm counts, spacing intercourse and ejaculation out every 2 to 3 days allows for better chances of achieving a pregnancy.
The effects of older paternal age on sperm and a manâs reproductive capacity are very active areas of current research. Men, like women, go through a reproductive and hormonal decline as they age, but this change is drawn out over many years. Even though new sperm are constantly manufactured, older paternal age seems to be associated with a longer time to conception as well as an increase in some neurocognitive disorders on the autism spectrum.
Does sperm go bad? In a word, no. Despite the added challenges in achieving pregnancy and the higher risk of autism spectrum disorders, most older fathers go on to achieve normal pregnancies in a timely manner. The central theme of earlier testing and urologic evaluation can improve a coupleâs chances of success.
A semen analysis is often often recommended to evaluate a manâs reproductive potential. The main parameters that are evaluated are the volume, concentration, pH (level of acidity), motility, progression, consistency, shape, total motile sperm count, and the presence other cells. At Shady Grove Fertility, we are proud to have our own board certified, fellowship trained reproductive urologists to help patients diagnose, treat, and ultimately overcome male factor infertility.

I am a 22-year-old college student, and for the past ten months, my semen has had a fishy odour, and sometimes it smells like rotten eggs. I believe it started after I had intercourse with a new partner.Â
I avoided all sexual encounters after that as I felt embarrassed. Also, it would be a massive turn-off for my partner, and if I had an infection, I didnât want to spread it further.
I went to 2 GPs and a Urologist who treated me for Trichomoniasis and Gonorrhea. Each time after the course of the antibiotic, the smell subsided for a week but then came back every time. The doctor asked me to get urine and semen cultures done, but they came back negative. My STD tests were also clear.
If I had no infection, what was causing the smell? It was gross; when I masturbated, my entire room would smell.Â
I felt disgusted. Hygiene sprays, scented soaps, expensive fragranced shower gels to help counter the smell, but nothing seemed to work. My sexual, mental, emotional health deteriorated because of this.Â
It was my final year in college, but I isolated myself from my friends.
I resorted to Dr. Google to help me figure out my condition. Upon searching, I decided on talking to a doctor online . So, I downloaded Your Doctors Online, as it had good ratings.Â
I was put in the waiting queue, as the doctors were busy. I got the impression that it was a busy app with a lot of traffic, which explained the excellent ratings.
After waiting for roughly 5 mins, Dr. Fatima Dar connected with me. She was polite and listened to my concerns patiently without brushing them off as unimportant.Â
She went on to ask about any other symptoms that I may have. I did not have any rashes/bumps, penile discharge, nor urinary complaints. Â
Dr. Fatima asked about my dietary habits in detail. All the things that I eat in a day and if my diet has changed in these past ten months.Â
I am supposed to graduate from college this year, so I hardly find time to eat healthy meals and resort to junk food, plus my coffee intake also tremendously increased.Â
I did not realize these things could have an impact on the smell of my semen. Dr. Dar began to explain how a diet rich in processed meat and garlic, excessive coffee or alcohol can cause the semen to have a pungent smell.Â
She further enlightened me that scented products and hygiene spray that I was using aggravated the problem and recommended I wash the genitals using plain warm water.Â
Upon further inquiry, I stated I was uncircumcised, so she explained how the buildup of smegma could also cause a foul odour that, along with a collection of sweat and urine, can further worsen the smell making it fishy or like rotten eggs.Â
I had to cut down on coffee, increase my water intake, and limit the consumption of processed food. The doctor told me how to carefully retract the foreskin and clean the area with only plain warm water after every visit to the toilet.Â
She recommended I wear loose cotton undergarments to avoid excessive sweating. She explained how an overall healthy lifestyle could improve sexual health.Â
I religiously followed the advice given by my doctor for two weeks as I was determined to get rid of the odour, and this resulted in a noticeable change. The smell was fading. I was adamant not to let this happen again and so adapted the lifestyle changes.Â
Now I am my confident self again. Who wouldâve thought something like this could have such a significant impact on your life and self-esteem? I am so glad I found Your Doctors Online and my doctor, who helped me through this journey which even the specialists couldnât do. I am now healthier and make better choices for myself- and the best choice I made was downloading Your Doctors Online.Â

A regular question I see by men on different forums is why does my semen smell so fishy even women ask these questions regular without any definitive answer.
In this post we will look at some of the possible cause for your semen smelling like rotten eggs or fish . Semen smell can be influenced by what we eat , prostate infections and STIs .
Semen usually have the smell of chlorine or bleach which it gets from the alkaloids and ammonia that is found in the 96% water content , any fishy smell mean something is wrong in your body.
We can influence the smell of semen by what we eat and drink . It is said that eating pineapples and other sweet fruits can make your cum smell and taste sweet . The opposite side side to the coin is that foods such diary , onion , garlic , dairy , asparagus , coffee and salmon . Read this article on how salmon caused fishy smelling penis .
They improve semen smell  juices (especially pineapple), pineapple, mango, celery, watermelon, melon, mint, cinnamon and kiwi. Drink plenty of water
Make semen smell worse:Â Coffee, alcohol, cigarette, drugs, dairy, broccoli, asparagus, fatty meats, garlic, onion, spicy.
It is a sexually transmitted disease that affects the genital organs and causes flow of bad smell that can smell like rotten fish and pain with sexual intercourse. However, its actual frequency is unknown, since its treatment is so simple that most cases are not reported. These infections are caused by a parasite of the group of protozoan parasites, called Trichomona vaginalis, known simply as trichomonas.
Semen with a high concentration of zinc usually neutralizes this parasite. For this reason, almost all infected males have no symptoms or discomfort; and male eliminates the trichomonas without need of a treatment. Consequently, the man usually does not realize that he is infected and, unknowingly, can transmit the infection to a healthy woman. Each synthesized drug has a toxic effect, which is manifested under the influence of various factors. Alcoholic beverages are considered one of the main provoking factors. During the joint intake of alcohol and Viagra, the likelihood of side effects increases significantly. In addition to exacerbating the side effects, alcohol has a toxic effect on the entire body.
In men with low zinc levels, symptoms such as discharge in urine, burning during urination, or burning may occur immediately after urination. On very particular occasions, the parasite may advance to the internal organs and provoke prostatitis and inflammation of the testis ducts (epididymitis).
Approximately 1 in every 200 thousand people in the world present trimethylaminuria , reason why it is considered rare disease ; however, the fact that few are affected has caused many doctors to ignore it and even prevent its diagnosis by considering that the patient requires only a good kind of personal hygiene to overcome it.
This metabolic disorder can occur in both men and women and is characterized by an unpleasant body odor resembling rotten fish, whose origin is in trimethylamine (TMA). This compound is formed in the intestine by bacterial degradation of various diet products containing choline , a nutrient found in fish, eggs, liver and legumes. A man that has trimethylamine would smell fishy odor in their sweat, urine, semen and breath . The concentration of choline in normal semen is between 0.9 â 1.4 mg/ml higher than this can be an indication that you have  trimethylamine.
Smelly semen that smells like pus or fish may be a sign of prostate problems .
Only men have prostate gland and is a smooth surface gland that is part of the male reproductive system and is usually the size of a walnut, although this size may vary over time. In many men the size of the prostate can increase especially in the 40 or 50 years.
The prostate is located under the bladder and surrounds the urethral duct. With the help of hormones secretes a milky discharge that mixes with the spermatozoa during ejaculation. It is believed to produce approximately 10 percent of the seminal fluid.
The prostate can suffer different disorders, the most frequent being the increase in size, to become infected or to undergo a tumor process. Thus, the two main disorders are:
The causes of prostatitis are diverse and depend on the type of pathogen that has caused inflammation of the prostate. These may be of bacterial or non-bacterial origin.
Symptoms may differ between whether prostatitis is caused by a bacterial origin or by a non-bacterial origin. But both share the behaviors of:
Prostatitis can also cause fever and chills.
In chronic bacterial prostatitis there may also be other symptoms such as:
If you see any of the above symptoms along with the fishy smell from your semen see a doctor immediately .
