Rose Washington, who is the first African-American woman to become a member of Congress, was born in New York City to a family of slaves. She received a bachelor's degree in social work from Boston University, then went to graduate school. In 1989, she was elected as the first black woman mayor of Washington, D.C., and in 1990 became the first woman to be elected to Congress. Rose Washington died in 2012 at the age of 81.
