According to statistics that probably matter , there is more content on Pornhub Premium than there is on
Netflix
. And while Netflix is beating Pornhub Premium in subscribers, Pornhub Premium has had over 5 million signups since its inception in 2015, watching over 200,000 videos, with 8,000 being added each month. Netflix adds a handful of movies and shows each month and comparing Pornhub Premium to Netflix is a futile and stupid gesture.
Comparing the two platforms isn't really the point of this. The point is that porn, on whatever website or service that is offering it online, is like the mighty redwood, standing tall in a forest of tiny pine trees. I don't even know if those two trees grow side by side, but for the sake of argument, this forest is magical, so relax.
Porn has had a rocky path in its growth history, but as we enter the meaty portion of the age of content it should be important to note that porn is the one streaming service that will outlast them all.
There are always some downsides to stating the obvious. The first being that those whom you are stating it to refuse to accept the inevitability or truth of the statement because it generally requires some sort of self-reflection, or reconciliation with their own feelings. The second downside to stating the obvious is that your statement will be immediately accepted and everything else you have to say may as well be a gentle buzzing that eventually fades into nothing.
With
YouTube
thinking it's a television provider ,
Apple
launching its Channels and TV+ service, Netflix tacking on a slight price increase , Disney+ finally teasing us with a launch date ,
T-Mobile
adding a streaming service and all the other crap we already are acutely aware of, it seems that all we have time for in life is consuming content. By that logic, the thought of consuming porn content on top of all the non-porn content we consume should feel like a daunting task, but it's not. It's easy, generally free and because of its construction, quickly and efficiently delivered. Plus, when it comes to paying for a streaming service, it was here first.
"From the beginning, adult entertainment has pioneered the content subscription model with pay-sites and are innovators in terms of supporting new models like the traffic generation tube sites. While mainstream content providers play catch up and adopt subscription models for fear of missing out," says a chipper YouPorn representative. "Today at YouPorn, we take pride in offering our users a wide variety of content. Not only do we host an extensive selection of engaging multimedia, we’ve worked hard to bring our community of billions other means of joy and pleasure designed for all devices. By providing fun and valuable content on YouPorn’s World Blog and sharing insights that benefit users like monthly sex horoscopes at yoursexzodiac.com , our streaming services continue to exceed the depths of other offerings."
While a sex zodiac probably isn't the thing that turns a Hulu customer into a paying YouPorn customer, that doesn't have to be the conflicting situation here. There is no conflict. Both exist side by side, even if most of us would be afraid to admit it. You at least spend as much time on porn sites daily as you do trying to choose a movie on Netflix. YouPorn recently launched a standalone app , which doesn't change any paradigms, but allows me to use the word paradigm in a sentence, something I haven't done since the late 1990s.
Pornhub and YouPorn and RedTube and xHamster and all the other sites out there are not the same thing as your Netflix or Hulu or
Amazon
Prime or Apple TV+ or SlingTV or all the other streaming movie and TV sites out there, but they are also the exact same thing. They are companies that provides content for us to consume at a level before unheard of and without fathomable reason. Did you think, back in 1994 as you were downloading a pornographic .gif file pixel by pixel while watching cable TV out of the corner of your eye that this is where we would be? Streaming porn on our phones while we scroll through Netflix looking for a movie that wasn't released in 1998?
We are at content overload. We are willingly acting out the most disturbing scenes from A Clockwork Orange , our eyes wide open to the sheer volume of content that is available and being made available for our consumption. As streaming services reach critical mass and we enter a phase in which we're just paying for cable again, porn calmly continues existing, growing in form, content and function, while we scramble to budget the three streaming services we can afford and lament the rest. Then watch a bunch of porn.
Because streaming is not limited to our couches anymore. There is a television in every room, because it's in our pocket. And porn has quickly adapted and will always be there. In 2018 YouPorn users predominately watched porn from their mobile devices, which accounted for 60% of overall traffic by device. Desktop traffic made up for 28% of overall traffic and then tablets, the least used device, made up 11% of traffic. It's certainly easier to watch porn on your phone than some foreign language thriller whose lighting pallet can only be described as shadow in a dark alley drenched in motor oil .
Porn has always been here and has paved the way for modern streaming services and will always focus on innovation and forward momentum , while the mainstream streaming services will continue to flood the market with content and just chip away at each other, fighting for scraps of business that justify their massive production budgets.
Eventually Netflix will face a reckoning over the quality of its original content. Eventually we'll have consumed all the cancelled TV shows on Hulu. Eventually we'll realize re-watching Disney movies has a fetid staleness to it we cannot explain. Eventually, we'll realize that it's all just a bit too much.
But not porn. Never porn. The commitment will always be less stressful, the content will always be fresh (unless you prefer to watch porn from the same era as Mash , which is all you, buddy) and the technology will always be adaptable and functional. After all the rest of the streaming services are eventually consolidated into one, massive subscription service, porn will still be humming along — defining industries like VR and AR and just being that soft landing that we all need after a day of falling through content.

Most of us are watching porn, whether or not we admit it. But aren't you tired of (or maybe even troubled by) just doing the same old thing to get off online over and over again?
If you're wondering why you've become so bored by the widely accessible mainstream porn that just seems to keep doing more of the same, Pornhub and its parent company MindGeek deserves part of the blame. As does Xvideos, the most-viewed porn site, which is owned by WGCZ. But don't worry, there are porn and erotica alternatives that can upgrade your self-love sessions.
For years now, MindGeek has been accused of monopolistic dominance in the porn industry. In addition to Pornhub, it owns RedTube, YouPorn, Xtube, Brazzers, Reality Kings, and many more. MindGeek disputes that characterization, with representative Michael Willis pointing to viewership data that shows its sites aren't alone among the most popular porn sites (it owns three in the top 10 and seven in the top 100). Still, MindGeek has a vast amount of power and influence over porn industry actors and producers. Its biggest competitor, WGCZ, keeps a low-profile and camouflages its network of brands (contact information for WGCZ wasn't immediately available).
"We don’t dispute that MindGeek properties drive considerable traffic, but to say it drives a disproportionate volume of traffic is not accurate," Willis said over email in March.
Take that as you will. Monopolies are, of course, bad for consumers, workers, and antithetical to healthy competition. Just look at the hullabaloo on Capitol Hill over Big Tech.
Free porn sites (aka "tube" sites) often rely on profiting off of widespread piracy , making it near impossible for performers to earn a living. MindGeek spends nearly $2 million to combat piracy, according to TechCrunch , "though that would amount to less than half a percent of the company’s 2015 revenue ." Blake White, Pornhub's vice president, added in an emailed statement that the site removes copies of videos that have been fingerprinted — a free service that acts as a digital watermark — and works to remove pirated content featuring its partners from other tube sites.
Accusations of monopoly and piracy aside, MindGeek, Pornhub, and Xvideos are, to varying degrees, linked to extremely troubling allegations.
Most recently, a New York Times story added more accusations of these websites hosting unethical videos linked to child pornography, revenge porn, rape, and other forms of abuse. The op-ed led Mastercard and Visa to stop processing payments on Pornhub, and the company also purged videos from unverified accounts . While a monumental, long-overdue step forward in addressing these longstanding issues, it's important to consider the implications for sex workers as well. The Times piece has also been criticized for promoting an anti-porn religious group that seeks to outlaw sex work, rather than advocating for the protection of such a vulnerable population.
In a statement provided to the Times , Pornhub responded to the allegations by stating that it, "is unequivocally committed to combating child sexual abuse material, and has instituted a comprehensive, industry-leading trust and safety policy to identify and eradicate illegal material from our community," and that assertions of Pornhub allowing child pornography on the site “is irresponsible and flagrantly untrue.”
Back in January 2020, a judge awarded $13 million to 22 women who accused porn producer Girls Do Porn — one of Pornhub's former official content partners used to sell users on purchasing a subscription — of tricking and coercing them into performing. Despite the lawsuit's allegations being filed back in 2016, Pornhub only took down Girls Do Porn's channel in October 2019 , waiting until after federal prosecutors charged Girls Do Porn owners and employees with sex trafficking. It led many to question whether Pornhub cared at all about the fact that it profited from abusive and criminal videos. As of this week, searching for Girls Do Porn on Xvideos turns up no results.
Separately, in 2018, adult performer Nikki Benz sued MindGeek for sexual battery. (Los Angeles prosecutors declined to press criminal charges. ) MindGeek's Willis wouldn't comment on the lawsuit.
Ethical porn, which focuses on performers' rights, consent, and safety, has become an increasingly discussed issue in the industry. Unfortunately, there's really no such thing as guaranteed ethical free porn in the way that tube sites provide it.
Aside from most perpetuating the same problems described above, there's also little industry transparency, accountability, or credible information available. It's basically industry whistleblowers feeling as though they sacrifice their careers to speak up or journalists shedding light on abuses like those alleged against Girls Do Porn.
Yet the reality is free porn isn't going anywhere (for now), and some tube sites can be more ethical than others. New business models are emerging that provide free clips with the explicit permission of performers and creators.
Trying out alternatives to Pornhub and Xvideos is about so much more than just ethics, though. There are whole worlds of unique NC-17 content just waiting to be explored, perfect for both aficionados and newcomers. There are sites with artsy high productions, the down and dirty kinky, genuine amateurs, personalized experiences with stars, and an underrated category of erotica that isn't just video porn.
The gist: Categorizing itself as a feminist porn site, Bellesa provides ethical free porn through a partnership program, with curated and relatively lengthy (typically at least 10 minutes long) free clips directly from the creators. That includes videos from their own in-house studio too, Bellesa Films, which you can pay to see in full . There's also user-submitted erotica, articles on sexual health, and a built-in sex toy shop.
Best for: Beginners or those with more softcore, women-friendly, sex-positive tastes that are on a budget and don't like to waste too much time searching getting off.
Ethics: While initially criticized for perpetuating the pirated porn issues, its partnership program introduced a viable model for ethical free porn to the industry.
The gist: This performer-oriented platform is all about creating a space where free porn helps instead of hurts content creators. With a format that spotlights performers who are usually just starting out and trying to make a name for themselves, it includes only the free clips they offer, from interviews to previews to full videos.
Best for: Ethically-minded budgeters who put favorite performers above preferences for a specific category or type of content.
Ethics: Innovating one of the most viable ethical free porn models ever, MVTube not only serves as a promotional tool for newcomers to build a loyal following, but also provides 67 cents for every 1,000 views. To boot, it includes inclusive categories that are much more queer-friendly than your typical tube site.
The gist: An unexpected haven of ethical and free communal horniness, the "front page of the internet" has an abundance of thriving porn subreddits. Amateur lovers rejoice, because there's something for absolutely everyone in r/realgirls , r/girlsinlove , r/girlsgonewild , r/gonewild , and r/gonewildtrans . These aren't places of exploitation, but communities that celebrate exploration, both from the uploader and receiver's perspective. If the loss of NC-17 Tumblr has left you feeling without a welcoming horny internet community to call home, then you're in luck.
Best for : The kind of grounded, home video, guilt-free stuff that somehow leaves you feeling like maybe this whole porn thing can actually be a net positive for society. It's also perfect for voyeurs and those with an exhibitionist kink.
Ethics : If you know Reddit, you know the best moderators tend to take their rules seriously. In each of these subreddits, the identity and age of every submission is thoroughly vetted and then protected to ensure the content isn't being uploaded maliciously. Reddit's rules strictly forbid involuntary pornography and sexually suggestive content involving a minor. Piracy is pretty much a non-issue since professionals are forbidden from posting. Realness is valued above all else, so you get much less of the manicured misogynistic bullshit of regular porn. On top of all that, encouraging comments are the norm, while mean-spiritedness and hate speech is either strongly discouraged or flat out banned.
The gist: Calling itself an "independent tube site," xHamster is a hugely popular and big library (over 10,000 pages and counting) focused on authentic amateur content uploaded by users from within its community.
Best for : Those who absolutely cannot do without the tube site experience, but are looking for a lesser of two evils.
Ethics and inclusivity : This one was on the line for us, but ultimately xHamster's efforts to take a stand on controversial issues pushed it over the edge. Like all tube sites, xHamster can be a home for non-consensual porn, and survivors have expressed how difficult it is to get them removed. Far from immune to piracy, an xHamster spokesperson pointed to the site's public-facing form for copyright allegations and its commitment to taking down illegally uploaded content through AI and machine-learning algorithms. (To be fair to Pornhub, its fingerprinting system seems much more sophisticated.) xHamster was also caught up in the Girls Do Porn controversy. It disabled its Girls Do Porn channel and began actively taking down the company's videos in August as well as built an algorithm to spot common search terms related to the videos. But copies with purposefully evasive titles still fall through the cracks. Whenever Girls Do Porn is searched on the site now, xHamster warns users about the studio's exploitations and urges viewers to report any of its videos. But all this just shows how near impossible it is to be an ethical free tube site in the traditional sense, even for those making the effort. Overall though, xHamster is more vocal about advocating for diversity and inclusivity than others. It once blocked North Carolina users to protest an anti-trans bathroom bill . Last year it banned searches for a celebrity's leaked nude photos and scolded users searching for R. Kelly's infamous videos with a minor.
The gist: BDSM is one of the most misunderstood and maligned genres of porn, often used as evidence for why it's inherently misogynistic and bad for society. But Kink.com proves quite the contrary, consistently regarded as one of the most ethical names in porn while providing a seemingly endless library for every type of perversion.
Cost: $15-$39.99 a month depending on subscription plan
Best for: Lovers of hardcore BDSM porn who want to ensure their performers are being treated ethically.
Ethics: First of all, consent is absolutely key to any healthy BDSM experience, and Kink.com embedded that into its mission . While sadly the in-house studio shut down back in 2017 , it continues to ensure the safety and well-being of every performer by requiring all studios follow their strict Kink Consent Protocols . Performers fill out a comprehensive checklist of what they consent to, which is enforced throughout shooting with check-ins
