When card collectors ask me for the best cards to invest in, I always say ‘look for scarcity’ with the GOATs.
Sure, modern card collectors will flock to the rookies of Kobe Bryant or Tom Brady , but, personally, I like the OLD stuff.
It’s the old, vintage cards of guys like Babe Ruth, produced in shorter supplies, often left for dead, that I believe have the best chance of long-term investment potential.
I’ve covered some of the more affordable Babe Ruth cards in the past, but in this piece, I wanted to focus on the rookie card of Babe Ruth.
I should note, Babe has both a pre-rookie and what is considered a TRUE rookie card , both of which I’ll cover in this article.
Babe Ruth has two baseball cards that are considered to be his 'rookie cards'.
The first is the 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth card, which is technically considered a pre-rookie card of Babe Ruth.
A pre-rookie card is a card that was issued before a player arrived in the major leagues. In most instances, the card features a player in a minor-league or college uniform.
Today, many card manufacturers release players’ cards before even being drafted, showing the player in their college uniforms (modern Leaf Football is a good example). These would also be considered pre-rookie cards.
The Baltimore News Babe Ruth is Ruth's "pre-rookie" card, representing the first baseball card of Babe Ruth; however, it was released when Ruth was a member of the minor league Baltimore Orioles team.
The back of the card even has a schedule for the Baltimore Orioles games.
Babe Ruth's Sporting News (M101-4 and M101-5) cards from 1916 are his accepted rookie cards.
The cards feature Ruth in a pitching pose with the Boston Red Sox before getting shipped to the rival New York Yankees.
Note that this is one of only several other baseball cards that features Babe Ruth in a Boston Red Sox uniform.
M101 Sporting News cards were offered to readers of The Sporting News newspaper, one of the most popular sports-related newspapers of the time.
While the M101 set is known as “The Sporting News set”, the cards were issued by more than a dozen companies , sold exclusively through The Sporting News.
There are two different M101 sets, M101-4 and M101-5, and Babe Ruth has a card in each set, both identical and with the same number - #151.
It can be pretty tough to tell the difference between M101-4 and M101-5 Ruth's.
"Some of the company ads only appear on card backs in one of the sets. The Sporting News, for example, is only found on backs of the M101-4 cards. Therefore, if one of the 30 singles with the same card number in both sets possesses a Sporting News back, it is clearly an M101-4 card. However, if the backs are blank, there really isn't any way of differentiating those"

Both Babe Ruth's pre-rookie (Baltimore News) and rookie card (Sporting News) are among the hobby's most valuable baseball cards .
Babe Ruth's Sporting News rookie card continues to break records at auction.
I estimate that even lower grade copies approaching Very Good (PSA 3) condition would earn near $500K at auction.
Recent sales of the M101 Babe Ruth card in higher grades have recently sold for over $1 Million, including a PSA 6 sold at auction in mid-2021 for $1.45 Million .
Ruth's Baltimore News pre-rookie card is worth MORE than his Sporting News rookie card , primarily due to the significant difference in scarcity.
In comparing the population reports of Ruth's M101 Sporting News and Baltimore News cards, there is one clear conclusion - Ruth's Baltimore news pre-rookie card is much rarer.
Note this doesn't include SGC Pop Reports; however, I would call the 1914 Baltimore News Ruth RARE and the Sporting News Ruth SCARCE.
Note that the Baltimore News Ruth is even rarer than the T206 Honus Wagner card .
Both the Baltimore News Babe Ruth and M101 Sporting News Babe Ruth baseball cards are among the hobby's most counterfeited. So, be on the lookout.
I get a lot of inquiries from collectors asking me to authenticate M101 Ruth's that are clearly faked.
eBay is littered with these reprints.
So, my advice, which I tell everyone - if it's too good to be true, it most definitely is, especially when it comes down to the most valuable cards in the hobby.
Here's a clear reprint. If you can't tell this one is fake, please check out our guide on authenticating cards . These often come with a fake Ruth auto on the back.
Here's another aged reprint, but this one is also easy to identify because the text is the wrong color. Ultimately if you had this one under a black light, the paper would likely fluoresce due to the newer paper used for the reprint.
Babe Ruth rookie cards are, unfortunately, way out of reach for most collectors. For the Baltimore News Ruth pre-rookie card, sales are rare and typically only happen via private sales or high-end vintage sports card auctions .
Sporting News Ruth rookie cards occasionally come up for sale, but ultimately only at auction and usually starting in the low six figures.
For anyone looking for a Babe Ruth card, I'd recommend either considering one of Ruth's 1933 Goudey cards or even considering one of his many strip cards , which remain among the most affordable Ruth cards on the market.

NEW YORK (AP) — At the very first Old-Timers' Day at Yankee Stadium, on the final day of the 1947 season, 22-year-old rookie Bobby Brown watched wide-eyed from the dugout.
Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb were on the field. Joe DiMaggio wasn't a face on a ballpark monument then -- he was a teammate.
All of a sudden, the festivities took a dark turn. Hall of Famer Home Run Baker tried to beat out a bunt and collapsed near first base.
Brown was the only one in the surrounding area with any medical training. Quickly summoned to tend to the 61-year-old Baker, Brown rushed out and dispensed his best advice.
"I told him, 'Get up, get up!'" Brown recalled a few years ago. "I guess it worked."
Worked out pretty well, too, for Brown, one of baseball's most distinguished major leaguers on and off the field.
Five-time champion with the New York Yankees . Highest World Series batting average of anyone with at least 35 plate appearances. Veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Prominent cardiologist. American League president.
Brown died at 96 on Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas, the Yankees said. They said he was last remaining person to play for the team in the 1940s.
The Yankees mourn the passing of Dr. Bobby Brown— a member of 5 Yankees championship teams, WWII & Korean War veteran, President of the American League from 1984-94, practicing cardiologist & fan favorite at Old Timers' Day. We send our condolences to his family & loved ones. pic.twitter.com/iw8rPfyxeM
"Few people who have worn the pinstripes have lived such an accomplished, fulfilled, and wide-ranging life as Dr. Brown, who was beloved by our organization for his warmth, kindness and character," Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said in a statement.
Brown played with the Yankees from 1947-54, with Yogi Berra his roommate. Overall, the third baseman batted .279 with 22 home runs and 237 RBIs. Known as a terrific contact hitter, Brown struck out just 88 times in 1,863 plate appearances.
In the World Series, Brown became a Bronx bruiser.
Just two days after that Old-Timers' Day episode in 1947, Brown made his debut in the Fall Classic as a pinch-hitter, drawing a bases-loaded walk against Brooklyn. Brown went 3 for 3 in that matchup, including a big, pinch-hit RBI double in a Game 7 win.
Brown hit .439 (18 for 41) with five doubles, three triples and nine RBIs in 17 World Series games, with a .500 on-base percentage.
Born on Oct. 25, 1924, in Seattle, Brown went to the same San Francisco high school as DiMaggio. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served stateside, and signed with the Yankees in 1946.
Brown continued his military service when he was called up by the Army medical corps in the middle of the 1952 season — when New York won another crown — and was overseas during the Korean War for 19 months. He played in 28 games for the Yankees in May and June 1954 before retiring from baseball.
After his playing days, Brown became a longtime practicing cardiologist in Fort Worth. In 1974, he served as president of the Texas Rangers for part of the season.
"Dr. Brown was not only a great baseball player, but a great gentleman and a great patriot. We were fortunate to know him, to work with him, and to call him our friend," said former President George W. Bush, who once owned the Rangers.
Brown was president of the American League from 1984-94, when he also was on the board of directors for the Hall of Fame.
Commissioner Rob Manfred called him a "proud Yankee" and "quiet star."
"Dr. Bobby Brown led an extraordinary life, which included great accomplishments on the baseball field and as a leader and executive in our game," he said in a statement.
Former commissioner Bud Selig praised Brown's "extraordinary baseball life, both on and off the field," adding, "he was of great help to me both during my years as a club owner and then as baseball commissioner."
"Obviously a sad day and a kind of giant in our sport. Did a lot of different, special things in our game," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.
Brown, who played at Tulane and graduated from its medical school, continued to motivate in all fields in recent times. He spoke last year with Mark Hamilton, a former Tulane star who went on to play for the St. Louis Cardinals and graduated from medical school this past spring.
"Dr. Brown was my childhood inspiration to play Major League Baseball and then enter medicine; the example that my dad provided to show me the two were not mutually exclusive." Hamilton said in an email to The Associated Press.
Brown is survived by his son, Dr. Pete Brown, daughters, Beverley Dale and Kaydee Bailey, 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Brown's wife of more than 60 years, Sara, died in 2012.
The Browns made a striking couple for decades. During his final Old-Timers' Day visit in 2019, Brown recalled their dating days and remembered giving his future wife advice on how she should describe him to her parents.
"Tell your mother that I'm in medical school, studying to be a cardiologist," he said. "Tell your dad that I play third base for the Yankees."

MLB's top four 2022 prospects are already making their mark in the major leagues, and their rookie cards are following suit on the sports collectibles market.
Last year at this time, Wander Franco was all the rave for MLB prospectors.
The Tampa Bay Rays shortstop was the clearcut top-ranked prospect, and when he got called up to the big leagues in June, he didn’t disappoint.
Now that Franco has graduated from prospects lists, collectors have already shifted their attention to the next big thing.
This year’s prospects list is filled with eye-popping talent. But it’s the top three guys that are stealing all the headlines, and for justifiable reason.
“You’ve got some big names, kind of similar to last year’s guys, with Adley Rutschman and Julio Rodriguez and Bobby Witt Jr.,” said prospects guru and Onyx Authenticated, Inc. President Lance Fischer. “To me, those three really stand out and then you drop a little bit, I think, off from the talent level. I still like Spencer Torkelson. I think those top three, they’re definitely going to be difference makers when they get to the big leagues.”
MLB Pipeline/MLB.com senior writer Jim Callis really loves the top three prospects as well.
“I think it’s a really deep group at the top,” Callis said. “There aren’t too many years where you legitimately have three guys who would easily be the number one prospect in a lot of years. You could even stretch that a little bit past three maybe, if you wanted.”
Well, let’s stick with the top three right now, because they all seem to be primed for standout careers.
In mid-March, MLB Pipeline released its updated Top 100 prospects list, and Witt was ranked No. 1. The Kansas City Royals shortstop, son of former MLB pitcher Bobby Witt, was the seventh-rated player at the beginning of 2021. The 21-year-old jumped to the top after a solid campaign in Double-A and Triple-A last year, when he combined for 33 home runs, 97 RBIs and a .290 average, .361 on-base percentage and .575 slugging percentage (.290/.361/.575).
Kansas City Royals rookie Bobby Witt Jr. takes a swing during spring training in 2021.
“He’s a potential 30-30 shortstop with just makeup and charisma off the charts,” Callis said. “He grew up around the game, and I think the transition is going to be really easy for him. … I’ve been covering this stuff for almost 34-35 years now and of all the shortstops that have come out of the draft in that time, the best tools of anybody was A-Rod. A-Rod’s probably the best draft prospect since I’ve covered it, and the second-best shortstop tools are Bobby Witt Jr. He’s that good.”
MLB Pipeline ranks Rutschman, a catcher for the Baltimore Orioles, as its second-best prospect. An experienced 24-year-old, Rutschman put up 23 home runs, 75 RBI and .285/.397/.502 over two levels last season.
Baltimore Orioles prospect Adley Rutschman behind the plate in the MLB Futures Game in 2021.
“Adley probably has the best catching tools to come out in the draft since I’ve covered it,” Callis said. “You’ve got a track record and you’ve got tools, and it’s offense and defense. Again, it’s great makeup. This will sound like hyperbole, but I’ve got a comp I keep going back to — when he was coming out of the draft, somebody compared him to Mark Teixeira, who was a Gold Glove catcher. That’s what you’re looking at potentially with Rutschman.”
No. 3 on MLB Pipeline’s list is Rodriguez, an outfielder for the Seattle Mariners. The 21-year-old had a phenomenal 2021 season. Between High-A and Double-A, Rodriguez was an on-base machine at .347/.441/.560. He had 13 home runs, 47 RBIs, 64 runs scored and stole 21 bases.

“You’ve got Julio Rodriguez, who didn’t come through the draft and probably has a higher offensive ceiling than either [Witt or Rutschman],” Callis said. “I think he’s a better pure hitter than Bobby Witt Jr. The power in those three games is comparable, but I’ll bet you Julio Rodriguez probably hits more home runs than they do, just because I think there’s a little more swing and miss with Bobby Witt Jr. and Rutschman’s a catcher and that’s going to take a toll on him a little bit physically.
“The negative, if you will, of Rodriguez compared to those guys is they both play premium positions and he’s more of a right fielder.”
Coming in at No. 4 in the rankings is Detroit Tigers first baseman/third baseman Spencer Torkelson. The top overall draft pick in the 2020 MLB Draft started the 2021 season in High-A and finished in Triple-A, which says a lot about his progress. The 22-year-old hit 30 home runs and drove in 91 runs. His breakdown is .267/.383/.552.
Card prices for these top four prospects have been through the roof for quite some time. All the guys have Bowman Chrome autographed rookies as their premiere rookie cards.
In late March, Witt’s highest-selling card was a 2020 Bowman Chrome Prospects Gold Refractor Autograph (/50, PSA 10) that went for $67,500 as a best offer on eBay. The card had a population of six. His
