After serving in the U.S. Army, during the Korean War, Don Romeo took a job with the Paul Moore Agency in Omaha, NE. After two years, Don purchased the company and formed the Don Romeo Agency.
“He was a pioneer in the fair business, but what people need to realize is Don Romeo was really all about show business, period,” Say Paul Moore, former co-head of the Nashville William Morris Agency. “He booked as many clubs, ballrooms, and other venues, such as Ak-Sar-Ben (in Omaha), as he did fairs.”
According to Moore, Don Romeo and late Sidney Epstein, from the William Morris office in Chicago, started the concept of bringing national acts to state fairs. Don and Sidney’s forward thinking helped create the modern-day fair industry as we know it. As a fair talent buyer, Romeo worked with acts ranging from Lassie and the Three Stooges, to the Rolling Stones and nearly every country act that ever played.
Charlie Daniels said that “Mr. Romeo exemplified what’s good about the music business, with honor, integrity, and by really caring about the people he worked with.”
Don retired in 1989 and sold the company to his son, Bob Romeo. Bob says that his father died “with a smile on his face,” with his family by his side in 2001. “My father collected stories and [had] the ability to tell them to people to help them and educate them, just to make them laugh.”
In 2007, Bob partnered with his sister Fran Romeo, and together they built the company to the success it is today. Fran says “I was very blessed to have a father that was so respected in the music industry. He was not only my father but my mentor.”
