Rome and the Roman Empire

Rome and the Roman empire were the first Roman imperial state. Rome was founded in 753 BC by Romulus and his twin brother Remus, the sons of the god Mars, on the site of a former Etruscan city, and was the first city in the world to combine a monarchy and republic. After an initial period of civil war, Rome became a republic under its first two kings, Romulus and Remus. The republican government of Rome lasted until the reign of Julius Caesar.
By the time of the first Christian church, in the 4th century, the capital had already been built on the site of its original incarnation, which had stood for almost a thousand years before it was destroyed by the Romans in AD 278. The site was reclaimed by the city later that century, but the rebuilding took place in such haste that the original site is entirely lost to us.
