The rock and roll genre has celebrated a long and illustrious prominence in not only American culture but in music scenes around the world, but nothing was quite like the Classic Rock phase which includes music produced between 1960 and 1989 by artists that defined then later defied rock and roll, bringing with them a new culture of anti-establishmentarianism and punk rock.

Some of these great artists first gained fame as members of bands while a few started and stayed on their own in the genre, but all share an extraordinary degree of success in a genre that is dominated by groups .

Still, a number of solo artists managed to sustain illustrious careers with huge followings. The following list of the top 20 classic rock solo artists was compiled based on longevity of the performers, album sales, radio airplay, and their musical influence. Explore this list then read on to discover a bit more background on a few of the artists featured in it.

The following presents the best of rock and roll's solo artists that emerged between the 1960s and the early 1990s, qualifying their work as classic rock. Here are the top 20 classic rock solo artists:

Paul McCartney claimed the title of the top classic rock solo artist because of his huge commercial success not only as a solo artist but as a member of the Beatles, and the "Guinness Book of World Records" named him as the most successful composer of the 20th Century. Fellow Beatles members John Lennon (3) and George Harrison (6) also enjoyed great success as solo artists.

Perhaps the most prolific songwriter on the list, Elton John ranks at number two in terms of longevity and album sales with over 35 years, 43 albums and 200-million albums sold throughout his career. Be sure to check out his compilation album " Greatest Hits 1970-2002" to get a feel of what this great musician can really do!

Eric Clapton's command of the guitar is legendary, and his role in groundbreaking groups like Cream , The Yardbirds, and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers has made him the only person to earn three inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, earning him the number 5 spot while Faces frontman Rod Stewart claimed the seventh slot on the list.

At number 8, Bob Dylan is regarded as one of the most influential songwriters of the rock generation, especially for his work on the album " Blonde On Blonde," whose tracks have been covered by innumerable artists over the years.

The last two members of the top 10 both died at 27. Jimi Hendrix claimed the ninth slot for his incredible electric guitar skills, though his career was cut short by his untimely death while Janis Joplin , whose powerful, raspy voice and explosive style was different from any other female rock artist’s also resulted in her death from a drug overdose at age 27.

After a successful career with Genesis, our number 11 top classic rock artist Phil Collins carved out an equally successful solo career and has been at the forefront of promoting the digital delivery of music as well as composing tracks for famous films like Disney's "Tarzan."

Alice Cooper, at number 12, was influenced musically by the British Invasion in the ‘60s, but added his own unique live performance antics, costumes, and makeup, creating the Shock Rock genre in the process while number 14 Eddie Money originally set out to become a police officer but ended up a rock star after his debut 1977 album earned great chart success.

The "tough girl" of rock and roll, Pat Benatar , claimed the 13th spot on the list for her rough persona and opera-trained voice, which resulted in her winning Grammys for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for four consecutive years.

Both Robert Plant, who defined the musical style of Led Zeppelin as its lead vocalist, and Frank Zappa, whose work reflected a wide range of expertise in various musical genres and instruments, were unique in their ability to create dynamic content while portraying themselves as crazy rock stars whose music had a point. In fact, Frank Zappa produced nearly 100 albums and was famous for the humor and satire involved in most of his tracks.

After establishing a solid fan base with the Amboy Dukes in the late 60s, Ted Nugent embarked on a solo career that resulted in sales of more than 35-million albums, while his personal life and politics have been a frequent source of controversy. Meanwhile, Peter Frampton emerged as a teen idol as a member of The Herd and Humble Pie, but Frampton's greatest success came as a solo artist when he broke through in 1976 with one of the most successful live albums ever, "Frampton Comes Alive!."

Rounding out our list of top 20 classic rock solo artists are Tom Petty at number 19 and Lou Reed at number 20. Tom Petty was an immediate hit in Britain in 1976 and a 10-time GRAMMY nominee who caught on in the U.S. in 1977 and, both alone and with his band the Heartbreakers has had chart success with every one of his albums. Reed, on the other hand, is considered the Godfather of Punk and has also influenced Alternative Rock with 30 solo albums, following a successful stint with Velvet Underground.

From Page to Slash, here are the greatest solos in rock.
It isn’t easy to pare 50 years of rock and roll down to a top-10 list, but we’re feeling brave, so what the hell. Here are our picks for the 10 greatest rock solos ever committed to record.
Although the end of Layla may be more memorable to most folks, Allman’s Statesboro slide show verifies his title as the undisputed king of bottleneck guitar. Slick as oil but with the ability to stop on a dime, Allman not only redefined how slide guitar was played but also created a recycling market for empty Coricidin bottles.
While Axl whined, swayed and sashayed like Steve Wonder around his mic stand, wondering where to go next, Slash laid back with his Les Paul, patiently waiting his turn in the spotlight. Then, with his blistering ascent up the E harmonic minor scale - which kicks the second guitar solo of this tune into high gear - the mad top-hatter single-handedly breathed new life into wah-pedal sales.
Slowhand? Not on this track. Clapton pulls out every blues-rock cliché in his lick-tionary for this roadhouse romper. The true voodoo of this solo lies at the crossroads where major and minor pentatonic tonalities meet, mingle and blast off from E.C.’s fretboard. Ol’ Scratch surely smiled when he heard this one.
You almost wonder if Ozzy named this tune after hearing Rhoads’ white-knuckled rock and roll ride up and down the F# minor scale. What more could you want in a metal guitar solo? Tapping, rakes, bends, trills ascending legato runs... Rhoads set Eighties guitarists on the rails of neoclassical rock with this one. All aboard!
Whereas Jimmy Page discovered all that glitters isn’t gold on his well-intended but poorly executed “Heartbreaker” solo, his 24-karat licks in Stairway are nothing short of divine. His resolution to the natural F note in the opening minor-pentatonic lick of the solo couldn’t have been more perfect if the Almighty himself had chosen the note.
Sultan says, “Spend less time making your harem moan and more time making your guitar cry and sing!” For those of you who’ve learned the outro solo the lazy way -
playing eighth-note triplets for the daunting Dm, Bb and C arpeggios - get your fingers back to the wood shed. Those are 16th notes that the “Sultan of Strat” rips off.
Guitarist: Gary Rossington and Allen Collins
To paraphrase Adrian Belew in King Crimson’s Indiscipline, "I repeat my licks, I repeat my licks, I repeat my licks…” This could go on forever - kinda like the outro solo to Free Bird, in which guitarists Rossington and Collins double each other for most of this pull-off parade. It’s impressive not because of the degree of difficulty of the licks but because of the sheer volume they need to recall - 27, including variations!
The Holy Grail for all aspiring rock guitarists. Learn Eruption and you’ve earned some serious bragging rights. But if you really want props, you’ve got to tame the whole volcano, not just the tremolo picking and tapping sections.
Jimi offers plenty of reason to get excited in his Watchtower solo. Besides his masterful manipulation of the C# minor pentatonic scale, Hendrix’s wah-drenched octave climb and the double-stops in the latter half bear out his gift for melodic embellishment. It’s enough to make any cat growl.
With little bits of Jimi, Wes and Mayfield, and a whole lotta soul, SRV exhibits exceptional dynamic prowess throughout, making this reverent Hendrix cover his own. A seemingly lost art among modern-day guitarists, Vaughan’s R&B-style chord melody is like priceless art. It should be both admired and studied.

The mic works well. You just have to learn to press the second button after turning on the power. Don't forget to press that second button to turn off otherwise will lose power fast.

I have quite a few grandchildren and purchased 1 of these from Zulily and 3 from this vendor on Amazon all at the same price. The one from Zulily came in damaged packaging and doesn’t allow me to sync it to Bluetooth...it was defective. The ones purchased on Amazon are in perfect condition and prompt upon turning on that they are ready to sync to Bluetooth. The kids from 1 1/2 years old on up love these and I have been fortunate enough to be serenaded by all of them. The oldest ones are able to sync them so they can sing along with the original artist and have had sooo much fun with them. They are easy to use and good quality too. These were well worth the purchase for the hours of entertainment they have provided.

This microphone is money well spent whether your young or old. This microphone belts out a tune one can be proud of. Charging is quick and gives hours of fun. And we love the fact that if you don't use it for a specific amount of minutes it shuts down automatically to save your battery. These will make Terrific Gifts for family and friends for Christmas, Birthdays, or any gift occasion.

I had one already and I loved it and it works amazingly I use it on trips with friends and especially when friends come over and we like to play around with music. I love karaoke I have a machine but this is like a quick helper when you don't feel like setting up everything. It sounds awesome and its fun with family and friends. My brother loves his and he and his wife send us singing videos all the time... well worth the money.

The mic kept shutting off on its own. Had to continue to turn it back on. Kids got bored of it due to this.

I got this mic for my 5 year old daughter for her birthday. She loves it, but definately for kids. Does not get very loud but it does have a very clear sound. Definitely worth the money and I highly recommend this product!

Great cheap karaoke microphone! My kids love playing with it and singing into it! The speaker works well to play music off your phone! As for singing into the mic, not so great. But still worth $20!

The microphone appears to be used or refurbished. I watched the unpacking on YouTube everybody elseS microphone came out of a plastic package mine was just sitting right in the box with no plastic covering. I also did not get an instruction manual. and there appears to be two speakers but I can’t tell if they’re both supposed to emit music because only one side is letting music come out. I’ve only used it 3 times and now it’s not holding a charge or charging properly . I’m sending it back
