Rock, Pretty Baby is a 1956 AmerÂiÂcan comÂedy muÂsiÂcalâ film diÂrected by Richardâ Bartlett and starÂring Salâ Mineo , Johnâ Saxon and Luanaâ PatÂten . [3]
Young muÂsiÂcian Jimmy Daley needs to come up with $300 to purÂchase the elecÂtric guiÂtar he wants. He pawns his law books, to the disÂapÂpointÂment of his faÂther, a docÂtor whose goal is for Jimmy to beÂcome a lawyer.
Jimmy's jealÂous naÂture reÂsults in a ruckus at a party and $150 in damÂage to a neighÂbor, which Dr. Daley inÂsists his son pay. His girlÂfriend Joan Wright learns that a batÂtle of the bands has a cash prize. Jimmy and his group end up losÂing the conÂtest, but he earns the reÂspect of his dad.
The film was anÂnounced in June 1956, under the title Crazy Love . [4]
Luana PatÂten had been a child actor then stopped workÂing at age 14 to conÂcenÂtrate on school. After sevÂeral years she told her agent she wanted to act again and she was cast in Rock Pretty Baby . [5] She signed at $650 a week. The conÂtract had opÂtions for anÂother seven years. UniÂverÂsal tried to exÂerÂcise it and PatÂten sued to get out of it. [6]
FilmÂing started July 1956. It was also known as The LivÂing End beÂfore being tiÂtled Rock Pretty Baby . [7]
BeÂfore the film came out, Alâ Daff of UniÂverÂsal said the movie "is not an imÂporÂtant picÂture but it will gross more than many multi milÂlion dolÂlar pictures." [1]
Salâ Mineo and John Saxon were sent out on a proÂmoÂtional tour on the launch of the film. [8]
UniÂverÂsal signed George Winslow to a two picÂture a year deal over five years on the basis of his perÂforÂmance in the movie. [9]
VaÂriÂety said it "should emerge a box ofÂfice winner." [10]
Filmink called it "a jaunty, enÂerÂgetic teen film, with a surÂprisÂingly hot late-night beach kissÂing scene beÂtween Saxon and co-star Luana PatÂten. It beÂcame a sleeper hit for Universal." [11]
In May 1957 UniÂverÂsal anÂnounced they would make a seÂquel SumÂmerâ Love . [12]
