In 1994, Tommy Boy joined forces with ESPN for Vol. 1 of its Jock Rock series, which focused on rock, R&B, and funk favorites that had been used by teams at sporting events. One song segues into another, and the collection maintains a sportslike ambience with such devices as roaring crowds and organ riffs. For a song to work at a sporting event, it needs to be exuberant and have both a hook and an edge; on this CD, the gems that fit that criteria range from '60s soul ( Junior Walker 's "Shotgun," Sly & the Family Stone 's "Dance to the Music," James Brown 's "I Got You") and '60s rock ( Steppenwolf 's "Born to Be Wild," Tommy James & the Shondells ' "Mony Mony") to late-'70s punk ( the Ramones ' "Blitzkrieg Bop") and '70s and '80s corporate rock ( Queen 's "We Will Rock You," Bachman-Turner Overdrive 's "Takin' Care of Business"). The inclusion of Steam 's "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)" was almost obligatory, for this classic has often been used as a way of telling the opposing team that it can kiss the possibility of a victory goodbye. You won't hear any lush ballads on this CD, and you won't hear anything that's angular or hard to absorb -- at sporting events, you need songs that pull listeners right in with infectious hooks. Another thing this collection doesn't have is any hip-hop, although it should be noted that the Philadelphia Phillies used Tag Team 's "Whoomp! (There It Is)" as their anthem when they went to the World Series in 1993. While sports fans who appreciate rock and soul will definitely want this CD, one needn't be a sports fan to appreciate it. Even if you have little or no interest in sports, Jock Rock, Vol. 1 is rock and soul heaven.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MTV Rock N' Jock is a television series on MTV featuring actors, musicians, and other entertainers playing sports with professional athletes. The original episode was called The MTV Rock N' Jock Diamond Derby, and was changed to MTV's Rock N' Jock Softball Challenge, in year 2. The concept expanded to include basketball in 1991, football in 1997 [2] [3] and bowling in 1999 [4]
The game was an annual feature (with multiple reruns of most episodes) for many years on MTV. [5] [6]

The original announcers were professional sportscaster, Steve Albert [7] and comedian Ken Ober who provided color commentary. [8] Bill Bellamy [9] and MTV Sports host Dan Cortese initially participated as players and then as coaches in later years.

The fourth annual Rock N' Jock B-Ball Jam was nominated for the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show in 1995, losing to Jeopardy! .

Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes were a charismatic Philly band whose roots date back to long before a leap into stardom during the 1970’s. Behind lead singer Melvin, and the immensely popular Teddy Pendergrass, the group enjoyed tremendous success.
Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes were formed by Melvin in Philadelphia in 1954, and not surprisingly they would endure a long road before reaching national stardom. The originally featured Melvin, Donald Broody and Bernard Williams, signed with the small NY based Josie Records in 1954. In 1960 under the Valley Vue label, they went onto record their first hit to reach the R&B charts with the single My Hero.
In 1970, it was the addition of Pendergrass as their drummer that set off a series of pivotal events that led to the groups jump into national prominence. In 1972, the group collaborated with producers/songwriters Leon Huff and Kenny Gamble and signed with their Philadelphia International label.
Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes reeled off a series of hits that included If You Don’t Know me By Now, The Love I Lost, Where Are All My Friends, Bad Luck and Wake Up Everybody.
Unfortunately the man most responsible for their success Harold Melvin, died in 1997 but his spirit and legacy lives on, as the group which now consists of Donnell Gillespie, Rufus Thorn, Anthony Brooks, and John Morris. With the new singers and to pay homage to Mr. Melvin, the group name was changed to Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes. The Blue Notes continue to tour and dazzle crowds with the same array of groovy rhythms and soulful ballads singing the songs that you love to hear.
Sorry, Golf Tournament is sold out!
