Robert De Niro Announces Retirement from Acting, Plans to Focus on Philanthropy

Los Angeles, CA – October 25, 2023

In a surprising announcement that has sent shockwaves through Hollywood, legendary actor Robert De Niro has revealed that he will be retiring from acting after a career spanning over five decades. The two-time Academy Award winner, known for iconic roles in films such as The Godfather Part II, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas, made the announcement during a press conference at the Tribeca Film Center in New York City.

'It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m deeply grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to tell stories and work with some of the most talented people in the industry,' De Niro, 80, said. 'But now it’s time for me to step back and focus on other passions, particularly my philanthropic work.'

De Niro, who co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival in 2002 to help revitalize Lower Manhattan after the 9/11 attacks, has long been involved in charitable endeavors. He plans to dedicate his retirement to expanding his efforts in education, environmental conservation, and supporting underserved communities through his foundation.

The news has sparked an outpouring of tributes from fellow actors, directors, and fans. Martin Scorsese, who has collaborated with De Niro on numerous films, called him 'one of the greatest actors of all time' and 'a true artist who brought unparalleled depth and authenticity to every role.'

While De Niro will no longer appear on screen, he hinted that he may still be involved in filmmaking behind the scenes. 'I’ll always love cinema,' he said. 'Who knows? Maybe I’ll produce or direct something down the line.'

De Niro’s final film, The Last Ride, a crime drama directed by David O. Russell, is set to premiere in December. The movie, which also stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Zendaya, is already generating Oscar buzz.
