Can anyone actually tell me why Sims does all the TV broadcast while Rizzy instead has to split time on the radio broadcasts? I've always liked Rizzs and i don't think i'm alone when i say i think he's a better announcer. Also he's got major seniority. Was it just the broadcasting team that chose Sims for TV? and could we all band together and switch them? I'm tired of listening to the radio broadcasts with the TV muted...
Edit: I'm not saying I hate Dave Sims, I'm just stating that given the choice between the two I would definitely pick Rizzs for the TV broadcasts
Another edit: Ok is it Si m s or Si mm s?
Everyone complains about Simms. I like his enthusiasm honestly.
And hey, it could be worst. We could always have the White Sox announcers. :shudders:
I wouldn't mind the White Sox announcer if I were a fan of the team. I like a good homer announcer. Not to be confused with "home run" announcer.
If you've ever heard him announce Radio football, THAT is his enthusiastic voice.
i like his enthusiasm but he misuses it. he gets way too excited for mundane pop outs and shit, it's annoying. it's baseball, every play doesn't have to be exciting.
His enthusiasm sounds incredibly artificial to me.
People really need stop complaining about Sims. Honestly, there are so many terrible play by play guys around the league and Sims isn't one of them. You guys are expecting him to be Dave Niehaus reincarnated and that's not fair to Sims at all.
Seriously most baseball commentators are so bland and monotone, we've been so blessed in Seattle that were either expecting too much or just pissed that it's not Niehaus. Sims is very good, if you don't believe me go tune into another teams broadcast
But Rizzs was Dave's understudy for years with a huge seniority, you don't think he deserves TV?
I think Rizzs is perfect for the radio just because I think it's more the radio guy that gets you through a boring, slow, day/afternoon game with some stories. And Rick definitely has a lot of those.
I agree, Rizzs is better than Simms, which is why I say leave Rizzs on radio! I don't have TV and MLB audio pass is amazing. If I had to listen to Simms, I definitely wouldn't listen as often. Okay, I still would listen to every game I could, but you know... threats.
They are two very different styles of broadcast and personally I think they are both very good in their spots. Also its should be kept in mind how spoiled we in Seattle were with Dave Neihaus.
Simms is for sure a goof ball but he knows baseball (or at least it's history) and is very good at giving us a feel for how things are inside the locker room and personalizing the players which is more What TV is for as play-by-play is less important as it is on the screen. Rizz is a very good play-by-play radio personality and is as much a Mariner as anyone but he was trained as a radio commentator under one of the best ever and belongs there. one thing that sometimes does bother me about Rizz is how excited he can seem when the opposing team scores (granted he has spent his life watching the M's). I love Rizz tho.
I dont think announcers view TV as the greater medium.
Rick Rizzs has earned to be called the voice of the mariners. He'd probably never accept the title because of how much he loved and respected Dave N. I wish Rizzs would split games on Radio and tv with Dave Sims.
I respect Dave Sims because he is a good broadcaster and has a good chemistry with Mike Blowers whom I really like. It's just not the same as a guy who lives and breathes the team like Rick does.
Adam Goldsmith is pretty good in the small bit I've heard him.
Also put on an A's, Rangers or Angels game. You will be clawing your way back to ROOT NW.
I think you have to have the better announcer on the radio. Announcing for TV and radio has its differences when you are on the radio I feel like the announcers have to tell stories and put in deeper descriptions on what is happening on the field. I think they are both in the right spot.
Radio is probably where Rizzs would rather be. It also seems like the more prestigious gig, since the announcer has to explain what's going on without the aid of a video feed.
I love listening to the radio for baseball broadcasts. The pace and intricacy of the game just naturally lends itself to radio. I see many people saying that other team's TV announcers are terrible and usually that's because the put the people with more knowledge on the radio. (You have to know a lot more to describe what people can't see and convey to them what is happening) When it was Niehaus and Rizz I would just mute the TV and turn the radio on. Now, it's much harder to do this due to the 6-10 second delay on live events. (Thanks Janet.) I still prefer radio just so I can multi-task during the 3 hours of the game and still not miss much, plus you can just switch on the tv for replays. I like Rizz where he is.
As for Dave Sims, it's very apparent he doesn't care much about the Mariners or know much about the art of baseball. He just spouts tons of fake enthusiasm. Most "insight" he produces is just regurgitated, cookie-cutter, advice that he's gained from Blowers over the years. He consistently messes up the names of players on base and uses weird pronunciations on foreign names. "Pear-Rez" etc. Mike Blowers very rarely goes a game without correcting him or responding with an awkward silence because he has no idea how to tell Sims how wrong he is. The best solution would be to replace him with one of the multitudes of Blower's old teammates who hang around. Dan Wilson, Jay Buhner, Dave Henderson, etc. Hopefully now that the M's own root sports they will make the change. That being said, Sims is a terrific radio football announcer.
I figured out why we hate Dave Simms less. With Guti out of the lineup there's no one for him to man-crush on all game. So naturally we all feel more comfortable with his play calling.
Correction: With Guti, and Morse, and Ryan, and Montero out of the lineup, he only has Raul and Franklin to man-crush on all game. :)
