Fishnet Care Guide: Everything you need to know

Fishnet clothing has come back in style in a big way after a lull in the early 2010s. But what is yet to come with this is detailed information about caring for fishnet and unique clothing items such as fishnet tights, leggings, stockings, and more.
But don’t worry, readers of MagicOfClothes, because I am here to help.

Fishnet is not actually a fabric. It is a weave that is made from a fabric called hosiery which is usually used to make pantyhose. It is weaved in such a way that little diamond shapes run all across the garment.
Hosiery itself is made from a combination of nylon and lycra, which gives fishnet tights their signature stretchy look. Thus, if you have never worn fishnet before, you don’t need to worry about a lack of comfort with such pieces.
Using large machines, hosiery fabric (and sometimes mesh) is cut and sewn up into little diamonds which have come to define the look and vibe of a fishnet garment.
Fishnet tights can be washed and should be washed regularly. Because they are tights, they are so tightly pressed against your body that they absorb a lot of sweat and other oils that your skin secretes, which can make them smell in the long run. Thus, washing a pair of fishnet tights is absolutely essential.
Many people skip washing their fishnet garments because they think that fishnet is not a ‘real’ fabric. This is a very bad decision and not cleaning your fishnet leggings can lead to skin problems in the long run, among other things.
Fishnet tights can be machine washed. Select the handwash cycle on your washing machine, and use cold water instead of using hot water. As an additional safety measure, put your tights in a laundry bag so that they don’t get ripped up.
Although fishnet stockings can be generally machine washed, I recommend that you hand wash them. Hand washing fishnet garments is generally safer than machine washing them as the chances of ripping up the fabric are next to zero.
But if you do not have the time or inclination to wash them by hand, just remember to put your tights in a laundry bag before you throw them in the washer. Laundry bags cost like 10 bucks on Amazon, so it shouldn’t be that big of an investment for you.
Fishnet clothing items such as tights, leggings, and stockings should never be put in the dryer as they would ruin your garments in an irreversible way. On the same note, never hang dry your fishnet pieces either, because it will stretch out the fabric.
Tumble drying (or even worse, dry cleaning) will also not work on clothing items made from the fishnet fabric.
Instead, the better way to dry your fishnet tights would be to simply lay them down on a dry towel and let mother nature do its work. And they do not even take that long to dry; a few hours and you can wear your favorite fishnet stockings again.
On average, you can expect a fishnet legging or stocking to dry within 3 hours on a dry towel in a well-ventilated room.
Fishnet tights are known to be a bit flimsy. It is very easy to rip a few holes through them, especially when they are new and not that stretchy. If something like a hole appears in your fishnet leggings, here’s what you need to do.
What I learned is to fix fishnets you shouldn’t actually use a needle and thread. You should use a small safety pin instead with a long piece of fishnet thread carefully pulled from an old pair.
Once you have a piece of thread that’s long enough, tie one end to the safety pin.
Pull your leggings tightly, and spread the hole over the top of a spray can or similar large plastic cap. Now you should have an empty cavity to maneuver the safety pin as you wind the thread around the fishnets.
Start about two or three squares back from the hole for reinforcement. Now, start winding your thread around. Once you’ve come to the hole, stretch the thread across to the squares at the top end and wind the thread with two or three more squares to make it strong. Keep doing this as many times as you need to fill in the squares again.
The method is a tad bit difficult to explain, but I hope that you understood it.
Storing fishnet garments in the right way is very important because bad storage choices can lead to your fishnet becoming tangled, and untangling them is a struggle on its own. Besides, tangling increases the pressure that is being put on the garment, which can lead to rips and tears.
You can keep your fishnet tights neatly organized by gently rolling them and keeping them in a drawer. For additional safety, you can tie up the tights using lace so that they don’t interfere with each other. The safest and tidiest way to store tights is to individually place them in sandwich bags.
