С античных времён в местности вокруг реки Рио-Тинто в андалузской провинции Уэльва в Испании велась добыча меди, серебра, золота и других полезных ископаемых. Испанские власти вели работы по добыче неэффективно, и кроме того страна в целом претерпевала политические и финансовые кризисы [5] , что привело к продаже рудника в 1873 году по заниженной стоимости, как было оценено в последствии. [6] Покупку месторождения организовала компания Matheson and Company ( англ. ) британского промышленника Хью Мэтисона ( англ. ), которая сформировала для покупки синдикат из Deutsche Bank (56 % во владении), Matheson and Company (24 %) и строительной компании Clark, Punchard and Company (20 %). В январе 2006 Rio Tinto объявило о создании совместного предприятия в России с « Норильским Никелем » [ источник? ] , цель которого — геологические исследования на лицензионных участках месторождений «Норникеля» на территории России, преимущественно в Сибири и на Дальнем Востоке .

Rio Tinto plc is a mining and metals company. The Company's business is finding, mining and processing mineral resources. The Company's segments include Iron Ore, Aluminium, Copper & Diamonds, Energy & Minerals and Other Operations. The Company operates an iron ore business, supplying the global seaborne iron ore trade.
