Literally, I'm referring to the man's most precious posterior pucker, and not figuratively to his piss-poor personality trait.
For those of you who get an instant hard-on at the thought of me sucking on your starfish, I should note that I'm not into licking just any person's anus. It's got to be attached to a guy I like, who has recently showered and smells like there's a bar of Irish Spring soap up his ass.
The act of analingus, commonly referred to as 'rimming,' or 'tossing the salad,' involves contact between the mouth, lips or tongue of one person, and the anus or perineum (space between the ass and genitals) of another. It is practiced privately by all sexual orientations and genders, but some still consider it to be taboo, dirty or even homoerotic, so it's rarely discussed openly or admitted to in public.
Here are the facts: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 2011 National Health Statistics study showed that among adults aged 25-44, about 98 percent of women and 97 percent of men have had vaginal intercourse, 89 percent of women and 90 percent of men have had oral sex, and 36 percent of women and 44 percent of men have had anal sex. That means one out of every three gals and almost half of the guys polled say they enjoy playing with their partners' poopers.
Some of you reading this may wince at the thought of performing oral-anal sex, but I am here to tell the ladies that the lads secretly love (and deem you a keeper) when your tongue accidentally grazes their butthole while you're giving them head.
Stimulating your dude's sphincter will make his knob throb as the abundance of tiny nerve endings in the anus and surrounding tissues shoot pleasure sensations through his penis with your every lick and nibble.
Girls: If your backside has yet to experience a soft warm mouth lovingly tease and probe it, put that on your bucket list of to-do's before you die. If you are already a fan of the anal arts, then you have discovered how great it is to have your ass eaten as foreplay to getting it fucked.
For those interested in exploring analingus further, here is a practical guide to help you master the most intimate and unconditional bonding sex act shared between two people.
1. Clean out your ass. It is important to shower before getting your can canoodled. Stick a wet finger into your anus to eliminate fecal remnants from your pucker, or you can use an enema for a thorough rectal rinsing.
2. Shave that butt hole. Even if you think you don't have any hair back there, trust me there's the one stray that got away. Having a smooth posterior heightens your sphincter's sensitivity to touch.
3. Use a dental dam. It's important to have a protective layer between the anus and mouth so as not to spread infection, intestinal parasites, bacteria, viruses or diseases from one orifice to another. You can improvise by using an un-lubricated condom, latex glove or even plastic wrap cut into large squares.
4. Do not double dip. Don't ever put anything that's been in a behind into (or too close to) a vagina without sterilizing it. You can transfer dangerous bacteria and micro-organisms that can cause infections such as vaginitis and cystitis.
5. Rinse your mouth. If you didn't use oral protection, make sure you swish with mouthwash or antiseptic afterwards to sanitize the area. Plus, no one wants ass-breath.
1. Use your breath. Blow warm air onto the anus and the skin surrounding it, or just hover above and breathe against it.
2. Use your tongue. Lay it flat to lick, flick, rub and push against the general backside region, or you can make it stiff and hard to penetrate, probe, tap and trace the anal rim.
3. Use your lips. Kiss and suck the asshole, taint, inner thighs, crack of the ass, buttocks, lower back and the back of the legs.
4. Use your fingers and hands. Probe the rectum and pull apart the butt cheeks. You also can reach around from behind and fondle the front genitals.
5. Use your teeth. As long as you are only doing little nibbles or gentle love bites — not hard chomps.
6. Use your toys. Butt plugs, dildos and dicks can be inserted in the rectum to help stimulate the male prostate and intensify female pelvic orgasms.
3. Lay face down with pillows under your hips, elevating them off the bed.
4. Get on all fours, arch your back, spread your knees and ass cheeks apart.
5. Lie on your back with a pillow under your ass, lifting it up in the air.
6. Lie on your back, pulling your ankles to your ears, and expose your hole.
7. Stand facing the wall, or bend from your waist, with your legs spread wide.
8. Suspending yourself upside down, open your legs in a V formation.

It's time to put that tongue to good use.
The first time you learned about anilingus—also known as rimming, tossing salad, ass eating, peach munching, eating the booty like groceries—you probably thought to yourself, “Wait, people seriously do this? What the flying fuck?!” Yes, all kinds of couples enjoy eating some delicious booty. That's because it can feel incredible to stimulate the nerve endings around the anus, not to mention there's something sexy and "taboo" about the act that turns some people on.
All of which is to say, it makes sense that you're curious about how to eat ass. Lucky for you, I’ve eaten well over 500 booties, and I’ve definitely had mine eaten two to three dozen times. I love eating ass, which is why I do it in nearly every sexual encounter I have. I could live off of eating ass for breakfast, lunch, and dinner until I died. Luna Matatas , a sex and pleasure educator, and Alicia Sinclair, founder and CEO of b-Vibe, a line of innovative vibrating anal toys, are also experts in the field. We're here to teach you tips and techniques for eating ass correctly, including all the best moves, and how to make sure your partner is properly prepared.
Here's everything to know about how to eat ass like a pro.
Needless to say, you want to make sure that you or your partner has a clean butthole before you chow down. The good news is that you don’t have to do a full douche or enema before tossing salad. That’s because when you eat a booty, you’re focusing on the external part of the anus. If you happen to have a long and slippery tongue, you may be able to get a half-inch in there, but nothing more. You only need to douche if you’re planning on taking a lengthier penis or dildo that gets deeper inside you.
Really, all you need to do is wash the external anal area with some gentle, antibacterial soap and water. That’s it. “If you're just getting right down to things, you can do a visual and sniff test and communicate,” Matatas says. “Ask your person if they want to get their butthole ready for your mouth, or if they need to 'freshen up.’”
Cleanliness isn’t just important for enjoyment, it’s also necessary to help prevent the transfer of harmful bacteria. “Rimming can run the risk of transferring harmful gut bacteria, like E. coli or salmonella, from the person being rimmed (receiver) to the person doing the rimming (giver),” Matatas says. That’s why you should skip rimming if you or your partner has an upset stomach. Having diarrhea or stomach pain is a telltale sign that you had some contaminated food with harmful bacteria.
It's important to warm up, too. “A lot of people have this perception that they don’t need to do any foreplay with rimming, but just like with every other type of sexual experience, you want to warm up,” Sinclair says in Men's Health Best. Sex. Ever .
“Start by teasing the anus,” she says. “Make circles with your tongue, lick it like ice cream, and play with the entire booty. Really get your hands on it. Spank it. Shake it!” Once your partner is warmed up and ready for more, you can go deeper into the rim job.
You need to find ass-eating positions that are comfortable for both you and your partner. “You want the receiver to be able to relax into the sensations, while you’re comfortable giving continuous stimulation for an extended period,” Matatas explains.
The classic go-to position for rimming is doggy style . This is particularly popular among queer men, because after rimming, you’re in the perfect position to have anal sex . Sometimes, angling can be slightly difficult for the giver in that position, at which point the receiver can lay flat down on their stomach. From there, it’s easy for you to spread those cheeks and dive right in.
Another common position is when the receiver is on their back with their legs spread, or—if they're an expert contortionist—behind their head. “Use a pillow to prop up their pelvis, so you don’t tire out your neck from that strenuous angle,” says Matatas. You really want to tilt their butthole up, so you can feast like a king.
“Face-sitting is also fun to explore, but can be challenging for both the giver and the receiver,” Matatas says. “Prop up your head with a pillow to bring your face closer to their anus. The person being rimmed can use a bed or a wall to help balance their weight off their knees and thighs.
You can also do a reverse face-sit, where the receiver is sitting on your face but they’re facing away from you.
From the reverse face-sitting position, you can easily transition into anilingus 69 (so they’re performing oral on you while you’re eating their booty). All the person on top has to do is lean all the way forward so they can perform oral sex on the partner who's lying down. It's a win-win!
There’s more to rimming than spreading those cheeks and licking. I mean, you could do that, and honestly, you both might enjoy it, but you do have other options if you want to get creative.
Matatas and I came up with a list of tips and techniques for eating ass. Of course, this is in addition to asking your partner what they prefer. That should be your go-to, but we recognize that many folks new to rimming might now know what they like, and even if they do know, it can be difficult to articulate. So here are some tips:
“The crinkles of the anus have lots of nerve endings and fill up with blood as the body of the receiver gets more aroused and relaxed,” Matatas says. “Use your tongue to create circles around them.”
“Try using other parts of your face like your nose or chin,” she says. This is great in case your mouth and tongue start getting tired.
“Lick the butt crack and use a sex toy or your other hand to stimulate the perineum, lower back, and genitals,” Matatas says.
Try a position like face-sitting, which gives more power to the receiver; they can move their butt to control where their anus lands on your tongue and chin.
“Allow for consistency and rhythm of one technique before moving to the next,” Matatas says. “Ask the receiver if they want it faster or slower and harder or softer. Use that feedback and adjust to their pleasure.”
This creates a larger surface area for your tongue, so your partner gets more wetness and pressure from every lick.

A rim job — also known as rimming or analingus — is the act of using one’s mouth and tongue to pleasure your partner’s anus. Rim jobs can involve licking, sucking and kissing, and any other oral-to-anal contact. Anal rimming can involve inserting the tongue into the anus, circling around it — hence why it’s called “rimming” — or exploring around the rest of the butt area. It can be a pleasurable act on its own or a way to prepare for other types of penetrative anal sex such as fingering , fisting or intercourse.
Although rimming has traditionally been thought of as a taboo sex act, it’s been brought to the mainstream with artists, celebrities and groups on social media being more open about the pleasures of rim jobs. Anal rimming has carried the connotation as an exclusively “gay” activity because involves the anus, but people of all sexual and gender identities can find pleasure in giving or receiving a rim job. This is because there are tons of nerve endings in the anus, not to mention the psychological pleasure that can be experienced with oral-anal play. In turn, many people find rimming a significant source of sexual arousal.
For those looking to add something new to their sex life, rim jobs can be satisfying both physically and mentally. For a unique sexual experience, some may want to combine the act with penetration using toys or some form of BDSM.
As with any other sexual act, rimming is not a one-size-fits-all activity. Some may be able to orgasm from rim jobs, but the way anyone orgasms varies from person to person. Some people can orgasm from anal stimulation alone, while others may need to have other genital pleasure zones to be stimulated to be able to reach climax.
For the most part, rimming is a relatively safe activity; however, no sexual act is 100% cleared from any kind of risk.
You can get bacterial infections like e.coli and salmonella from rimming. Giardia, a microscopic parasite, and other parasites can also be transmitted through feces through rimming. This is preventable by making sure the anus is clean beforehand. It should be noted that you should avoid rim jobs if your partner has been sick or is experiencing symptoms of a stomach bug. When people have viral stomach infections, most experience diarrhea or stomach pain, which can be transmitted to you through rimming.
Practicing safe sex is as important for rimming as in every other sexual act. Although there is usually low risk, some of the following STIs can be transmitted through rim jobs:
There are a couple of things you can do to decrease the likelihood of STI transmission during rimming. First, keep an eye out for cuts on the tongue, lips, gums, or rectum. These cuts can become entry points for infection and transmission, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Using dental dams is another option. Dental dams are thin, latex or polyurethane sheets used between the mouth and vagina or anus during oral sex. However, it should be noted that dental dams are not widely used, which is why those engaging in rim jobs should make it a point to have regular, comprehensive testing and treatment (if needed) completed to prevent the risk of spreading STIs.
Comprehensive testing includes swabbing rectally (for rimmee) and orally (for rimmer), as well as stool samples. Because stool sampling is not a routine test, it’s something you should ask your doctor to perform, but be sure to have your doctor test specifically for ova and parasites. Prophylactic regimens with Flagyl are recommended for people who experience repeated infections but love to rim.
In addition, because rimming has the potential to expose you to seeing warts, tags and other issues, it’s important to add into your routine both oral and anal HPV testing — which involves a Pap smear — as well as internal and external visual evaluations. The good news is the HPV vaccine, Gardasil, has now been approved for those up to 45 years of age; however, if you are outside this age range, consult with your doctor about receiving the vaccine, as we believe anyone who engages in anal play can benefit from it.
If you have a known history of cold sores — caused by herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) — you might benefit from a prescription of Valtrex prophylactically. At our practice, we often see HSV-1 down below for those who enjoy rimming/being rimmed.
Because rimming is not for everyone, before performing a rim job or any sexual act, all individuals involved need to be on the same page about what’s about to go down. Consent needs to be given by the person who will receive the rim job. Equally, if you want to receive one, you should be sure your partner is okay with doing it.
Once your partner gives you the green light or you’ve given your partner consent, you can simply incorporate it into your regular sexual repertoire.
Still, don’t be afraid to communicate with your partner(s) if any of the above-mentioned STI issues are present or of concern. In fact, you can simply swap out rimming for finger/toy play if a concern is present.
If you’re going to get a rim job, you can try stimulating your own anus beforehand to get used to the sensation. Plus, it’s important to know what you find pleasurable. You can do this using your fingers or a small sex toy. However, you should be sure to use plenty of lubrication.
Because anal rimming involves a body part that comes in contact with fecal matter, make sure to wash your anus thoroughly before getting involved in any sexual activity. You don’t necessarily need to douche or enema to prepare for rimming. Those are usually reserved for play that involves deeper penetration. However, if you do want to douche , Dr. Goldstein recommends a body-safe isotonic solution like the disposable rectal wash he helped develop.
Experts suggest the best cleanser is a gentle, non-scented soap and to avoid wet wipes since they can irritate the highly sensitive skin in that area. In addition, avoid any soaps that are too astringent since they can draw moisture front the anal region and make the skin more prone to contracting STIs.
Wash anything you use to penetrate (if you’re penetrating), like sex toys, fingers and other body parts. Afterward, you can rinse your mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash to kill off any potential bacteria, though you should avoid brushing for at least an hour to prevent microtears which can give way to STI transmission.
A 2017 study published in Sexually Transmitted Infections, a research journal, looked at whether gargling with Listerine could be an effective way to reduce the risk of oral gonorrhea. The study found that after gargling for one minute, the men in the study were half as likely to have living bacteria in their mouths, which was measured doing cotton swab tests before and after gargling. Though the results may need to be treated with caution, as they are preliminary, it serves an insight to the prevention of the spread of STIs
