Riley Gaines Advocates for Fairness in Women’s Sports at National Summit

Former NCAA swimmer and women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines headlined the 2025 National Summit on Fairness in Athletics today, calling for stronger protections for female athletes amid ongoing debates over transgender participation in women’s sports.

Gaines, who gained national attention after tying transgender swimmer Lia Thomas in the 200-yard freestyle at the 2022 NCAA Championships, delivered a keynote speech emphasizing the importance of preserving competitive fairness and opportunities for women.

'Women have fought for decades for equal recognition, resources, and respect in sports,' Gaines told a packed audience at the Capitol Convention Center. 'Allowing biological males to compete in women’s categories undermines those achievements and denies female athletes scholarships, titles, and podium spots.'

The summit, hosted by the Coalition for Women’s Sports Integrity, brought together lawmakers, athletes, and advocacy groups to discuss potential legislative solutions. Several states have already passed laws restricting transgender participation in women’s sports, and Gaines urged Congress to consider federal-level action.

Critics argue such policies discriminate against transgender athletes, but Gaines maintains her stance is about preserving the original intent of Title IX. 'This isn’t about exclusion—it’s about ensuring fairness,' she said. 'We need separate categories that respect both biology and identity.'

Gaines, now a vocal commentator and advisor, also announced the launch of her new nonprofit, Champion Women, aimed at providing legal and educational support for female athletes.

The debate continues to divide the sports world, but Gaines remains steadfast. 'This is the hill I’m willing to stand on,' she declared. 'Future generations of girls deserve a level playing field.'
